The Deuce

Yeah, Gotti is going to be bad news for Rudy Pipilo, and that in turn is bad news for Vinnie and Frankie, I'm thinking. And Paul. And basically everyone under Rudy's wing right now. Pipilo is a criminal, but he has some basic decency, some lines he won't cross, that aren't going to be appreciated when Gotti takes out Castellano and takes over the Gambino family.

Castellano was killed near the end of 1985, so... we'll see how quickly this season moves. I'd guess Rudy wouldn't outlast him for very long.

Another great episode. It's amazing how they're able to manage to convincingly double James Franco -- that kiss, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.

It may not be too bad for Tommy Longo, though. He wants to get into the drug business, while Rudy, as you stated, has his limits.

I don't think we'll see more of Gotti. It felt more like an insert for the times and a quick contrast for Pipilo. I liked Pipilo's digs at Gotti and the quick exit so he didn't have to talk to him.

I'm pretty sure Castellano's death will be covered by the show, but only insofar as it effects the Martinos. Like they're not gonna suddenly go full mob drama in the last season. So Gotti will probably remain in the background. I can't even find who they cast as him, just this:

Quote

Grant Wilfley Casting is now casting SAG and non-union actors to work on HBO’s “The Deuce”. Casting directors are looking for lookalikes that resemble John Gotti, Angelo Ruggiero, and Wilfred Johnson. Filming will shoot on March 6th.

Also is it wrong that I'm kinda rooting for Bobby to contract A.I.D.S?

Since you mentioned casting, I had no idea the actor who plays Bobby's son is actually James Gandolfini's son, Michael.

He's also playing Tony Soprano circa 1967 in the sopranos prequel. That can't be easy for him.

My guess is that Longo will be the button man here...

I completely forgot about that prequel.

I could see that. Tommy seems to be doing a few things behind Rudy's back.

"NEXT!"

This season is really good so far.  David Morse was great. Someone needs to make a chart of all the David Simon HBO stuff and the actors who have appeared in at least two.

I hope we get to see Larry again at some point.

Damn. That episode was brutal.

....Frankie was a shithead, but he was our shithead...

... that scene with the Women Against Porn meeting was painful

... my heart bleeds for Lori... IRL we've known a few adult entertainers, and many share her utter lack of self confidence, and defeatism...

... Christ this is a great show

Frankie joking with Bobby about his wig was hilarious.

Candy just got hit with a heavy dose of reality.

Poor Lori. She's just lost.

Abbie and Vincent's relationship is just tiring at this point.

Spoiler

The only thing surprising about Frankie's death is that it didn't happen sooner. His death honestly did nothing for me.

The death was brutal but entirely expected at that point. I mean you can't go around thumbing your nose at made men and drug dealers and expect it to not end like that.  Agree about Vincent and Abby, over them a long time ago.  Candy, not sure how this will affect her, she is usually really self aware, or thinks she is, but now?

Lori is the character I have been most invested in since the beginning so

Spoiler

it sucks because I am pretty sure this show ends with her killing herself.

I hope I am wrong but I don't think so.

That was a fantastic episode. Paul and Todd, Candie reflecting on her career and its repercussions, Vincent's action, Lori's drifting and panicking. I loved Bobby's, "Can I get a thumbs up?" :) And his wig almost blowing off when he picked up Black Frankie.

The show's firing on all cylinders, IMO. Heart breaking storyline with Paul and Tod. And just little details that fit the characters so well -- Mike seeing the young man afflicted with AIDS and deciding to get tested, Donna seeing Abby again to ask for help with a character reference... Will be a shame to see the show end, but only because I love what it's doing so much.

I agree with this entire thing... this will probably be my #1 show for the year...

Spoiler

Vince killed a made guy's kid, after he had been asking about his whereabouts ... he is getting a bullet... probably when Longo whacks Pipolo, he'll do Vince too...

What a stunning performance from Maggie Gyllenhaal. What a monologue. Wow.

Also, Big Mike. :(

And RIP to ...

Spoiler

Rudy Pipilo. He was a criminal and a parasite, but he was a better man than Tommy Longo. He had some kind of standards. He was too old school and not vicious enough for the new era.

I'm guessing Tommy used the fact that Rudy claimed to have greenlit Vinnie's killing of Pasquale Cacacae to go to Gotti and offer to put Rudy down, since his own role in things was something Rudy didn't reveal and it seems no one else realized. Now only Vinnie knows. I wonder what Vincent will do if he puts two and two together... Will he think Tommy may want to take him out just to shut down the possibility of his involvement getting out?

We should embed a RIP thread within this series thread.

Another great episode. Candy has tough exterior, but she's actually quite fragile underneath.

Bobby's union speech had me laughing.

Great ending. I thought it would be one or the other. The way it played out makes it more interesting for other characters in the show.

I'm hoping for the best for Lori.
