So, Bob Stoops just randomly decided to retire today...

Wow, just saw that.

Thought a: maybe WVU will finally be able to beat them this year!

Thought b: kinda odd timing isn't it?  Doesn't seem scandal related since he's staying at OU in some capacity.  Maybe just wanted to avoid the post-season carousel?  Riley gets the reigns for a year with a chance to prove himself, and in the meantime OU is the potential job opening that the hottest coaching names have in the back of their minds all season.

Pretty sure Riley IS the hottest coaching name. We all figured he'd take the top job opening next off-season, looks like instead he's just gonna get the OU job.

Also, the whole thing is weird. Stoops never seemed to be well-equipped to deal with nonsense associated with being a big time head coach. He hated the media, and the publicity, and don't think he was big on having to kiss the recruits asses like you do these days. Still, shocked he left this year since they have legitimate national championship hopes.

Don't know about that.  He's only 33 and zero head coaching experience.  That's really throwing someone into the deep end of the pool to make them head coach of OU @ 33.

He may be a smashing success but it isn't a foolproof bet.  Could end up as the Big XII's second CoachBro.

My two hopes are for b00mer s00ner to implode next year and for auburn to pilfer one of the CB recruits.  Not a fan of OK...nope, not at all.  He left riley a loaded cupboard, though; that's for sure.

Not saying he'll be a success or not, but he was damn sure going to get the best job available next year.

MY first thought as well. Some of those 2018 recruits may start looking elsewhere and if OU has a bad year, 2019 recruits will look someplace else as well.

Coaching turnover, especially at the HC level, usually wreaks havoc on recruiting.  These kids aren't prepared for the uncertainty that usually comes with the whole deal.  I've done little reading on this turn of events (I'll be leaving to research in just a moment), but do any of you know if Riley intends to preserve the staff?  If so, that is HUGE from a recruiting standpoint.  They have enough roster talent to compete for the next couple of years even if Riley is an eventual bust, but they need to keep pace refilling the cupboard.  Herman is foaming at the mouth at UT, I bet.

Stoops arranged this transition. No way the staff is changing.  As far as recruiting goes, Riley will be a better recruiter than Stoops. This move should help OU recruiting wise, assuming they can produce on the field. Riley is a better recruiter than Stoops ever was.

So, HC and OC then?  That is a heaping plate for a 33 yr old, IMO.  Not that he can't do it, mind you; it just seems like a lot.  Like I said, the athletes are there to be ridden to a Big 12 title (easily, I think) but you have to keep the cycle going.  Texas is on a big come up and OSU is just as loaded as OU.  Man, that is going to make for interesting times in Norman.

@Michael Seswatha Jordan Will Grier ruled eligible to play game 1 vs. VT.

Good news for WVU, though most people expected it I was personally a little skeptical that WVU would catch a break on that one.  Hope the kid lives up to the hype.

Thanks for that S John, hadn't heard it, but obviously great news. Oh, do you know the TE Tryvon Wesco? I work with a guy whom best friends with his grandfather. Wesco says he lives up to the hype...and more. Makes every throw, commands the huddle and is as good on the field as off. I'm excited, to say the least.

Me too.  I appreciate Howard's grit and how hard he played for us, 10 wins last year is nothing to sneeze at, but I think the thing that has kept us from really competing for a conference title the last couple of seasons has been that we didn't have an elite QB in a conference where you really need to be able to air it out and put up some points.  I think we might have that missing piece now, and with some great young RB's keeping the ground game strong I think we will look pretty good on O next year.  If Gibby can keep the D trending in the right direction we should be a tough out in the Big 12.

Offense is gonna be good. Might takes a few weeks to start hitting on all cylinders.

My faith in Ginny has no bounds. Ill be surprised if we keep him more than 2 more years. He'll be a hot commodity.

So Hugh Freeze blatantly cheated worse than any coach in the past decade, and ole miss was perfectly fine with that, and gets sunk for a one minute call to an escort. SEC! SEC! SEC!

Yeah, I was going to post about that last night; but was having problems with the mobile device.

The NCAA really is at a crossroads right now when it comes to defining their place in sports.  If they don't slam Louisville basketball, can they slam Ole Miss Football?  If they can't get UNC basketball... can they get anyone for academics?

What power do they really have over the big schools any more?

At least it seems that he was calling the escorts for himself, and not recruits?

Even Bobby Petrino didn't call escorts...
