I just saw this on my Fb feed... as heartbreaking as the finality of his passing is, I've seen him a few times in the past couple of years at different Cons... the poor man was a shell of his former self... he seemed to be suffering... he was barely recognizable

I'll always remember him in his heyday as "The Brain"...  managing Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff, Ravishing Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig, Big John Studd, King Kong Bundy.... and of course, he was the manager responsible for Andre' the Giant's heel turn.... he and Gorilla Monsoon were the best announcing tandem this side of Pat Summeral and John Madden

The Brain remains beloved.

Yeah, I didn't know he was in such bad shape until I saw it on a tribute I was just watching. Cancer fucking sucks.

I grew up watching him in the late 80's and early 90's also and can say that I truly hated his character with a passion when I was little. He was so convincing and such a good showman that I really thought he was an evil little weasel. Glad I got to see him in his prime.

Just ouf of curiosity, as there anybody else in this thread who sometimes mistook Frank Vincent for Dennis Farina on screen?

You know, I almost made this comment. So the answer is yes.

Yeah... This thread was really meant for B-listers and has-beens... people who wouldnt get their own thread but who were worthy of a mention.... whoever says that he went to a "better place"... is wrong.

Eh, he kind of became a has-been over the last decade and a half or so, didn't he? The magazine basically tanked, he had to sell off the mansion (which I understand had become a bit of a rat trap) and I believe his net worth plummeted by at least 50% or so.

I guess... but you could say that about almost anyone who dies after their prime.. Sinatra, Elvis, Ali. DiMaggio, etc... but like Heff, they made a significant impact on the cultural zeitgeist... I mean, the guy changed America...

And the lives of adolescent males globally.

Let's not forget he did all of this by treating women like shit.

Hmmm, I wouldn't go that far. I suppose you could say he kind of legitimized pornography in a way that it hadn't been prior, which I think many would argue had as many positive effects on the industry as it did negative ones.

Oh yeah, I'm not discounting that. He was an icon, no doubt. He just seems like one of those icons that kind of became a parody of himself. Elvis is probably a good comparison. I mean, an 80 something year old guy carrying on with 3 20 somethings starts to become a little gross and somewhat laughable at some point, right?

Sure, you could easily say that.  And yet it's also true that he did this by treating women like shit.

It's been nauseating to read some of the obits about Hef.  Yes, he accomplished this or that and society is forever changed because of his influence and some of that change was very positive.  But again, most of that change was due to treating women like objects.  That shouldn't be ignored just because the other stuff was important.

Yeah, I would agree with that. I do think there's a fairly big distinction between objectification and treating like shit. They are both negatives, certainly, but one is much more extreme.
