thouku
Hey, I've been saving up to buy the U.K. first GOT books and have seen an amazing set that's been signed by both George Martin and the illustrator Jim Burns. Obviously they come at a premium price. Does anybody have any idea whether these are a good buy and what their value might be in years to come?http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232199111921 Cheers, Chris
becca69
I think they are overpriced. I'm not sure how much value Jim's signature adds to the books but it can't be $2-3K. You would be better off buying them separately and maybe contacting Jim Burns to see if he would sign them. Also, Clash looks like it has yellow (age?) spots on the pages and the books have crumpled spines. For that amount, I would want ultra fine copies. becca69
Plus it's hard to say if that's actually Jim's signature.
Glodowski125
I'll have to agree with becca on this.
becca69
I'm also wary of GRRM's signature on AGOT. If you look, you can see how hard the pen was pressed into the copyright page and corresponding page... the others are not like that and have a more natural (smooth) flow to the signature. A telltale sign of a forgery.
thouku
Thanks for that Becca. I've asked the seller for provenance and he's shared the original receipt of where he's bought it from. It's from a reputable auction house here in the U.K. and the pics do tie up to the pics on their official auction catalogue so I'm confident the signatures are genuine. Only thing that is now biting me is the price. Will try and make an offer and see if the seller accepts. Thanks so much for your help! nyles33
The Jim Burns signature looks genuine.
becca69
I'm just weary of the AGOT. There is so much pressure put into that signature and some hesitation/unnatural stops. The others look fine.
becca69
I would also ask to see the page edges on all sides and the boards (front & back). That's a big investment.
nyles33
I just looked at one of mine. It was from the initial AGOT book tour (second stop? Book receipt has the event date and time and location - Austin, TX ) It looks more similar to the AGOT in that listing, so I would think it's OK. You are right that it does look a bit different than the usual one. If I didn't have the receipt (and more writing in the way of a personalization) I would be worried mine wasn't a good signature. Patty113
That is Jim's signature for sure. It is not too hard to get...A drink or two at a convention is the best way to get them. I have the UK books 1-4 signed by both Jim and GRRM, and I would gladly sell them for half of that eBay auction!
becca69
Glad to hear there are similar sigs out there! And if you get Pat drunk enough, he'll sign your books for you
nyles33
I don't think Pat would have to be too drunk. I would be worried what he'd write in them.
ym2000
One of the sellers I worked with in the past relished his set - excellent shape with three books signed. I think the price has been lowered as well. In my mind its pretty good value: Ebay item #: 162358923864
