The Deuce

I still need to watch sunday's episode but here's an article about Emily Meade (Lori) getting HBO to change the way they film sex scenes:

Quote

But things were different this season on The Deuce. As Meade knelt down, a woman named Alicia Rodis, the network’s first-ever “intimacy coordinator,” was within eyeshot, watching the monitor. She had given Meade a pad for her knees, knowing that the hard floor would bruise them otherwise. Between takes, she offered mouth spray and flavored lubricant. And she had spoken with Meade before the scene about her concerns and relayed them to the director. In a moment when Meade was completely exposed, Rodis was there, providing physical, social and professional protection.

It was a welcome change that Meade herself had initiated. The previous winter, amid the roiling outcry about sexual assault and rape culture — especially in Hollywood — Meade had gone to HBO executives and demanded change. She needed some kind of advocate on the set, someone to help her when she had a sex scene to film.

It also makes it sound like Deadwood is already filming which was news to me.

Sunday's episode was great, but all the episodes have been great. Such a good show.

Really interesting article, and sounds like an idea that was long overdue given how everyone has taken to it. Good for them.

As to Deadwood, we did know production started a couple of weeks ago, so not surprised if cameras have already started rolling.

I can't say enough about how much I love this show...  I'm just trying to figure out what even make them think of this idea though... 1970's 42 st --as the premise for a TV show-- is so outside of convention, it makes one wonder what else Simon and Pelecanos have in their heads

Vinny and Frankie are apparently based on a set of real life twins one of whom's stories this is based on. At least that was the justification for having two Francos in the run up to season one. In all the interviews I've read and after the episode things it seems like Simon is unwilling to reveal the real inspiration for either Vinny or the High Hat. Which is funny cause it seems like it'd be pretty easy for the mob to figure out which twins he was talking about.

While enjoying most of the episode, I was a bit bored with Vinnie's trip to Vermont.

Emily Meade has done some wonderful acting this season. Lori's dinner with CC and meeting with Kiki were great scenes. I hope the series ends well for her.

I knew Flanagan's relationship with Anita was trouble.

Looks like the bar was the Tin Alley https://www.refinery29.com/2017/08/170121/is-the-deuce-true-story-porn-stars#slide-1

With Pelecanos maybe something set in Washington D.C.

And so overdue. But damn if Carr didn't play him well.  He was a vulnerable monster who

knew he had become irrelevant. He could have actually made the $50k he boasted about to the other pimps and he still would have resented the deal.

Loved Barbara confronting Larry like she was going to beat his ass. And Darlene having to tell him why she asked about Melissa.

Have to say I didn't see that death coming until it happened, if that makes sense? When he was at the apt and the dog was barking I instantly thought he was going to kill it. Once he got stabbed I started to think he kind of did it on purpose, like he wanted to go out like that because he knew his life as he knew it was ending and he wanted to go out like a pimp.

Y’all murdered the shit out of that motherfucker

That was as satisfying a death I’ve seen on a tv show in quite a while.

Without a doubt my favorite line.

Was anyone else shocked to see

Spoiler

Armand Assante as Vinnie and Frankie's dad?

Well-deserved stabbing and bludgeoning. I thought Bobby was going to have a heart attack though. I loved to hate CC. What a great character and portrayal by Greg Carr. I really thought the season would end with a similar situation.

Dorothy seems a bit too naïve at times for someone who was in the life and managed to escape.

Candi sure enjoys pushing her mom's buttons when she's with her.

Yes!

Spoiler

Holy crap he got old. I mean we all do, but it's like he dropped off my radar for 15-20 years.

Really good finale, and overall I think I liked this season even more than the first. Feels like there’s no wasted storylines in this show.

the writing was on the wall for Dorothy, but it still kinda shocked me they killed her off. Cheese’s death was pretty funny otoh.

I liked that the mob was more involved this season. Not sure, but I think that was the first time we heard which families Rudy and the other guy (who’s name escapes me) are part of?

It’s a shame this show seems to be so underrated. Then again hardly anyone watched The Wire when it was airing so it’s its nothing new for a David Simon series.

To be fair, the subject matter is little grim to bear, no matter how great the writing and acting is. It was less so this season but the treatment of women was hard for me to take early on during season one and I wasn't sure I could see it through. Not a show to binge I don't think.

True, but can’t the same be said for The Handmaid’s Tale? And that show is hugely popular. For the record I don’t watch that one, but it certainly sounds dark. At least The Deuce has a tiny bit of humor.

I've had to take that one in slow doses as well. As a woman I've had to curb my viewing of shows with oppression and/or violence against women and misogynistic story lines and themes. It's soul-wearying, to me, for that to be the vehicle for great entertainment/art.

I think this show is set on a three season arc for the women. S1 the women were basically powerless and simply there to be used and abused. S2 the women are finding their way through the show and clearly becoming more powerful. I assume S3 will be more of the same. Set in the 80's, more women in control of their lives, Times square getting actually cleaned up some, and the Aids epidemic beginning. The obvious aids impact character would be one of the gay men but how rough would it be if it was the 16 year old son that the father is allowing to sleep with the hookers?! Possible we see the pimp/actor in mainstream films, blaxploitation films from that time?

I was pretty shocked at Dorothy being the body they found. Was surprised they killed her off scene like that.

All in all I liked this season more than the first.
