Star Trek: Discovery #2, set phasers to stunned.

And from a relatively new watcher of Trek who doesn't have the nostalgia and memories from childhood, or attachment to the look of previous series, I'd say it has been better than fine. I've really enjoyed it and I love their commitment to showing a wider range of people - both in terms of demographics and personalities. Tilly is amazing, the complete opposite of what Stamets could appear to be. She's smart, she's possibly on the spectrum and a bit weird in her socialisation, she tells the truth when most people would obfuscate....but it's entirely rooted in compassion and being a good person. I know others haven't felt Michael the way that I did, but I don't even see much discussion of Tilly.

You could change one of two names and about 30% of the ship designs and you could make this into any generic sci-fi action series.  The only thing that made it a little Trekesque at the end was the endless lecturing.  I'm glad I didn't have to pay to watch this show.

Agreed. Also not a big Trek watcher and I really enjoyed the show as did my girlfriend who has never watched Trek in her life previously.

Tilly is her favourite character.

I think you are the exact audience they were trying to reach. They knew long-time fans like me and the others here were going to check it out so they worked extra hard to hook in people who are new to it.

I thought it was a pretty disappointing finale overall. It wrapped up way too neatly and quickly, as if it was originally planned as an entire arc for the show but then they trimmed it to one season. I agree with a previous comment that the show seemed to hit its stride around the middle, it took quite a few episodes before any kind of continuity existed for them to do more standalone plots (the Mudd time loop, for example). But I’ve been disappointed with some of the decisions they made these past few episodes, really disliked them making Mirror Georgiou a captain, Ashvoq got de-Voq’d way too easily, Michael’s pardon was pretty daft (wasn’t she up for life imprisonment? So, life unless you wrap up a war, in which case, full pardon and commendation and a medal?), L’rell blackmailing her way to Klingon leader was stupid. Mirror Georgiou is left dangling to show up predictably at some point in the future, yea let her off, I’m sure this genocidal mass murdering racist (speciesist?) won’t cause any trouble later.

And still, a whole season goes past and there’s no convincing reason to set it when they did. This is going to hamper them for the shows entire existence, nothing can ever happen that goes against continuity without them contriving a reason why it was never mentioned. They were already pushing things with a Klingon war 10 years before TOS.

It probably beats DS9’s first season (the only real contender) but it’s very hard to judge them side by side when they’re so different.

I assume we’ll get a new captain next season then? I was kinda hoping they’d just promote Saru, first alien captain of a show would be good.

Didn't Sarek say they were going to Vulcan to pick up the new captain, so maybe we'll get a Vulcan captain. Though with the Enteprise wrench thrown right at the end, things could change, or we could get a set of first episodes where Saru continues to be acting captain.

Despite my username and avatar, I don't carry any kind of torch for Star Trek. All I've seen are bits of the original series when growing up, most of the movies, and a little bit of TNG. Went into Discovery with fairly low expectations, which have been surpassed by some considerable distance. Its fair to say I loved it.

Hope Lorca and the Emperor both return for season 2, and I can't wait to see how Tyler gets on living with the Klingons.

Is he staying with the Klingons or is he staying with Mirror Georgiou?

I think it was a reasonably good season, probably the second-best opening season of a Star Trek show (DS9's first season was probably better, mainly because of Duet and the S1 finale) with some very good actors and twists.

I'm not a fan of the visual effects, which are too heavily stylised, and the look of the Klingons is ropy as fuck. But, speaking as someone who's been a fan of the franchise since seeing Star Trek II at the age of four (which is way too young, but still) thirty-five years ago, the hate for this show has been ridiculous. It's mostly been fine, accounting for the limitations (most notably the decision to make it a prequel, which made it a bit of a lame duck all too often).

Pretty much agree. It's fine, if corny and sort of full of itself. I thought it would be a lot worse, to be honest.

Other than having Sarek in the show and a needless connection to Spock thrown in I agree with you that there's nothing in the show that couldn't have just been set in a post Voyager setting.

I did enjoy the season though and it's one of the few shows I watch on a weekly basis on the day of release so it has that going for it.

I was thinking we'd get a stunt captain for next season eg someone connection to TOS but the cliffhanger suggests that isn't the case.

I'm really curious as to how they'll handle the casting of the enterprise (I can't recall how many of Pike's crew were also Kirk's crew). Spock was definitely there. Will they use the new movie cast though? In theory it'd make most sense to do just that - besides Khan there's no reason (not that there was a reason for cumberkhan) why the enterprise crew wouldn't look exactly like the movie ones. It's in the same time frame - just another universe. Or would that confuse the viewer? Or would it be more confusing to have another set of actors?

I'd like to see Zach Quinto turn up nevertheless. And hopefully we get an interesting choice for Pike.

IIRC, Discovery is set just after The Cage and about ten or eleven years before Season 1 of TOS, so it should be The Cage crew on board: Pike, Number One, Lt. Tyler (ha!), Yeoman Colt, Dr. Boyce and of course Spock. They also appeared in The Menagerie (which is mostly made up of recut footage from The Cage).

I thought spock was the only one of the TOS who was also in the pilot.

Another Tyler? Best keep an eye on him. Probably a Borg.

See, until I started reading reactions online, it never occurred to me that the Enterprise showing up was anything other than a playful cameo for the ship. I’d be surprised if it gets a passing mention in Season 2, maybe Michael notes that it was nice to see Spock again and that’s it. Seems like a whoooooole lotta trouble if you started trying to actually cast Pike and Spock (and Number One? That’d be weird.)  Quinto would just lead to a bunch of weird questions, like why isn’t Sarek the same guy, is this the JJ verse then, blah blah.....

Pretty sure it was L'Rell waiting for him at the end of his final scene with Burnham.

You are absolutely right.

I liked Mirror Georgiou's reference to her and Captain Killy subjugating Betazed and Mintaka III together. I supposed in the 24th century MU universe the Picard is going to be their God whether they believe in him or not.

Tilly is great!

Elsewhere I have seen her compared to Kirk (who is at a similar point of his career at this point in time). Smart, nerdy, ambitious.

Yeah there's no ambiguity on where Tyler went - the Mokai ship beamed him out with L'Rell.

I think that choice suggests she did legitimately kill Voq as the purely Klingon entity - if he was still buried and going to come back then she would have wanted him as a sleeper agent still.

And I don't think they were being stupid per se in letting MU Georgiou go free. It was atoning for almost breaking Star Fleet principles and setting her off on the mission in the first place, combined with an affirmation of those values. She has not committed a crime in the universe, by their principles they can't just lock her up. They know she's going to be a problem, but they will deal with that when it happens.

I think it would be more weird if they did nothing with it - especially after leaving it as a season cliffhanger. I expect there to be at least Pike and Spock in the episode. I guess they could toy with us and have spock as a hostage on a mission gone wrong and just Pike and not Kirk crew in the ep. But you don't set your main character up as Spock's adopted sister and then have his ship in an episode and the two never meeting. If you do you're probably an ex walking dead writer wanting to troll a new audience.

I'd probably need to see the first couple episodes again as I'm not sure whether I just grew used to the characterisation or it was toned down a lot. She seemed a lot more "odd" in her first appearance.

There's still far too many characters in the show who get loads of screentime and no characterisation at all. It must be really frustrating for those actors (unless they are just crew members). How many times did we see the robot eye woman raise an eye brow? Or the "GOTG nebula" character stand around in the background? I know it's the first season and they had to focus on some of the characters, and they did a good job, but it'd be nice for the characterisation not be so "all or nothing"
