A Storm of Swords - Rhaegar becoming a warrior

So in Daenerys I, ASOS we read the following:

"As you wish," said Whitebeard. "As a young boy the Prince of Dragonstone was bookish to a fault...Rhaegar took no interest in the play of other children...Until one day Prince Rhaegar found something in the scrolls that changed him. No one knows what it might have been, only that the boy appeared suddenly one morning in the yard as the knights were donning their steel. He walked up to Ser Willem Darry, the master-at-arms and said 'I will require a sword and armour. it seems I must be a warrior.'"

I have read up until the end of ADWD but I can't remember if this is ever revealed? Maybe one of you boffins can clarify what he read to make him change so suddenly and so profoundly?

Thank you

Rhaegar for a time thought  he was the Prince that was Promised for a time with Aemon.  That was why he would have to be a warrior.  He later concluded it would be his son Aegon.
