The first three books were generally great but they were a comedic diversion from the tale and they were the most unbelievable cartoon style characters from the first three. That said GRRM has since introduced fleshed out characters such as Asha, Euron and Ramsay who are all utterly ridiculous and one dimensional, so maybe they will have a big part in the story. Ramsay is not that fleshed out, but just a minor role with a focus on unfolding the storyline. Euron and Asha are strange, though. However, I don't feel characters like Robb oder Catelyn to be that much better to begin with.
