So, why did Stannis attack KL?

Ok, this is a bit of trolling, yet introducing a very powerful character easily leads to this kind of questions: Why did Stannis attack King's Landing, instead of just sending Melisandre into the castle? Her shadows could have taken care of every Lannister...

CoK, Davos III

His captains and bannermen had insisted that a battlefield was no place for a woman. Only the queen's men had dissented, then the not loudly. All the same, the king had been on the point of refusing them until Lord Bryce Caron said, "Your Grace, if the sorceress is with us, afterward men will say it was her victory, not yours."

Also, Mel cannot produce any more shadow babies, at least not with Stannis:

SoS, Davos II

Quote

"Is the brave Ser Onions so frightened of a passing shadow? Take heart, then. Shadows only live when given birth by light, and the king's fires burn so low I dare not draw off any more to make another son."

And we can see this by Stannis' deteriorating health. First:

Quote

CoK, Prologue

Stannis Baratheon ... was broad of shoulder and sinewy of limb, with a tightness to his face that spoke of leather cured in the sun until it was as tough as steel ... His eyes were open wounds beneath his heavy brows, a blue as dark as the sea by night. ... His mouth ... all thin pale lips and clenched muscles.

Then:

Sos, Davos III

The look of him was a shock. He seemed ten years older than the man that Davos had left at Storm's End when he set sail for the Blackwater... The king's close-cropped beard was spiderwebbed with grey hairs, and he had dropped two stone or more of weight. ...now the bones moved beneath his skin like spears, fighting to cut free. Even his crown seemed too large for his head. His eyes were blue pits lost in deep hollows, and the shape of a skull could be seen beneath his face.

I think there is another description of him in Dance, or maybe the Winds chapter, where he looks even worse: deep-set blue eyes, almost a skeletal frame with lean, sinewy limbs and face -- it almost seems that he is starting to look like an Other...

The shadow baby making reminds me of the Story of the Night's King in book lore, the Thirteenth lord Commander of the Nights Watch who supposedly married a female Other  and every time he gave her his "seed", he lost a piece of his soul as well. Stannis may have not been losing his sole but his body, wellness and health in general took so much of a hit, that he cannot produce any more shadow babies.

because perhaps he thought that a battle would be more honorable form than witchcraft
