The Anti-Targ
Heard a radio interview a few days back with a guy who has dedicated many years of research into a synthetic leaf. Basically a synthetic leaf skeleton with millions of microbes seeded onto it for harnessing the power of photosynthesis to make biofuels. Which apparently is many many times more efficient than regular plant leaves. I think biofuel production using waste material in big vats to produce methane, and these synthetic leaves probably producing oils of some kind for making into diesel may provide a substantial amount of energy. Spring Bass
It'd be vastly more expensive in the short run than putting up a bunch of solar panels on Earth. Doing space solar on a large scale requires either in-space manufacturing of the panels, or a massive reduction in the mass and weight of them (plus some way to unfold them like a solar sail). If we can do that, though, then it would be a huge boon. Setting up a downlink microwave receiver in some isolated area would be relatively easy.
