Watch some TV/Movies and talk about it here.

I love f'ing love Ozark, however it does have a massive breaking bad lite feel.

Defenders is a bit of a struggle

Finally getting round to Fargo

Preacher season 2 is not as engaging

Legion is good, but not as good as everyone said it was

it is almost impossible to have Sky Go, Netflix and Amazon Prime and stay up to date with TV, unless an insomniac or unemployed.

I watched the pilot of HBO's upcoming series(Sep 10, I believe) The Deuce after seeing it was available of HBO Go/Now. I thought it was quite good. Set the pieces on the board for the season quite well. Basically deals with the pre-Giuliani clean up Times Square of 1971 when it was a cesspit of prostitution, drugs and other associated crimes. Unsure of the larger plot. Typical David Simon: large, memorable cast of characters (and many of the recurring actors from his other series) dropped into a memorable setting. The pilot surely captured time and place.

I think the larger plot is supposed to be about the rise of the porn industry.

That's was I was leaning towards.

Spoiler

The Franco roles and some previews reminded me of the history behind the film Deep Throat.

Have initiated a Justified re-watch from pilot all the way through.  Am just about half way through the first season.

Ay-up -- it's at least as good as I thought it was, if not better, and it was from the jump.  Actors, pacing, writing -- everything clicked perfectly together from the very opening scene of the pilot.  What a brilliant ensemble cast.   And you never quite know where it will go.  So very cool.  So not like 99% of tv, even the so-called best of prestige tv.

Also watched Kong: Skull Island, because seeing all the Kongs is part of my media remit.  This one was a full of preposterous action and plot holes as the current GOT, not to mention it blatantly and proudly ripped off Apocalypse Now, because it's set in the Vietnam era.  But for once Kong won, so that was cool.

On season two of Turn and its fucking good. Much improved on season one. Enjoy so many of the characters.

I have two episodes left in the series. It gets better and better. Love Simcoe!

ETA: I finished the final two episodes. Loved them. The finale was excellent, especially the resolution of all the characters.

Spoiler

I thought Abe's letter to his son, Thomas, was an excellent way to handle that information. Very touching.

Just watched a documentary called I'll Be Me about Glen Campbell and his battle with Alzheimer's.  It's very moving.  I almost couldn't finish it.  He was highly blessed to have to a wife who is so loving and patient.

I've watched the first two episodes of Norsemen on Netflix. Enjoyed both quite a bit. A humorous look at life in a Viking village. Dry, understated, clever humor. Episodes are only 30 minutes, of which there are only 6, so a quick series to watch.

My wife and I watched Broadchurch S3 over the past couple of months.  Pretty poor, despite returning to the original setting and most of the original characters.  In an effort to maintain lots of misdirection, every single male character (other than DI Hardy, of course) was complete scum.  And once again all millennial career women are amoral, incompetent, uppity bitches who need to be bullied into their rightful submissive place by older career women who resent that younger women have it so easy.  And it's ok for figures in institutional power (police, journalists, etc) to abuse their power because they have absolute moral authority.  No-one gets to question this.

Aside from being annoyingly political/preachy, it wallowed self-indulgently and never had any real flow or energy.  The show has definitely run out of steam.  It was a waste of time after S1.

We also started the first 2-3 eps of Justified, which seems ok but pretty cliche so far.  It hasn't really grabbed us.

So we started Sons Of Anarchy instead.  Basically it's Sopranos with motorcycles instead of Italian food, and small town white trash instead of New Jersey Italians.  It provides another anti-hero story but doesn't really distinguish itself in a crowded genre, and lacks anything like the electricity of Breaking Bad or the narrative force of The Wire.  I'll give it a few more episodes.

Not sure the first season of Justified is going to change the opinion you have so far. It gets going in Season 2 whereas the writers are still figuring the characters out in S1.

Also, you're going to have a bad time if you're comparing Sons of Anarchy to Breaking Bad or the Wire.

For movies- Baby Driver was awesome. I'm a bit biased cause I live in Atlanta (where the story takes place), but it was a well written story that assaults your ears and eyes in the best possible way.

For TV- Been watching I'm Dying Up Here and it's a funny/dark/thought provoking show about the burgeoning Stand Up Comedy scene in 1973 L.A.

Comparing it to The Sopranos is pretty strange as well. It's not even in the same stratosphere in terms of quality. I couldn't even make it through the first season of SoA.

I caught the Independence Day sequel this week on HBO. Stunningly bad, and I saw the original like 5 times in theaters.

Worst movie of 2016, easily.

I saw Logan Lucky yesterday and it was decent I guess. It had a few funny moments but overall it was disappointing. It did have one great moment for us nerds on this forum though.

Spoiler

As a diversion the cell mates staged a riot and their big demand was A Dance With Dragons for the library. They then got into an argument with the warden about when The Winds of Winter was going to come out.

Haven't seen it but I loved the first season of The Last Kingdom and enjoyed the first 3 seasons of Vikings. Same sort of topic and same time period to be sure, but different approaches. Is Norsemen another in this recent Viking craze or does it have its own perspective?

If you haven't seen the other shows then no point comparing. Just curious ;)

Norsemen is a comedy, so it is decidedly different from both Vikings and The Last Kingdom.
