[Spoilers] Rant and Rave Without Repercussion

Recommended Posts

I think the biggest issue with the series as a whole is D&Ds one season at a time approach. If they couldn't plan the plot arch's across the whole series they should plot a couple of seasons together. In the first 4 seasons this wasnt as big an issue, they had this mapped by the books already so the issues we had were inconsistancies like Tyrion mentioning Doran's 3 children in season 2 & come season 5 there's only 1.

Now we're off the books it's been particularly jarring. For example when filming season 6 knowing the Tyrells & Dornish leave Cersei for the Targs they finished the season with that big Varys revenge bit. Then when they started planning season 7 they decided to merge Cersei with Aegon. But wait, Aegon is supposed to be allied with Tyrell, Dorne & Euron against Dany in the Dance of Dragons. So they thow the revenge plot in the bin & have Cersei take control of the Reach & Dorne quickly. The result is the complete waste of time we've had that could have been better used.

I wonder if Jorah is going to notice Jon has the Mormont family blade (when Jorah inevitably shows up at Dragonstone). Likely, Jon and Jorah will be around each other for a whole season, then Jorah will make an issue out of it next season at the worst possible time. Like Jon is getting ready to face the Night King or something, and Jorah goes, "Wait! That's my family sword you have! I want it back!" And Jon's like, "Hm, you couldn't have mentioned this issue last year?"

At least they gave Jorah a new shirt. For a series with so much money invested in it, I am shocked at the costume design. Everyone wears the same shirt/dress/armor in every episode. How did Jorah's shirt not rot off his back?

So bizarre that they decided to have characters talk openly about accents when there is hardly any consistency over accents and from where they derive. I don't really care much that accents are all over the place but drawing attention to it was silly.

Yes. I think that was for the purpose of making Davos unknowingly commit a faux-pas, not realizing he was talking about the beautiful weather where Miss Sandy was enslaved. Also, to remind the audience that Davos used to live on Dragonstone, for whatever reason.

Also, I LOVE the logic of show characters like Dany who scoff at Jon talking about legends such as the Night King being real. "You expect me to believe in the undead??" Dany and her advisers sit around looking at each other as if wondering who let this madman into their midst. All the while, Dany and her advisers continually remind Jon about her dragons--which seem just about as silly as any army of the undead.

"You believe in monsters? By the way did you see my dragons? How could you ask me to take you seriously about an army of the undead when I, a human, hatched three dragon eggs all on my own? I deal in facts, not silly fairy tales."

My post was a rhetorical question, but.......my issue with the unmentioned Heartsbane is that, in this world, even before any knowledge of needing Valyrian steel to fight WW and wights, these swords were important heirlooms.  People don't just shrug off their basically disowned son running away with them.  They don't hand wave it away as not important yet.  A man like Randyll Tarly would have been up the next morning after the theft, on Sam's ass, reclaiming it.  IF he didn't manage that, I still can't see why.........neither character has mentioned it again.  Of course I know the show will address it again, once it's time to use the damn sword.  Then again, I never count on this show to do anything right, so.......I take that back, LOL  Who knows if Heartsbane will do anything but molder in The Citadel with Sam and the mite filled scrolls.

My initial point was how important these swords are in themselves, not about their newly found purpose.  Look how the Starks tried to get back Ice during the Wot5K, in negotiations.  Valyrian steel is so coveted that the Ds decided to show Tywin doing the desecration of melting down Ice......because it was so meaningful.  Heartsbane is all of that to a Tarly, maybe even more......being a slightly less important House, but sporting a Valyrian steel sword.  Another point was......this is a thread for complaints, and YES, it's my damn complaint, compounded now over a few episodes.

Your complaint is valid as far as I'm concerned. This has been bothering me as well. Especially now that he has marched off to war without his ancestral sword. I see it being like Davos/Melisandre and Dany/Varys confrontation scenes where it should have occurred many episodes beforehand, but the show runners just forgot about it, pushed it off, or don't think much of their audience to think they cared about having a coherent story that flows. Unfortunately, the third option is most likely.

Sorry but maybe you don't understand how money works, because Lena's contract is probably not just about her salary but also about her appearances. No actor would sign a contract that gives him millions per episode and then depend on the mercy of producers to use him in as few episodes as they want. That would be pointless, wouldn't it? No, when actors like Lena sign contracts like that one they always secure the number of episodes they appear in, so @Iron Mother is right, Lena's and other actors' contracts definitely influenced the plot.

damn, i'm glad someone gets what that means =)

As usual, I am behind and have not caught up on the thread yet either, but I need to post these somewhere for the sake of my remaining sanity. If there was even half an ounce of logic left it has finally evaporated.

Nice scenery, I’m pretty sure Dragonstone didn’t look like that before.

Jon & Tyrion’s first conversation on the beach – don’t have much to say. Re-watching season 1 doesn’t mean your continuity makes sense though.

I don’t know why they like calling them Amy of the Dead now, it’s like they were thinking of the Return of the King (film not book).

I don’t want to comment on Jon & Davos teleporting to Dragonstone, but I’m pretty sure they did.

Tyrion continues to sound obnoxious.

Conveniently timed dragon-flight over their heads was conveniently timed.

The whole thing makes me think how stupid it was for Jon to go himself and not send an emissary.

Dany’s title is missing Roynar again. Does this mean Dorne (Porne) has disappeared again?

Davos/Jon have a good point about not mattering who has Iron Throne when Walkers come, but if Dany wasn’t trying to help Cersei to win, she would just fly her dragons in and kill Cersei. The dragging out of Cersei is ridiculous.

Also Dany wouldn’t need Jon’s miniscule forces if it wasn’t for the ridiculous plot contrivances of Dany’s forces allow Cersei to win.

Also why does Jon think that Cersei, who was involved in Ned’s death, is not an enemy?

Both Jon & Dany are very irritating in this conversation.

Dany said to Jon did you see 3 dragons as you approached and he said yes, but he only actually saw 1 dragon as far as I can recall.

If the CG-Budget-Eating Dragons weren’t used so pointlessly, perhaps Jon could have brought Rover (Ghost) with him to show his Starkness. The Dire Wolves aren’t even talked about by other people anymore. I supposed if Ghost was there, Drogon would probably just eat him.

And why can’t Jon say he came back from the dead? Won’t that help him prove his ‘point’?

Are Mellisansbra’s words to Varys meant to be heavyhanded foreshadowing that they will die next year?

Do those mistakes include burning a small girl alive to melt 3 inches of snow?

Why did Varys’s hatred for magic suddenly disappear? Or was it not meant to suggest that?

I’m not going to comment on the Bran & Sansa “reunion”.

Theon scene was pointless except to remind us how shitty D&D “adapted” him.

Why were the crowd/smallfolk cheering and booing in accordance with Cersei’s wished? They don’t feel like real people at all? Maybe they are all goldfish.

And no Larry’s “justification” was not a satisfactory answer. The book smallfolk only cheer at someone they love and go riotous at someone they don’t. It just shows that none of it makes sense. Cersei should have no power at all, even if she is a better ruler than Dany and Jon.

That maid of Cersei has somehow gotten Cheryl’s hair and outfit. And doesn’t care about incest. Is Cheryl making clones of herself?

Why does Euron want to marry Cersei? Because plot?

How did Cheryl/Qyburn find out how Ellaria killed Myrcella. Even with spies, they aren’t the sort of details that would get out, unless the useless Pornish Guards blabbed before they disappeared into oblivion.

Prolonged torture scene shows what D&Ds fave scenes of the episode were.

Cartoonish villains get cartoonish villain deaths from another villain giving evil monologue.

Everyone forgets that they hate incest just as they all forgot they hate Cersei.

Poor Larry. If he was Jaime he wouldn’t be here.

Oh look it’s Mark Gatiss and it’s clear D&D haven’t remembered that Braavos is one of the Free Cities and the IB is against slavery do they.

And two weeks, I hope Larry’s got his mass teleportation device ready.

Oh look, Jorah is magically cured overnight, what a surprise. What a stupid idea more like.

And Maester Slughorn is beginning to sound more and more like he should be back in Hogwarts. At least he seems to be enjoying himself.

The Oldtown “plot” is stupid box-ticking.

Littlefinger’s stupid line about “fight every battle everywhere always in your mind” made me snort aloud. It’s just as well that I’d been prepared for it already.

I know its been discussed and criticised at length already what with the trailer and preview so all I’ll say is it one of, if not the, most ludicrous nonsensical lines in a highly rated show ever.

Oh look Sansa is now amazing at everything. I wonder when she switches to a stupid personality again.

And what on earth is Lord Royce doing exactly? Have he and his Vale Knights turned into Northmen all of a sudden?

Poor Isaac. Of course Bran can’t explain how he’s the Three Eyed Raven (why not Crow?) now, just as Littlefinger can’t explain why he sold Sansa to the Boltons, just as Fauxllaria can’t explain her actions. Just as Larry can’t explain why he’s doing anything. Just as why Arya wouldn’t be able to explain how she did what she did to the Freys or how she survived the fatal blow.

Why doesn’t Dany think Tyrion incompetent or her enemy after his stupid plots predictably failed? Even if that failure was mostly due to the teleportation and magical plot gifts and abilities if her enemies?

Casterly Rock looks pathetic.

Why do they have to say Tyrion and Tywin built Casterly Rock themselves? It is thousands of years old. Just because Tyrion’s Saintliness and Charles Dance’s Charles Dance-liness?

Why did Tyrion think it a good idea to take Casterly Rock anyway? And why don’t Larry (and D&D) understand how castles and fortresses work?

Oh look at Euron’s teleporting fleet and its magical fireballs again. Joy.

Oh and Larry has got his mass teleporter working, as there is his humongous Lannister army made up of troops that Cheryl spawned in the pits of Mordor.

Oh and Highgarden looks even worse than Casterly Rock. The lands around it don’t even look beautiful and fertile.

Oh look and D&D said that Tyrells are crap fighters and so they are. Why? And where on earth are the rest of them?

So if we were to honeypot that Tarly took over 90% of the Tyrell soldiers with him, and made them all dress as Lannisters for some reason? No, still doesn’t make the slightest bit of sense.

And what happened to Olenna’s desire to see Cersei/Cheryl fall? And how did she teleport from Dragonstone to Lowgarden so quickly, and so pointlessly. Not a great Cleopatra impersonation either.

What a terrible episode filled with some of the worst contrivances, writing, plotting possible. That critics continue to praise the Emperor’s new clothes to high heaven beggars’ belief.

Jon made me sick in this episode.  That bastard should have bent his sorry knees and begged for help.  Asking someone to believe you if you tell them the dead are coming without any proof is just unreasonable and totally stupid.  Jon deserved to get thrown off of Dragonstone's tallest towers down into the waves.

So in two episodes every single advantage Dany had over Cersei was taken from her through deus ex machina.

1) her fleet of Martell and Tyrell ships that ended season 6 vanished from existence.
2) despite having no army with them it was decided that Olenna and the Sand Snakes should travel unprotected and unguarded to Dragonstone god knows why. So they could talk over a table maybe? They couldn't do this in Meereen when they were all reunited?
3) once on Dragonstone it was decided that Olenna and the Sand Snakes should NOW travel to their seats. sea snakes went with the greyjoys, so they were ambushed and destroyed. Olenna was smarter and travelled by magic teleportation instead of ships and as such she reached Highgarden safely.
4) last season it was said that Yara stole the majority of the Iron Fleet, but apparently Euron built another fleet even bigger without any problem. in fact his new fleet is so powerful he can divide it in two and attack both Yara AND the Unsullied despite being a continent away from each other.
5) jaime successfully used his telepathy to learn of Tyrion's plan and made his own counter-plan moving his army of ten thousand men from Casterly Rock to Highgarden, because as we all know the Tyrells have no army whatsoever.

Just quoting this because I can't quote everyone, but there are so many good points in this thread.

I've talked about this a thousand times already so I'll sum up.

- Nobody in the Reach would flock to House Lannister, much less to betray House Tyrell and conquer Highguarden. Much less, their most loyal bannerman and honorable Randyll Tarly.

- Apparently there's no real relevance to the Lannisters having no money because they can always muster a super army and everyone will flock to them because killing a pope, destroying the Vatican and wiping out hundreds of lords adding to kinslaying and incestuous relationships don't beat the whole "we fear Cersei, so we join her"

- Not only was Euron's massive fleet built in a day from forestless islands, but they have super speed too. It would be one thing to divide the Ironborn fleet and have a part of it defending Casterly while Euron is with the other near KL. However, Euron's ship is clearly shown at Casterly Rock.

- Dragonstone and KL are next to each other. Why the fuck are they sending their armies and fleets to other parts of the continent and leaving each other vulnerable??

- Creepy Bran

- Super witty and vengeful Olenna now just wants to stop and die.

- Not only is Varys useless, but apparently the Lannisters and Euron can track all of Daenery's forces' moves through GPS

- Jon and Dany's meeting was dumb and childish.

- Why conquer CR at all??? Also, Casterly Rock was a weakass fortress that apparently's just a castle near a cliff. And now it has no relevance at all because???

- Apparently you can cure greyscale just by reading the instructions. And the Archmaester was just okay with Sam's explanation.

This show has gotten dumb in a while but this was easily its dumbest episode.

Basically, Cersei was given a plot armour made of Valyrian steel in order to remain the main baddie of the season, and that partly extends to Euron. Honestly, what was the deal with the victory parade and the adulation from KL plebs? Ironborn are mostly known for rape and pillage, Lannisters are mostly known for sibling incest, backstabbing their allies and defectating on smallfolk since the day they got their hands on power, and suddenly, everyone in KL claps for Euron and Cersei, like they're hot stuff.  None of it makes sense, it's purely there to drive tension and not make Danny victory more obvious, just like the whole "You don't want to be the queen of ashes" Tyrion schtik, which, so far, lost her all her allies, and reduced her to sitting on dragonstone and posturing about being born to rule the Seven Kingdoms. It feels like they're filling the gaps beteeen more interesting moments in the show with shoddy attempts to display court politics and pointless exchanges between characters. My only hope is that they don't introduce more plot holes this season.

Sometimes I envy those people I know that haven't read the books and watch every Sunday with ease - without constantly silently screaming WTF is going here?

I feel like I did a whole lotta silent mind screaming this episode. So much so that I came back home to westeros to read every one else's vents (haven't visited in months). What they did to Olenna, my spirit animal, is shameful. This woman outsmarted how many men for how many years and all the sudden just hides away and waits for Jaime to arrive? I get that they went out of their way to show Tarly switched sides but come on, Olenna was smarter than that. I will say, the actors are Devine despite the crap they are given to work with.

Dany can't wrap her head around the boogeyman in the north yet has magical dragons. Ok. Tyrion sends her armies off without thinking that maybe his sister might out smart him? If I were Dany I'd be beginning to wonder if my hand were actually on my side. So far team dragons is losing.

I could go on but I think overall it's looking more and more sloppy as there is less book material to work from. That is not to say that I don't enjoy watching, i do. It is still by far one of the better shows on tv. I just have to deal with all the dots that aren't connecting as they would in the books.

I could have written something better by myself and i am not a writer, never liked writing or read a lot in fact.

My ideas how they could have made things differently:
1. On weakening Daenerys. Just have some kind of disease spread among Dothraki, we know in medieval times diseases could destroy entire armies. Have a storm, they got too close to Valyria when sailing to Westeros, there was a huge storm. Since these are not Ironborn and there is a lot of Dothraki with horses, maybe their lack of experience led them to death in this huge storm? We can have cheap shots of thousands of men dead in the water, people throwing dead ones from disease in the water, some broken ships and someone telling Cersei that at Dragonstone the amount of ships that have arrived are 10x times less than was sailing from Mereen. This would also show us that journey wasn't completed in a short time, we actually see it.

2. On capturing Casterly Rock. Why? No point in that, it just makes Tyrion look stupid and he is supposed to be one of the smartest people.

3. On capturing Highgarden. Keep a dialogue between Jaime and Tarly, but emphasize that it was in secret. Have huge Lannister army march towards Highgarden and have Tarly arrive at Highgarden before Lannisters with some other lords saying: "The Lannisters are coming, we've come to help, let us in". Have Tarly discuss battle plans with Olenna, her being confident in victory and then have Tarly's men and crown's loyalists butcher everyone at Highgarden at night.

And i totally understand people complaining about characters like Randyll Tarly being different from the books, but the biggest problem to me is that show isn't even consistent in itself! oh good old days in the first few seasons when we could rant about Stannis being different from the books and not about "20 good men" or similar crap.

The good:

Tyrion: "You look better at brooding than I do"

Jon met Dany right away!! No cliffhanger.  Much wow.

Jamie sneaks off to Highgarden and captures it (putting aside the whole 'who gives a whip about Casterly Rock').  Traps Unsullied when Magic Jack Sparrow warps into destroy his fleet.  Well played.

"Permission to buzz the walkway"  "Negative Dragonrider the pattern is full" *WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH*  Jon's first intro to the dragons was nice.

Euron in his best Jack Sparrow "Do she like a finger in the bum?"  I lol'd pretty hard at that exchange.  Yes i ts childish and silly, but hey it was fun.  (bonus with the whole 'they just like heads on spikes"--pretty much how I feel about the 'mob' IRL  give them bread and circuses and you can pretty much do as you want--sorry took a bit of a dark path there).

Sansa being large and in charge (even if its over stupid stuff).  At least she wasn't being a backstabber in front of the northern lords.  sheesh that got old.

"I need to talk to Jon" -Bran

RIP Olenna.

Nice touch on the torture there with the Sand Snake.  My money was on a ser gregor rapefest (sorry).

I will die here--and so will you --The Red Priestest  I liked that little bit.  Varys seemed to have plot armor of late, but it seems there is a chip.  I also wonder in she will have a role in reforging lightbringer (if it exists in show).  Doesn't quite fit with the lore, but I am just rambling so works for me!

The Bad:

Some people like the Bran 1000 yard stare.  I did not.  More like the 1000 yard cue card reading.

The wedding Bran exposition.  AWKWARD

Plot from the Rock to infiltrate Casterly Rock.  At least no Nick Cage cameo.  But I did like how Jamie feignted and took his army elsewhere. Tyrion built the cisterns.  I thought he was put in charge of the cisterns (they never flowed better!) .  Just a little too convienient.

Hey look its the next day and Jorah's better. (If you like your maester you can keep him with Obamacare!).  Obvious.

Sam got off with writing scrolls.  WHo didn't call that.

Dany's titles are getting long.  When will she add Queen of the Geats, Swedes and Danes?

The whole "I'm the queen, bend the knee"  Yeah uh your diplomatic skills.  Might want to polish those up.  Maybe its because I beleive the white walkers are 'real' but Jon comes in, has a real issue, is really genuinely concerned about the issue and she's all 'I'm the rightful heir' pfft that seems Neville Chamberlain stupid.  Also reminded of Ashe from Army of Darkness--"Lady you ain't leading but jack and s*** and Jack just left town (or got sunk but Jack Sparrow).  Tyrion says "Dany cares about her people" Yeah she totally showed it in that throne room exchange.

Davos: "This is Jon Snow"  I know Davos is plain spoken, but his speech about how Jon is King by right could have been written much better without the awkward pauses.

The server is attacked by Wights every monday!  NEED MOAR DRAGONGLASS AT SERVERFARM! (I kid, I kid)

The Ugly

Character Development Bewbs! (watch the honest trailer for Season 5)  Unnecessary boob shot of Cersei.  Look the point of the sex in game of thrones was that the violence, sex, blood, all played a role in how events played out.  This was just cheap cleavage for the boner demographic.

Lannister sex.  Not that its ewww...its more than Jamie (I thought) had seen his sister for what she is.  Maybe that's book Jamie.  Show Jamie is, I dunno what show Jamie is.  Plus the whole scene played out  like cheap porno.  Not that I dislike cheap porno.  But obviously I recognize cheap porn.  And that was a cheap porn scene. (Without the payoff I might add...just sayin)

Casterly Rock thing.  Yeah I had it under bad.  I change my mind and am too lazy to move it.  Just dumb.

Euron the magic warping pirate.  He's (presumably) in the Narrow Sea.  He's at Kings Landing.  His off the coast of Casterly Rock.  This guy must have his own 737 or a fleet of nuclear powered wooden ships cause MAN HE MOVES FAST.  I'm talking Star Trek transporter levels here.  How the hell does he get his ship from KL around the continent.  Thats like Rio to Peru around the Drake Passage.  ("I wonder if he is still using the same wind we are using")

Olenna the magic warping old lady.  I'm in Dragonstone, I'm in Highgarden!  Not as bad as Euron, but why would she go there?  I mean first of all how does she get there.  Not sure how the stormlands are, but the quickest way is presumably land south of KL and go to HG.  Not exactly safe passage when queen psycho wants you dead.  Or do to Dorne and then up the pass.  I guess she took one of those bullet trains.

Also--Why would she stay in the castle if the Lannister Army shows up.  Presumably one has scouts and you could flee before they show up.  Of course since Yara didn't beleive in lookouts, perhaps Olenna did believe in scouting (Tyrells were not good at army, perhaps that skipped that whole 'scouting' thing.  Dumb plot show logic at its worst so that Jamie/Olenna confrontation goes off.

Dragons.  Hmm this big ass dragons.  Lets not use them.  I was ok with Tyrion's plan before, but again I changed my mind.  Split your forces and not play your trump card.  What are you French? (If you are french, just say Italian instead sorry).  Let them fly around dragonstone. Even if you want to 'save' the people  Wouldn't it be handy to show up and say 'uh dragons!!! Member the conquest?  I MEMBER!! YOU ALL BURNED!!!  I got 3!!  Might be more persuasive than getting you butt handed to you by Euron on the high sees with his superships.  Bet a bunch of soldiers would say--yeah uh...not fighting that.  And if they did---DRAGON SNACKS!!

Nitpick. When people post full reviews in this thread rather than nitpicks. Post this in the discussion thread! Or just post the nitpicks
