Tennis Volume 7: Roger That!

Yes, I think Nadal would have beaten Djokovic easily, and he'll still probably beat Thiem pretty easily too.

Thiem has defeated Nadal on clay before, but not in a best-of-five.

I'll be interested if Thiem can make his career into something more than just a clay-court specialist.

My issue, specifically with you, is that you completely reject trying to have any degree of empathy for her. I asked you to close your eyes, imagine that you’re a black woman who lived in the hood of all hoods in the U.S., and that you came up through a sport that is soaked in racism, sexism and classism, and that given all that, can you imagine that you might blow up in a heated moment when you feel you are being mistreated for the reasons I laid out. You categorically refused to do that, called the official a brave man, and said that Serena is a brat, a jerk, and she should shut her mouth.

You are aware that Serena is not unique on the tour for having a rough childhood?

Djokovic, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic lived through their country being bombed when they were in their early teens or even younger. Cilic literally grew up in a war zone. None of them are given special treatment for that nor do they expect it.

Also, Serena feeling she's been mistreated in the heat of the moment is one thing. Never apologizing for her reaction nor ever admitting she overreacted is something else entirely. Serena is a brat and a jerk. And while I wouldn't say she or anyone else should shut their mouth, she should definitely think twice before speaking because of all the media attention she knows her actions will attract.

Thiem has taken a set off Nadal but he has always seemed to be playing catch up. Nadal serving for the championship!

Thiem has some skills though. Not just offensively, he's a great defender on clay too. He made Nadal play a lot more balls than anyone else would have, Djokovic included.

Murray comeback is on. Good to see him winning. Even if it is doubles.

Imagine how many slams he could of won if the other three didn't exist. It's pretty bad luck to be an elite athlete while also having the three best ever play with you. That probably explains some of his attitude issues in the earlier parts of his career.

I'm going to visit Wimbledon for the first time in my life this year. I'm pretty excited. Granted, only for the first two days (plus qulifiers on the weekend), but that's all I was hoping for anyway. A possibility to watch players like Federer or Nadal live? How cool is that?

Barty is a chance to be No. 1 if she wins in Birmingham. A pretty meteoric rise for someone who had, up until this year, never gone past the 4th round in a Slam and hadn't cracked the top 10. It's extra impressive given that she doesn't have the power game of the other top women's players and is more that counter-punching style.

Well, I travelled to London for a holiday and had my first experience ever going to Wimbledon in person. I'm here with my Dad, who's just retired and it was on his bucket list to go to the UK. Following a tip from a friend we went in the early afternoon and the fabled queue was non-existent, we were waved pretty much straight in and got a ground pass straight away. Brilliant experience, they organise things well here.

Will be interesting to see how the Nadal/Kyrgios match goes.

Glad to see that Tomic got fined his whole prizemoney for tanking again. The dude just needs to retire and find another life somewhere. I can't believe he'd be making much money from tennis, despite what he says.

Heh, I queued for 5 hours, even got a sticker that proves that fact, and also got admission to the grounds only, but at least I could watch the games from the start. I agree it's perfectly organised and the experience is unforgettable. Been able to see Cori Gauff dismissing Venus, a real generation change in action.

Oh yes, there are downsides to going in the early afternoon - you don't see the first matches, and you're kind of scrounging for seats at the start when all the matches are underway. You can kind of only go to the match of your choice if it starts in the late afternoon. But I was there mainly for my virgin Wimbledon experience, so I was happy to get whatever I could.

Men's draw - despite many upsets of other seeds, the Big Three are still there so when it comes to the semifinals it will probably have a familiar look, with Raonic the fourth semifinalist playing Djokovic.

Women's draw - looks more exciting to me. A Konta vs Kvitova matchup in the fourth round - Kvitova had no preparation for this tournament but she looks strong and Wimbledon is her favourite tournament having won it twice before. Grass suits her high-risk, big-hitting style. A potential quarterfinal match-up between Barty and Serena Williams would be fantastic - Serena hasn't been playing her best tennis, so if Barty can get her moving around the court she should win. Pliskova and Halep should probably emerge from the bottom half of the draw, but grass is Halep's worst surface and she's got an intriguing matchup against Gauff next.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I am pleased the big three are through so far and that we can look forward to major clashes in week two, that is better to me than upsets and missed opportunities.

Agreed - I want to see high quality tennis matches between those playing the best tennis at that moment in time.

That generally means those at the top of the rankings; but if someone else is having a stormer, then means them.

On top of that, you've got the narrative context of the big rivalries - which again generally means looking to the guys who've been at the top for a long time and have those rivalries

Oh, it's good to see the Big Three still in but it seems like a given they'll beat all their opponents, so not much to watch for in the next few days until we get to the semis.

Whereas the women's draw has some more exciting matches from these current rounds already - although Barty's surprise loss means we won't get to see Serena vs Barty.
