DavidDavid
Were the dragon eggs always made of stone/petrified? Or only the ones that Daenerys had? Any connection to greyscale? Or the curse of valiryans?
Dragonsbone
They were "dead" eggs. Eggs turned to stone, who were layed once by dragons. Daenerys woke them to life again.

btfu806
They were just petrified eggs. When Dany went into the pyre with them a "magical event" happened and caused dragons to appear, as well as her not being burned alive (in the books, Dany is not fire proof). I don't know if we ever really hear more about that event or ever will.
mcchickyn
I wonder if it makes any difference her possessing "random" eggs as opposed to if she got eggs from Targ dragons.

IDK, but I hope there are some more under Winterfell!
Byfort of Corfe
For Planetos it was a miracle, akin to Arthur pulling the sword from the stone. As pointed out they were petrified, nothing to do with greyscale.
Euron III Greyjoy
My guess is that the further the eggs are from Dragonstone, a place of magic, the more petrified them became.
