Nominations and Ranking Thread 2016 (with results)

I have been looking for this one posted by @Canon Claude that could fit under the catagory of either characters or world building. Yes, I am recommending another Bloodraven heavy topic because I think BR is very important to the past, present and future of the series... and this is not the same discussion at all with regards to Brynden being Bloodraven and such. This was a great character analysis and the discussion got down to some deep details about the Ol'Fung-Eye ;)

Ok, so apparently I can't make a choice.

two threads about the swords, I can't have enough of them.

One about parallelism with fairytales. Besides it contains many links of other threads. by @Fire Eater

One about Obsidian by @SisterWithoutBanners

Thanks so much.   We had a blast finding those swords.   I've been looking for both @Blind Beth the Cat Lady and @Seams most interesting spin off topics.   I raise a toast to you and THE SWORDS this New Year's Eve!

Not yet mentioned, I think, are two or three posts in the "Myrish Looking Glass" series by WilliamWesterosiWallace. If I had to choose one, I guess I would pick the post and discussion focused on the purple wedding:

Well written, amply documented and with some interesting twists for re-read fanatics like myself.

SURVEY LINK: https://nl.surveymonkey.com/r/FJ2MLLV

In the above link you can rank the nominated threads in the order of preference, from most favourite (1) to less. I chose to use a ranking method, because several categories appear to be tough ones to make a one choice only. The survey was designed so that the nominated threads are randomly listed per voter and thus the order in which I entered the nominated threads in each category to create the survey has no influence. Only in the category swords no ranking is required, nor is the order randomized, as there are only two nominations.

You can vote until 22/1/2017. I will close the polls on 23/1/2017. This should allow enough time to read up on the threads you haven't read yet.

I thank you for entering your nominations, for voting and a Happy New Year!!!

Would it be possible to make the survey so that you don't need to rank every topic listed only your personal favourites? This would help if you haven't got an opinion on some of them.

Thanks very much for setting this all up!

Thank you for organizing this, sweetsunray. I am going to try to re-read each OP - at least - before voting, but in some cases I know it was the good follow-up discussion that caused me to keep coming back to a favorite thread: I give the OP credit, though, if the author helped to bring out the best in the forum. What criteria are other people using to rank their choices? I think I am also partial to posts that refer to specific details and evidence from the books, and that are well-written and logical (a little on the formal side, I guess it's fair to say). But maybe I'll find myself swayed by other factors as I make my way through the ten categories!

I just took the survey and it was harder than I thought! There are so many great ideas and A-Ha! moments that are brought about in these threads. I have spent the last week or so reading through many of them and they are great.

I also think I lean towards theories and analysis that are evidences from the books first (especially books first), but with support from George's known and stated inspirations. I think the two together is what helps determine what is going on now, and then how it effects the future characters/plot of the story- especially those with logical, consistent transitions.

Anyway, I am adding this here just to keep it moving in the thread:

Until January 22.

I tend to agree, but I'd go further. I suggest posts which dont actually say much but rather succeed in provoking a good discussion should be in their own category. It's not fair to compare them to OPs which contain actual research and presentation. It's just not the same thing.

Thanks very much for setting this all up!

The issue is that originally I had set it up that way, but the result is that this totally skews the statistics. Say, some people ranked all first 6 subjects, and thus every topic got a certain weight, but then someone else only ranks 2 and the rest not. So, one subject has been ranked twice first, and once sixth. Another subject was ranked second and third, but not ranked at all by the 3rd voter. And because the third person didn't rank the subejcts all the way down to 6, the second subject somehow has a better calculated score, despite the first subject being ranked twice on first place, but was once ranked 6th. If someone does not even bother to rank a thread then that doesn't seem to me a 'compliment'.

The alternative is that you only can make a preference choice of one out of six.

Though the OP is mentioned, it's a nominated thread, not nominated OP. People who discussed the topic and provided insightful posts whereas the OP did not might still make it a great thread for the responses.

That's why I chose to make it a ranking: no matter what type of categories I'd make, there's always something that seems incomparable between several threads.
