Fucking hell, trans teens that were already on blockers are having their access cut off - I'd assumed it would just block new patients. That's so colossally cruel and will kill kids. It's hard enough waiting to get a chance to be yourself, having had access to it only to have it snatched away absolutely destroys hope for the future.

It should always be noted most of the people pushing for things like have nothing to say about gender reassignment surgery on babies if they’re intersex.

It's just a massive Thames size shit river flowing out of the UK atm. I've seen that same detransitioner behind the blockers case pushing for schools to include explicit conversion therapy and a Russian anti gay "propaganda" law for trans people covering social media in the UK. The right wing fucks have really picked a winner when they found them, and I don't give a fuck how much they suffered - when their response to that is to try ruin the lives of everyone else they're fucking evil and can fuck the hell off.

Fucking hell, I felt like gagging when I heard that.

Jesus Christ.
This really pisses me off. I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen people cry free speech whenever any transphobe got a negative consequence for their actions.

Even if it was harassing transwomen that had to be defended because free speech.

If the UK gives a propaganda law like that not one of those assholes will criticize it for it being a blantant attack on free speech.

I'm supporting the Good Law Project who (among other things) are working in the UK to legally challenge anything which threatens trans rights. Information here if you want to and can financially support this campaign:

Thanks for posting those @Sophelia and for your support. Another place that might merit a donation is Mermaids UK, an organization that specifically supports trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming young people. https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/

Never mind. I answered my own question.

The solicitor who brought the case against The Tavistock apparently has form, having pursued similar cases relating to LGBT teens and also abortion rights.

Yeah, he apparently is also a homophobe.

Not surprising.

He even helped push for a higher age of for homosexuals. The guy’s clearly a massive bigot who’ll use children to his advance his bigotry.

Heaven’s to bet if he got his way same-sex relations would be illegal for anyone.

The money behind this movement is American Christian dominionists, their goals are more ambitious than attempting to wipe out LGBTQI people - this is their wedge to go after abortion and contraception.

Of course. Their abusive shit gays are stepping stones to other bad shit.

It hurts my head to Terfs, or vehement transphobic gays complain that their rights are under attack by trans people.

As their used as tools further the goals of people who’d actually see any right right or protection they claim to care about stripped.

Yeah I was gonna say, that shit's everywhere.

That always needs to be recognized.

I came across this article.

Sodomy laws have been enforced relatively recently in the developed world in many places.

Take Britain;

Or the US.

I know this may sound odd, but I really wish people would talk more about this sort of stuff in terms of talking about recent oppression of gay people.

A baby step in the right direction but these days i take whatever nuggets of good news i can find and run with them

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/14/blood-donor-rules-to-be-relaxed-for-gay-and-bisexual-men-in-england?CMP=fb_gu&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&fbclid=IwAR1_3lnU2JLW-q7GPBdPUyl8E5e80yL3Hb_tu3TC-dGr139aDeI57tYbHNs#Echobox=1607929717

I was a blood donor (can’t now for various reasons) and was always angry at the exclusion. Especially when i would see the “we need thousands of new donors to meet demand” adverts. Um, be less discriminatory and you have a whole bunch of donors just ready and waiting.

I had actually heard from a few places that various lgbtq+ groups had been running blood drives this summer after quarantine as many people were eligible who ordinarily weren’t.

Anyway, as I say, baby steps, but a tiny nugget of good is welcome these days.

I’m trying to consume more LGBTQIA+ media at the moment, by which i mean both media produced by queer artists/actors/writers/producers etc. And media which gives the community a platform and tells their stories. Looking for any recommendations people may have - fiction or non-fiction, books, films, tv, podcasts, anything really. I have been having a lot of discussions lately with my therapist and i would like to rectify my ignorance of so much of LGBTQIA+ history and culture and i hope i’m not being intrusive asking for recommendations here. I can repost in the entertainment and/or lit threads if need be

Oh I got a zillion -- comes with the territory of being in a professional org for transgender journalists! Here's one: https://translash.org/podcast/ and here's another: https://www.genderpodcast.com/  both are highly recommended.

Oh yeah, and read Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas -- a YA novel with a transmasculine Latinx main character (and there's way more gay in there too), and written by a transmasc Latinx author!

Also really good: Disclosure (on Netflix). And if you've never seen Paris Is Burning, watch that first. You will recognize so many things out of that documentary. (It is not without criticism, which they get into in Disclosure, but it's still a compelling examination of a particular culture of BIPOC GNC, queer, and trans people in the 80s. Also I recommend "Pose" because it's straight-up amazing to see so many Black and POC trans people being hired to portray their lived experiences.)

EXECUTIVE. REALNESS.

ETA: One thing that is of VITAL IMPORTANCE. Do not consume any media about trans people that is made by cis people, or any media about queer people that is made by heterosexual people. Beware of trauma porn -- like the only story worth telling about queer people is when we're abused or oppressed. Cishet people fucking LOVE that shit, and it is trash. Do not reward cishet people trying to make a buck off of queer people's lives and especially queer people's pain.

ETA2 -- if you'd like some sapphic cinema, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is directed by a queer woman and one of the two main actors is also a queer woman.

I'll try think of other recommendations, but the one that jumps to mind first is actually the exception that proves this rule.

The trans lesbian vampire movie Bit is absolutely fantastic for the kind of representation I was craving. I'd say its fantastic "for a movie made by a cis guy" but it doesn't actually deserve that qualifier, which is what makes it such an outlying exception. It stars Nicole Maines (from Supergirl) as the main character, the marketing material is the only thing that ever explicitly says the character is trans but her having that history is fundamental to the movie. You can feel its shape around the way she acts, the way her family interact with her etc. There's one particular moment where its like the director reached into my brain and pulled out my fears just so that he could dash them on the rocks. Its not just speaking to us, its talking to us in our own language if you will.

I'm not sure if there will be anywhere Helena can watch it legally, it definitely wasn't available for purchase on Amazon Prime in Aus but I know it is in the US. It was also on Tubi at some point, but its not in Aus anymore so not sure on that front either.

I haven't seen the movie in question, but here's the amendment to my rule: if a person with an identity that is reflected in a given piece of media recommends it (e.g. a transgender person recommends a movie with transgender themes/characters), even if it's done by a cis and or het person, then it's worth considering.

BTW @HelenaExMachina -- thank you for asking for recommendations in this thread! I know I typed a wall of text but it's because I've been thinking a lot about representation over the last couple of years, and about whose stories and experiences should be centered, and whose voices should be lifted up. And for too goddamned long, straight people have been drowning out the voices of gay, lesbian, and bisexual/pansexual people and our experiences, and cisgender people have stolen wholesale the stories of trans people's lives for profit. (The same thing happens with other intersections of oppression: white people steal stories from people of color for awards and profit; and men constantly are lauded/rewarded for telling women's stories while women attempting to do the same are ignored.)

This is brilliant, thank you so much! The podcasts especially, i consume podcasts at an alarming rate during lockdown and these will make perfect listening.

I love POSE, and it was at least in part watching it that kicked off this, as i realised how little I knew about this history and how things evolved. I wanted to dive in and see what was accurate, where the deviations were etc. I wish I had been taught these things in school, especially as understanding the struggles the LGBTQIA+ community has had and continues to have seems more urgent than a whole lot of other history we are taught at school. But that’s another topic.

On your ETA too, that is a great point and why I decided to ask here. I am sure I could find any number of “Top 10 shows/films/books with LGBTQIA+ Representation” but the chances of those lists being in any way useful isn’t high. Whereas I know those who post in this thread are not only part of the community but also very smart people with great insights and who have shown incredible restraint and patience throughout my time on the Board trying to educate others. So a huge thank you to all of you
