This show barely ever shows penises and when it's done it's not done in sex scenes of for showing something sexy, but more for laughs like Hodor in the first season, or the guy in the theathre trope in Season 6. Women always getarrow-10x10.png naked in sex scenes while men are allowed to keep their trousers (see Jon and Ygritte, Robb and Talisa, Melisandre and Gendry, Melisandre and Stannis, Myranda and Ramsay, Ros's scenes, and many more that I can't remember right now.). They have double standards in these regards. It would have been better the way you described, but my expectations for GoT have become so low that I don't expect to ever see a male full frontal in a sex scene on GoT.

Well I mean the writers of the show are men so it's not surprising. Whether you're attracted to a pair of boobs or not, they are far more beautiful on camera than a penis.

The whole scene was unnecessary though. I guess greywolm will die soon, so they had to give some extra screen time.

I can't stand Daenerys anymore, her plot convenience, armour and special show treatment is going too far.

First she finally realises her super spy Varys actually existed prior to her "rule", so here the Mother of Dragons (TM) goes.

She starts correctly by asking Varys about his allegiances, but then goes full on threatening him with her usual "or you will burn!!" *badass look*. You know, all out threatening characters like Varys generally ends up with your enemies knowing everything about you.

But that's okish, that's her "empowering" persona, but what Varys does? Unlike any other character in the series, he virtually kneels to her, the perfect "badass" messianic ruler. She does not deserve this special treatment, Varys shouldn't be this kind of lapdog, he should be Varys. But I guess we need to make her more and more "badass".

Then Melisandre happens and suddenly King Jon Snow (that Hotpie knows he is king but apparently not Daenerystan) becomes another "badass" Mother of Dragons plot.

First, Tyrion, are you sure this Jon is the same bastard would-be crow you met? How many years have passed? Why the hell is he not in the Night's Watch? Ain't that weird?

Then, of course, Daenerys had to be "badass": "Call him and he will KNEEL before me!!!". Nice job in trying to alienate your only sureproof ally against Cersei. Anyway invading the north, even with dragons, will be a peace of cake in the Winter, right?

But ah! In the exact same moment Dragonstone is recovered the North will need the dragonglass. Daenerys' skill is beyond simple mortals.

Now she only needs to be "badass" and spank Jon into submission, offering his kingdom to her. I really hope Jon will put out a Dorne and offer a marriage instead, uniting the Kingdoms through their offspring (or their future offspring). He may be in need, but he is an independent kingdom, do your best job for the Old God's sake! Dorne was outnumbered and undragoned against the early Targaryens and was able to resist enough to propose a diplomatic solution. The North is in perfect place for such a solution because of the Winter. The North may not want to fall to the WW, but you must show Daenerys she doesn't want to be queen of the walking graveyard either.

Even if Jon lapdogs into Daenerys, does that really offer the North to her, without consulting the Northern Lords? Sansa can actually bandwagon the coup and crown herself queen and Jon will turn into a powerless sex slave.

Euron cloaking and recon skills makes only sense with magic. From the moment you can see the enemies' ships they can see yours too. Euron himself was good, the sand snakes are pointless as usual and Ellaria is maybe too scared? I would expect the lover of Oberyn to want to fall in full battle mode.

Also the show favourite representation of strong female leaders: nymphomaniac lesbian extroverts with mic-drop quotes.

If you're trying to really empower women you're doing it the way a 12 year old boy would imagine. But that sells I guess.

Theon's relapse makes a lot of sense, those things doesn't wash away like that.

Nymeria appearing just to remember show viewers that there's actually a dire wolf that will appear later in the series.

Arya seriously ignoring Hot Pie. Why?

Yeah I think we will hear more of the danger of Jorah's operation.

Cersei's ideas makes sense, but the Reach houses do not!

Randyl Tarly is the best military leader in Westeros right now, and after the destruction of House Tyrell he should actually be raging against the Throne. The Iron Throne is powerless with only the Westerlands behind it. Just ignore that blonde pyromaniac and take your position by force, if you do it right Olenna may actually choose you as the Lord of Highgarden as the Tyrells are gone. Lol at Jaime trying to convince a (realistically) much more intelligent person, while Randyl looks confused. Makes no sense.

Littlefinger probably channeled all his skills into "badass" "empowered" Sansa. What did he want actually from that meeting with Jon? lol

Sansa again ditching her king in public like that. Good job Cersei, you just need now to give birth to his children. Just give her power and she shuts down, even if it's super obvious Sansa is next in the line to the northern throne, and the most realistic regent. Oh wait, we actually needed to reming everyone of that and that Jon is Jesus (like someone said above) and he needs to tell us again how me means to "empower" women.

Missandei and Grey Worm scene pointless. I understand they are trying to show sex is not everything but the execution is a distraction from the series and adds nothing from the characters.

Also it's obvious why shows are not keen on male full nudity in scenes like this. If you're showing an aroused male you have to show the working... "grey worm"... so well congratulations 90% of show viewers now think you crossed into porn with all the storm attached.

Sheesh where to begin... I've been thinking about what to say about this episode, but all I can think of as an encapsulating word is "bleh".

This is gonna be a long one... because it's an episode full of everything this show does typically wrong, but worse.

First off: the not being able to see anything. Maybe I have night vision or something, because until S6 I managed alright with most dark scenes, though I knew plenty of other viewers had issues with seeing things. Instead of it getting better, it has grown worse, and this episode had two such night scenes. How the hell this show with that kind of budget is unable to put a night scene on screen without the viewer being able to see anything is beyond me. I'll take my favourite comparison series for this: Black Sails has had plenty of scenes in all their seasons in dark settings, night scenes, at sea, storms, hulls of ships at night, etc. in a world where the people only have candles. I never ever had any problem in seeing what was happening there. So I know it is practically possible to shoot night or dark interior scenes without making it impossible for the viewer to see anything. What is the first image we get for this episode: a stormy night on Dragonstone and we don't see a thing. What are the last 10 mins we get for this episode: a battle in the night, awkwardly cut, and we again don't see much. It's an old complaint, but the blurry storm on Dragonstone as the starter just seemed like them putting out there how horrible they are with making something watchable. Stop doing night shots or dark interior settings, because you suck at it. If you don't know "how" by S7, then you'll never learn.

Varys-Dany confrontation:

I found the Varys monologue the best scene of the whole episode, and that's all on Conleth Hill. And that I found this the best the episode had to give says nothing good about the scene, but how bad the rest of it is. Why did I think it the best scene? Because it was the sole thing in there that was an actual character moment.

But it was still a bad monologue for the reasons already mentioned: this confrontation ought to have taken place during the months of sea voyage. Worse, by putting it right before Ellaria and Olenna showing up at the strategy meeting this Varys-Dany confrontation only emphasized how terrible their decision had been to teleport Varys onto the fleet in S6 finale. Sure, I can understand that the writers hadn't come around to a confrontation in S6 finale and that the tone they were going for in the S6 finale fleet shot was not one where they wanted to insert Dany questioning her people and allies. But that's the writers' problem, not a characters' problem, because real people don't act thinking "Oh, now I must be looking full with anticipation of finally leaving Slaver's Bay behind and not confront my shifty ally." And the whole damn thing could have been avoided by leaving Varys in the Reach or Dorne and have him show up with them at Dragonstone for S7. Or by killing him off several seasons ago. This scene only ends up showing how they fucked up in the S6 finale, and how they write for effect on the fly, and don't think things through.

Emilia's "regal" face: the only difference I can see with S2 is how Emilia aims to act with her eyes, because in the close-ups I keep on thinking "my, she has beautiful glowing eyes". But as the writers are notoriously known for not filling their actors in about the motivations of their characters and have them switch from one personna into another, and actors are therefore emoting rather than acting, the eye-acting doesn't pay off. Especially when in one scene Dany switches from "you must always tell me if I do something that you disagree with," to "I'll feed you to my dragons if you choose another to be loyal to in the future".

Mel showing up and prophecy

The prophecy and its translation. As others mentioned, the first thing that crossed my mind was "Why is Missandei teaching Dany a lesson on High Valyrian?" It was a whole plot point that Dany knows and speaks High Valyrian very well (being the language she was brought up in), even deceiving Missandei. Somebody else pointed out how they could have avoided this character inconsistency by having Tyrion make the translation mistake, and then have Dany or Missandei correct Tyrion. Last season they had no issue with showing Tyrion only having a rudimentary knowledge of Valyrian and not being fluent in it. But then again, this episode was written by Cogman IIRC, and we all know that Cogman is a fan-boy of Tyrion and would never ever consider the notion of Tyrion making even a translation mistake.

I would also add that it was partly due because they had Mel and Dany and Missandei avoid the "dragon in the room". The word used in the High Valyrian prophecy is not "prince" or "princess" but "dragon": the dragon that was promised. And a dragon can be male or female.

And then of course there's the whole "I'm an excellent judge of character" Oh right, that's why you expected to be rewarded by Tywin for making sure the sadistic psychopath Joffrey remained on the throne. That's why you believed you could make it work with Cersei. Obviously you totally judged Shae correctly. And what about those slavers last season? You were such an excellent judge of character then too, right?

More inconsistency: Dany didn't require Yara to bend the knee for her. But Kit Harrington should.

The faux-strategy

What annoyed the heck out of this for me was the logistics of Tyrion's plan: that is, Dorne, Reach Pyke and Casterly Rock. Those locations require the armies and those who appeared at the meeting to sail south passed Dorne, Oldtown, etc. Basically all of Dany's fleet should be sailing together at least as far as Dorne. This fact makes the Euron-sneaking-up-on-Yara-and-Ellaria alone even more improbable. The plan is presented as something that different factions would be doing separately at a fucking map as big as a table, but the whole logistics demand that they'd sail together at least half of the way. And you could actually see they tried to fudge and blur this fact by zooming into CR so the audience would forget the only way to sail to CR is by sailing the same way, and Dinklage waving vaguely at the route the Unsullied would need to take. That they have actors fudge and hand wave the logistics at the most visual evidence of what Westeros looks like to disguise the writers blatantly ignoring of what they know is a logistic plot mistake is what infuriates me.

And of course Tyrion's plan is stupid as can be. Renly had the advantage in numbers and tried the hunger them out tactic and well he certainly did not win KL. I know I hate Ellaria in the show, but I agreed with her when she said, "this is war. If you don't have the stomach for it, you shouldn't be here."

Against Cersei this makes no sense. Even if people distrust Dany for using her dragons, and Dothraki and Unsullied, they wouldn't fight for Cersei either (well if people and lords actually would be normal acting lords). Cersei's worse than the Mad King. People would take the Mad King over Cersei... or well they should.

This isn't about what the lords and common people would think: they're apparently a-ok with a woman who's been exposed as having slept around, completely having been stripped of her glamor, blowing up a sept during peace and a whole bunch of noble and a famous religious leader with large following and taking the throne. This is about how the viewing audience might come to think of Dany and Tyrion if they went for a proper war.

King's Landing

Follows from the previous. The whole idea that Tarly and his re-cast son (Tom Hopper who played a superb Billy Bones in Black Sails) would come down to this monstrosity of a queen with his heir is just too ridiculous to contemplate.

As for Larry using the "you swore an oath to the crown" BS: time after tim they had kings send ravens and hold decrees for people to bend the knee and swear fealty to them. Tarly did not swear fealty to Cersei, so Larry can't use the "you swore an oath to the crown" line.

Oh, wow, Q invented a ballista.

And what a retcon about Tyrion that was with Cersei saying that Robert used to go down the keep to look at those skulls, get drunk and bring his whores down there. That's Cogman for you. It's TYRION who does that. Not Robert who wanted those skulls out of the throne room because he can't stand Targs and dragons. Of course ST Tyrion would never do that, no. Putting in that line and retconning it to Robert doing that, only reminded me that they managed to avoid Tyrion fucking Shae under a dragon skull.

Winterplot-hell

Starts out with more of Tyrion's sainthood. He was kind to me. It's a Cogman episode, so it's a "praise Tyrion" episode.

That was hilarious when Sansa couldn't see Jon off asap and let all her arguments slide against him going. And agreed: kings don't need to treat with queens directly.

LF's brain must have been fried by all that teleporting or something.

The whole absurdity of the Vale army still being in the North and not rushing out to the Vale to defend it against possible dragons.

And those lords of the North must be getting annoyed of being called to a meeting to WH every fortnight whenever the KitN and Sansa want to have an open debate. The training of those armies at Bear Island and White Harbor and Deepwood Motte and Last Hearth must be interrupted every time their lords have to plod through snow with their retinue to go there.

MissyWorm

Nobody cares! It's been obvious since S4 that they planned to have a tits shot (and Nathalie has nice ones). But dragging it out just didn't help. While I have no issue with a sex scene or a romance, I felt this one just never worked for me, exactly because they tabled romantic plots for most of the main characters for several seasons. Out of sight was out of mind, or at least out of screen-mind for the main characters. Jon doesn't grieve Igritte. Sandor hasn't mentioned little bird since his reappearance. Sandor was "a man" last season. Gendry was still rowing. Hell even with siblings, even when they know their siblings are alive, they don't mention them whatsoever, unless it's unavoidable. Of course those romances were never off the table, but they've been so coy with any type of affection from these main characters for their siblings or the people they have actual romantic feelings for that people started to look romance in innane ships. And let's not mention the Sansa-rape-plot that made the show drop off a cliff since S5. To then have a proper romantic build up for minor characters as these is just off.

On top of that Missyworm never had the required screen chemistry to me, period. I'd have preferred it if they had made them siblings (Missandei has two brothers with the Unsullied, one who dies at the hand of the Harpy's Sons). Nothing more was necessary to make them angsty about being separated.

I did :lmao: at that zipper dress. I can't wait to read our beloved costume designer go into detail about that in an interview (NOT!)

Victarion's Battle

When people say that Euron now has become more something resembling to his book-character I'm kindof stumped. I didn't see Euron in that battle, but Victarion. Show Euron is book Victarion who managed to win the kingsmoot, but with a penchant for kinslaying.

The battle was alright, but no more. Almost any battle in Black Sails was way better than this (of any of their seasons). Making it a night battle is just worse. So, first somehow Yara's fleet is not with the fleet of the Unsullied going to CR at the same time. Secondly, they chose a night scene likely because D&D want battle and fight scenes shot at night (see that was the original plan for Jaime going into the museum that was supposed to be the Dornish palace), and likely tried to use it as an in-story excuse on how Victarion managed to sneak up on Yara's fleet. Well that logic works on the target being a shoreline, an island, a location that is fixed and on a map and not sailing itself.

To have this occur on open sea with the target being a sailing fleet is just utter nonsense. Victarion couldn't have found them unless he had a glass candle, a radar, or was following them when it was still daylight. And even then that many ships of Yara would have seen that fleet coming from miles and miles away. They might not be able to avoid a battle, but they wouldn't be taken by surprise at the last moment.

Now I'm glad that two of the Sand Snakes are gone, but the music and the "mama mama" scene and the acting of the two Sand Snakes that died was still trying to establish and convey a sisterly bond between them. So, all this did, was remind me how much the writers failed to do that in the past and how wrongly they used these characters sinec the very beginning. And you know what? I'm not looking forward to the torture scenes of Ellaria and Bad Pussy. Killing them in a gruesome death doesn't make them better characters. Kudoz though to the actrices for their own fighting stunts. They were given very poor material.

And my head hurts at the prospect of seeing Euron in KL, knowing he must have sailed past Dragonstone. Should have used that fleet for a blackade on Blackwater Bay, Dany. Tyrion what the hell were you thinking! I thought you were an intelligent man. Guess not.

I'm not going to use any words on the "foreign invasion" scene.

Don't care about Theon jumping overboard. Don't care about Yara weeping or Victarion laughing like a maniac. The whole battle was meaningless for me, because I didn't care about anyone on those ships. Don't care for deadpan Danny with her beautiful glowing eyes either.

The cure for Greyscale

That's what they came up with? Removing the skin (grafting) and put ointment on it? Did anyone forget what happened to Drogo when only a tiny bit of skin of his chest was sliced off? But you're gonna tell me that taking the infected skin from a man's back and chest all the way down, and his arms, and likely his legs is gonna make him brand new? The whole body has just been turned into an open wound! There's just no way you can avoid any rapid infection from causing Jorah to die within the week, faster than greyscale does, and just as painful. Do they know that we breathe partly through our skin? That if enough skin is damaged (as with burns) there's no saving someone, even in sterile rooms with the best medical modern care out there?

They should have gone for a magical cure, because a physical mechanical one just isn't realistic.

And the "don't scream" is just as unrealistic. No matter how much Jorah could bite on that strap of leather, he should be wailing as far as Dragonstone.

:lmao: at Jorah's "Kaleesi" on top of his suicide note. I'm contemplating startng a reaction channel of me bursting out in laughter or waving my hands at the nonsense in this show.

Maisie, Hot Pie and Nymeria

Kudoz again to Maisie for doing the utmost with what she's given. Yes, both scenes were very underwhelming. And it's because of their utter negligence of continuing small references to Winterfell and her wolf since I guess S2, by cutting the warg bond that Arya has with Nymeria (even across an ocean), and cutting away Catelyn being dragged out of the water by the wolves, or have Arya be righteously angry with Beric and Thoros over the sale of Gendry that she coudln't reminisce about Hot Pie or the BwB once in a while. If you're going to have characters reconnect, then it is only satisfying if you remind people once in a while that they're on the characters's mind.

I don't mind Nymeria remaining in the Riverlands. But the hostile approach did tick me off. And in the end this scene made me once again very angry over their treatment of wolves. And NO Cogman, it doesn't make it better if you say "you filmed a scene with Ghost but cut it fro the episode". And by now the "CGI fur is expensive" is BS. If they have the budget to film a battle with 70 live horses in a battle (filmed chronologically), for how much time they took to film the shit-montage of last week, they have the fucking budget for FUR.

If she was never no-one, why did a man who is no-one tell her that now she is no-one?

Either that Jaqen has no idea what faceless men are or it was a desperate attempt to save his own life. Arya killed the Waif, maybe he thought that Arya wants to kill him too. The FM aren't really fearless of their own death, as shown in Season 2 and book 2.

So you cut the season down from 10 episodes to 7 and we get what...10 minutes of Grey Worm and Missandei nubbing each other?  Don't get me wrong Missandei is gorgeous, but damn.... too much time put on them.

Do you remember those 5 or so scenes between Tyrion, GW and Miss during last seasons? Like telling jokes and talking about hobbies? That's what happens when D&D run out of book material but have to keep Tyrion on screen from time to time. I don't even want to know how much time was wasted on those scenes last season...

I really didn't get the point of Littlefinger going to the cripts and just piss off Jon for no reason? what exactly that accomplished?

I suppose that no one has strangled him for some time and he missed it. :dunno:

I was thinking about it for quite a long time and I came to the conclusion that it was a super idiotic way to ask Jon for Sansa's hand as a sign of gratitute for saving Jon's ass. LF first mentions that Jon hasn't thanked him for bringing the Vale army. Btw, Jon needs to be real and admit that he would have been dead and possibly not resurrected this time if LF hadn't saved him. And just after reminding Jon of what he owes to LF, LF says that he has affection for Sansa. In other words, LF points his (little) finger to what he wants for his help. Imo, D&D thought that this would be the best way LF could manipulate Jon into giving him Sansa's hand.

Why the fuck is it so dark everywhere? Every scene happens either at night or in poorly lit rooms. Maybe they took the Long Night too literally.

Why is everyone dressed in black?

I'm so glad someone's bothered by this as well!! Maybe other people has much better eyes than I do, but most of the time I watch GOT like this:

OK, a new scene. Where is it? Outside? Sea? Is that supposed to be a building or is my screen just so dirty?? OK, a fireplace. We're inside. Is someone there? Someone? Something? Good, a person. Probably Jon. A close-up on the face... Nope, it's Sam. Is there someone else in the room? What is Sam holding? Is he even holding something?

And it goes on like this and I'm not even exaggerating. The best moments are battles like the battle of Castle Black or the recent Euron vs Yara battle. Everybody looks exactly the same. People kill each other and it's not even possible to tell which side is winnnig. The only way I can identify important characters is that they are not killed in the same second they appear on screen. Whenever is someone able to block at least one swing of an enemy's sword, that's an important character.

And by the way, I wonder if there is a shortcut on the way from Dragonstone to Winterfell. Dany arrives and sends a raven to Jon who receives it some time later. Fine. However, in the previous episode Sam sends a raven to Jon and Jon receives this raven days after the Dany's one, although around the same time Sam sends the raven to Jon, he says to Jorah that Dany has yet to arrive. And, an even more interesting thing, a raven about Bran from The Wall has yet to arrive to Winterfell (I'm naive and expect Edd to send a word to Jon about his long lost brother). I suppose that the raven from the Wall took a shortcut throught Pentos, Meereen and Asshai...

Just watched the last scene from season 6 and noticed that Daenerys is surrounded not only by Greyjoy ships but also by Martell and Tyrell ones. So they HAD their armies, they could just attack King's Landing... except all those ships disappeared? It's unbelievable how people working in this show just don't plan ahead.

I know a lot of people complain about Dan's acting, but it makes a lot more sense when you realize that Emelia Clarke went to The Derek Zoolander School for People who Look Good and want to Act Good Too.

I really do agree with the comments about Euron being a nutty version of Victarion.  This character is all surface and no depth, and doesn't even live up to the surface of Euron.

may be considered nitpicking, but do you all remember when Stannis attempted to acquire a loan from the Iron Bank, but he was quickly put in his place when asked about the amount of resources at his disposal on Dragonstone?

Dany shows up at an empty Dragonstone, meaning no smallfolk working the fields, or tending to livestock, or fishing.  Meanwhile, Cersei and Jaime discuss their need for resources to feed the city and their army now that the Tyrells have jumped ship.  Cut to Tyrion discussing a protracted siege of King's Landing to starve them out (also a lot of suffering for the smallfolk who don't deserve to be burned, but clearly deserve to be starved).

what about feeding Dany's Unsullied army?  or the Dothraki (who have yet to make an appearance)? or even the Dragons?  they will have no choice but to pillage their way across the continent, regardless of destination.  or, more than likely, this will never be addressed and everything will work out perfectly for Dany because reasons.

And now that I think of it, how could Dany even send a raven to Winterfell? Dragonstone was abandoned so who was feeding them? I guess Olenna or Ellaria could have brought ravens with themselves but it's still weird.

There's absolutely no sense of the scale of Westeros or time passing in the show. I'm pretty sure that next episode we will see Jon already arriving at Dragonstone, while for Jorah and Sam only a few hours will have passed.

Ok this has bothered me as I binge watched seasons 1-6 and now 7 (sorry book reader).

Does no one in the kingdom wear underclothes?  Apparently in all the East and the West, it is fashionable to go commando 100% of the time.  One would think at least in the north some long undies might be proper as ITS COLD.

(small point I know, but I got totally triggered by the Missandei/Grey Worm scene)

And it's worst when she's in a scene with someone who's a good actor. Like when she confronted Varys. Conneth Hill did what he could with this scene and showed so much emotions and she just had the same face during the whole scene.

The problem (or one of them) is that the story has gotten to a place where the less experienced actors (Stark kids, Dany) have more screen time than the experienced actors.  This is has been true for a couple of seasons, with the exception of Margaery/Natalie, Tyrion/Peter, and Cersei/Lena.  Natalie is gone, Conleth and NCW (especially NCW) have been woefully underused for a while, and Jorah/Iain is barely in the show now.  As characters continue to converge on one or two locations, this problem will only get worse.

(small point I know, but I got totally triggered by the Missandei/Grey Worm scene)

Women do not in GOT. (They are taught how to gently undress instantly for a man in case there is a sex scene. They always do the same gestures...). She will always be naked , always. He never will.

Rants about this episode:

-It's extremely Saint Tyrionish. Saint Tyrion this, Saint Tyrion that, "Saint Tyrion was kind with me", "he is a good man", "I'm the Queen!!!respect Saint Tyrion," ... "Saint Tyrion is the best military commander"......

-Dany and Varys. Fine, but  Why is it happening NOW???????

-Citadel was ok for me, but as @sweetsunray pointed out, felt incredibly unrealistic in terms of actually surviving.

-Ellaria and Yara were right but saint Tyrion ruined it.

-Jaime. well, Larry, dothrakis and Cersei.

-Cersei's speech is like an insult to intelligence. HA HA HA. "She is a monster, I'm a protector". "Do you want her?!"
