I didn't get an OT vibe at all.  Reviews were stating over and over again how much it was like Empire and I just didn't see it.  For all the dialog dedicated to how 'hopeless' everything was, I never got that feeling.

This thread is going real fast but I didn't think it gave an OT vibe either, but I see some people complaining how it's not like Empire and in the next line complaining it's too much like empire. You can hate the film for one of those reasons if you like, but not both.

Yeah, no resounding similarities for me either apart from the visual callbacks.

I think there are a number of clear story beats taken from Empire but tonally the movie is wildly different to the OT, and has more in common with Guardians of the Galaxy or any of the Marvel movies than Star Wars

If you are talking about me. When I say copy I have never said it was similar to empire. For example, when rey delivers herself to ren it is copied from RotJ and when ren tries to convence rey to join him was copied from revenge of the sith. And even though the movie copied several scenes it has a tone completly diferent from other star wars. As someone said it is more similar to a marvel movie than to a sw movie.

There is a lot made of how Rian Johnson has free reign to write this movie and direct it, but in many ways it stinks of studio interference and commerical interests. Only on small occasions do you get the sense that this is one mans vision of his story being told.

This makes no sense. What part stinks of studio interference?

For me it’s that Johnson has a usually distinctive voice , but there is very little of that in this movie outside of some nice moments. Most of the movie feels like this safe, on Disney Brand, homogenous mess.

The cute animals, the odd subplot on the casino world that was largely irrelevant, the forced interactions between characters that would make good toys (Phasma for instance) , the humour that felt on brand for Disney but not for Star Wars.

Mostly it’s just hard to imagine that someone wrote that screenplay as it is and thought it made sense or worked as a piece of storytelling. Either Johnson is a poor writer ( which is possible as I think Looper and Brick are pretty overrated) or his script was pulled apart and put back together again by a number of commerical interests. I kind of hope it’s the latter for his sake.

See I can understand why people don't like things about this movie but I find this one really strange. Sure, some of the tone is jocular (though I find this is hardly new to SW), but in terms of the direction the story took it's both (1) far more extreme than anything in Marvel in terms of the brutality visited on the heroic side, and (2) the opposite of safe in terms of what it did to the expectations and conventions associated with this sort of film in general and what people thought was going to happen in this in particular. Heck, its constant subversions is half of what a lot of people hate about it.

Also, commercial interests and things being included to sell toys is a veritable Star Wars tradition. Heck, in many ways Star Wars is what started that whole concept when Lucas managed to persuade Fox to give him sole rights to the merchandise for it and took off from there. So the idea that this film is particularly weighed down by the cute animals is just... the Porgs were a whoooole lot less involved and distracting than the Ewoks, for me.

Someone on another site pointed out this had the least amount of new races/aliens/weird things than any other SW film to date, and yeah, introducing stuff to sell toys...SW has been doing that loong before Marvel was making movies. Saying well it must be bad because the studio interfered is just deflecting. If you don't like the movie you didn't like the movie but when you start blaming shadowy disney execs...you're reaching now. Hell, Ridley Scott is one of my favorite directors, Alien is my second favorite film of all time, and I thought Alien Covenant was one of the worst films OF ALL TIME, but I'm not sitting here going oh well obviously the studio interfered...somehow.

The film was entirely worth seeing just for the ending with Luke. And the shot of Luke with the dual suns and Binary Sunset playing . . . :) I felt like the kid seated next to me who was shadow lightsabering during every fight scene.

I can forgive the Cantino Bight arc because of that ending. But that arc did give me some flashbacks to the prequel trilogy *shudders*

The hyperspace kamikaze scene was amazing! Who cares if it didn't make sense. This is fucking Star Wars!@!@!!! The bombers, Poe's dog fighting and bombing runs. It all looked great.

Loved the whole Force story with Luke/Kylo/Rey.

So whilst Snoke's ship might drop behind (note: a 60,000-metre-wide ship looks cool but is moronically impractical)

This thread moves so fast, it's hard to keep up. So, someone could have mentioned this already, but...

While impractical, it sure makes for one hell of a target. And if I recall correctly, Holdo's attack hit it off centre by quite a margin. Enough of a margin to completely miss a regular old Star Destroyer?

Problem solved, perhaps? You need a target that big to have any chance of actually connecting with it?

Well none of the ships in Star Wars have ever made practicality wise. I  mean, some of them have wings, In space.
