The Last Jedi, not the last spoiler thread

I'm trying to decide what is worse.  Star Wars: The Last Jedi, or Game of Thrones Season 7 (and season 6, and season 5, and the last episode of season 4).  If there's anything that Game of Thrones taught me, is that all it takes is 20 good men to completely cripple an opposing army.  It looked like the resistance had 20 good men on the Falcon at the end of the movie, so they are clearly going to emerge victorious.

I have my complaints with the structuring and gaping plot holes of TLJ, but GOT bad?

I don't know man...

At the very least, it's quite clear that TLJ and Rian Johnson are darlings with respect to Disney, so whether or not you are correct (you're not) doesn't end up mattering a whole lot; Johnson is the future of Star Wars.

This is undeniable, and I don't think it's fair to compare TLJ's BO to TFA's.  BUT, it is still fair to wonder if Johnson - or Abrams for that matter - is the proper steward to shepherd the franchise henceforth.  As has been said here and many other places, it's a hard nut to crack.  There's always going to be a tug of war between observing fidelity to the OT while making something that is a discernible and unique contribution.  I think Johnson favored the latter too much in TLJ while Abrams favored the former too much in TFA.  And out of the two, I prefer TLJ.

I just wonder about the future.  Rian Johnson's TLJ essentially shat all over the narrative threads Abrams established in TFA.  You can say "kill the past" as much as you want, but I do wonder what that means for his own trilogy.  Moreover, as for Abrams finishing this trilogy, count me as one that is entirely uninterested in the conclusion now.  So...Rey and Ben are gonna fight...again.  Great.  Wonder who's gonna win.  TLJ made me either uninterested and/or dislike the other main characters I thought were important to the trilogy - no longer give two shits about Poe or Finn.

1 Never said they weren t. Just that they started mentioning some problems of the movie and in the beguining the movie was perfect...

In the beginning the reviews were less spoilery. As it came out, the spoilers commenced.

2 Right now it has generated less 30% of income (in usa) that TFA did in its first 11 days. That is significantly less.

Citation very much needed. Right now TLJ has made close to 800 million at the box office. In the USA, it made $400m, compared to $540m that TFA did in its two weeks. It has made about 70% of what TFA did.

Is it doing as well as TFA did? Nope. Is it going to likely do so? Probably not, given how much excitement there was about a star wars movie that hopefully didn't suck for the first time in 10 years vs. seeing a good star wars movie every year. Does this indicate that people like it less? Not really.

Yeah, that's my main concern - Abrams is just going to say 'no, really, what Johnson did was wrong' and go another way. I think it might be okay given that Abrams does a good job aping others, so if he's given something to go with he might take that to 11, but he won't fuck with it for the sake of fucking with it.

Well, somehow I figure that the good guys beating the bad guys was gonna happen. :)

I guess I'm hopeful that the beats about the grand rich ruling everything one way or another gets actually taken care of some. That the thing that comes out of Leia's resistance isn't another rebellion, but a revolution, that notes that doing the same thing doesn't seem to fix anything, and only continues the cycle of good and evil constantly fighting while the galaxy is demolished and the rich get richer. I don't know that Abrams can do that kind of subtlety, but I think Johnson, unshackled of some of the past, can do some interesting things there, especially with force users that aren't Jedi/Sith.

I care about Finn but more importantly care a lot about Rose.

And I'm really really hopeful that Luke comes back as a ghost to fuck with Ren.

Jesus man, Rose? She was a lot better after leaving Casino Blight (not autocorrected), but nothing special...

Meanwhile, Luke not only said he'd always be with Ren but that he'd 'see him around' so I wouldn't be surprised if Luke and Yoda constantly and loudly discuss moisture vaporators whenever he tries to sleep.

Eta:

Yoda: Tell me again you will, about the time you beat Vader!

Ren: I CAN'T HEAR YOU! I CAN'T!

Luke: So this crippled asshole with a breathing problem starts trying to tear me down right? And his boy, the emperor, is over there talkin' MAD shit....

Rose is the legitimate child of Mrs. Dorothy Mantooth and is a saint.

I love Rose. I love that she's optimistic and energetic but not naive. She takes delight in things but still recognize the shittiness of the general situation. She's fun, and funny, and has nice chemistry with Finn.

I just want him to be posing over Ren every single time he goes to sleep with a fake saber, yelling 'psych!'

I wish

I suspect you never cared about it until you felt a need to defend TLJ by bringing down your esteem for the previous films rather than simply defending TLJ on its merits.

The Pyrrhic school of film criticism is interesting, though.

(In any case, TESB was the second film in the franchise, with a universe of potential before it, and it didn't try to explain some things, which meant that whatever explanation they developed after the fact -- backup hyperdrive, whatever -- would be acceptable. TLJ literally creates something new -- hyperspace tracking, which is fine -- and then by the very rules it introduces for this new thing shoots itself in the foot with what turns out to be an idiot plot. This is bad writing.)
