I know that feeling, I recently did the same thing with my birthday cake. Plus it's like, you know, for your birthday so you feel extra entitled to it, as if the universe is just going to ignore that it's unhealthy because it's your birthday. Sounds like you're doing well with your workouts though, even with all the traveling, and I'm sure it'll be fine!

I made it to the gym today for the first time in a few weeks. Now I have limp noodle arms. Not sure how I'm going to wash my hair.  Unfortunately I won't be getting back into tip-top shape soon as I am having surgery on Thursday to remove a cyst from my wrist. This will limit my upper body workouts, and anything involving gripping with both hands, for weeks (not sure exactly how long I can expect for recovery). Ah well. I'll be glad to have the damn thing gone, it's really been irritating me for over a year now. I had this same surgery in college and all was well for a while, but it was a persistent little guy and came back. Hopefully I don't have to do this again in another 11 years.

Also I noticed one of the feet on my scale at home had become lopsided. I straightened it out, and weighed myself again, and it was about 4 pounds more. So I've been underweighing myself for an indeterminate amount of time now! I know it's just a number and doesn't change anything about my actual body, but it's still really disheartening and means I actually need to lose TEN pounds.

Best of luck with that surgery.  Sounds like an unfortunate interruption to exercise.  Didn't you say you were returning to school/work too?  I can't imagine that's helpful for typing or writing.

I still have not contacted the sports physician about my hamstring.  Obviously work travel and vacation was a big distraction, but I'm kind of hoping it will just get better itself.  Even though it's now 4-5 months.  Stop procrastinating!!

Thanks! Luckily it's my left wrist so I should hopefully be able to muddle along okay. And yep, classes start again on Monday!

Get thee to the doctor!!

Shame.  Regret.  Self-loathing.

I ate a disgusting amount of chocolate cake last week.  My wife bought a cake for my birthday, but she and our son only had a small slice each.  They are bizarrely indifferent to chocolate cake.  So there I was, exhausted from jet lag and no reserves of will power to resist, eating the entire cake slice by slice, night by night.  This was not a small or lightweight cake.

Our vacation had already left me with ten days of unhealthy eating, and then I added another five.  Now I really need to clean up my diet and shed a few pounds.

I got back to the gym at the weekend for my first heavy weights in three weeks.  It went pretty well.  Just slightly below my PB levels immediately prior to vacation, but pretty respectable and still leaves my room to progressively improve again.  Lots of muscle soreness afterward though, much more than I experienced prior to vacation.

Man, have that damn cake. What's the big deal? It's not as if you're a pro athlete and will be letting your teammates down with your lack of discipline or anything like that.

Why not enjoy it instead of ruining a great chocolate cake experience with self-loathing and regret?

I enjoyed it at the time, but less with each slice.  Junk food palls quickly at that volume.  The regret comes later, like an emotional indigestion.

When I’m eating junk food because I’m too exhausted or stressed to resist, then it just feels like I’m succumbing to an addiction, not doing something of my own volition for pleasure.

Then it sounds like you have a problem

On a more serious note, while eating healthy is great, I have no problems with or regrets over sometimes eating junk food or drinking soda when I feel like it, as long as it doesn't turn into a regular thing.

Pretty much this. I eat crappy food fairly often. Life is too short to stress about the little things. As long as it isn't every meal every day you'll be alright.

This is probably a rather German (Austrian, French...) perspective, but a good quality cake (homemade or from a good traditional bakery/confiserie) is most certainly NOT junk food.

Anyway, if the furnace burns hot enough it will burn anything.

Been satiating my sweet tooth with different fat bombs and I can already see results.  Down 5 lbs in 3 weeks and for the first time that I've ever been on a diet it doesn't look like I'm losing any muscle mass.  If anything I think I might have gained some muscle and lost even more fat.  I've also had 5 bacon cheeseburgers (no bun) in the last 3 days and last night for dinner I whipped myself up some chicken, mayo, and chopped avocado for an impromptu chicken salad, and it was delicious.  It doesn't even feel like a diet at this point.

Yeah, our cakes suck.

same - I generally eat very cleanly 6 days a week and have a blow out day on Saturday; I will also at times (like tonight after a shit day at work) throw on a pizza and enjoy it.

I have this rule about junk food, sodas etc. - when I feel like having some I just wait and see if I'd feel the same in 5 minutes. At least 80% of the time I forget about it and move on. Your percentage may vary but either way eating unhealthy is a spur of the moment kind of thing. Try to resist the initial impulse and you're very likely to avoid it.

Of course, there are moments such as @Greywolf2375 talks about when you just need a pizza.

I meant junk food in general, not the cake in question. Your point definitely stands, though. Both for cakes and furnaces.

  • 2 weeks later...

Signed up for the Wodapalooza online qualifier; first two workouts are this week.  150 DU, 60 wall balls, 30 chest to bar pull ups 150 DU with a 12 minute cap workout two is 3 minutes of 165lb clean and jerks, 2 minutes of rest and then a one rep clean and jerk.  Not really set back by any of that but I don't have butterfly chest to bar so that is going to slow me down compared to the other old guys.  Should be good workouts and fun anyway,

Last week was good.  Getting back into a rhythm after vacation.

Shoulder press was a new PB.  I’m now doing 9-10 reps per set at 160lbs, and adding sets.  Unfortunately that’s the max weight available in our building’s gym.   And pull-ups were 8x10 again, the PB level I reached before vacation.

I did a legs day on Sunday, my first after 4-5 months of rest for my hamstring.  I did squats and leg curls (no deadlifts yet until I know if I can handle those too).  I limited squats to only 200lbs, which was a good challenge after such a long gap.  No hamstring pain during the exercise but the tightness returned at the very same spot all week since.  So definitely time to go see the sports specialist about this.  I also had lots of DOMS for a couple of days, no surprise.

Then bench press and cable rows on Wednesday.  My set at 180lbs felt so good that I pushed on to 190lbs for seven reps a new PB (I’ve done 2-3 reps before at 200lbs, but not a full set).

Feeling good but low on sleep all week.

We’re on a trip for the weekend but I’ll see what’s available at the gym here.
