I know this is not the moment to try to explain that to the average voter in Alabama,
Rippounet
16 hours ago, Altherion said: And yes, invaders and refugees are seen in different light -- but when there are enough refugees, the distinction begins to blur. There's certainly no shortage of Europeans who see the current wave as an invasion rather than a humanitarian crisis. Which is the crux of the problem, frankly speaking. Seeing immigrants and refugees as "invaders" means badly misunderstanding the world we live in, and therefore, the world of tomorrow. 16 hours ago, Altherion said: .Half a century is the longest timescale at which I believe one can plausibly claim that one effect is important (and even that's a stretch). You're off by several orders of magnitude. 16 hours ago, Altherion said: If you go back further (e.g. one or two centuries), almost every society on the planet will be practically unrecognizable. "Unrecognizable" might be exaggerating a wee bit. Technological changes aside, most developed societies have been rather stable on the contrary in the past century or two. 16 hours ago, Altherion said: It's also roughly the timescale on which other groups became accepted in American society. Remember, discriminatory sentiment was once directed at the Irish, at Germans, at Eastern Europeans and many others... Yes, and as you pointed out yourself, their cultures and looks were rather similar. Not to mention religion. You can basically multiply that half-century for every significant deviation between an immigrant group and the majority. And that's assuming they are no serious economic factors undermining integration in some way. Or political. 16 hours ago, Altherion said: For example, Humanism in its original form is at best studied as a historical movement (and even then not by too many people) and the most popular of its descendants serve the same exact masters. A twisted version of it that doesn't really deserve the name. But I don't disagree with you on this one.

Well, that should make it a breeze to pass. Either they have made some really brilliant backroom deals with the moderates in advance, or they're truly out of touch with reality. Nah, I think they would rather go for something less controversial, likesay... appointing a special prosecutor for every member of the Clinton family (living or dead going back for 3 generations). And it appears that this is Senate leadership pushing this move, because Hatch apparently isn't on board. I don't see any way that this passes with the mandate repeal included. Manhole Eunuchsbane
At this point I think you have to seriously consider that the GOP is purposefully sabotaging themselves. It's not just that they don't know how to rule, they don't want to rule. It's like these guys need Obama to be in office. They know nothing else. Maithanet
No one seems to really know what including a mandate repeal even means at this point. Are they seriously trying to just repeal the mandate and leave the rest of Obamacare in place? Because everyone knows that is a nonsense plan, and as recently as 4 months ago, Republicans in Congress knew that too. Or are we looking at an actual tax cut-Trumpcare monstrosity that they're going to try and pass in the next three weeks?

But on the flip side, Republicans know (or knew early this year at least), that needed to keep most of the savings from the mandate repeal in reserve for whatever weak subsidy system they would use to eventually replace Obamacare with. If they use those savings just to finance tax cuts, they're admitting that they will never "repeal&replace" Obamacare.
