New banner that floats at the top of the site

Is there any way to get rid of it? I hate floating banners and frankly it takes up 20-25% of the page I'd rather see posts or threads on.

I can't be the only one who finds that jarring or annoying.

Example

It's why we picked it, in fact. Having the ability to always access your activity streams or the browse options is pretty sweet. we're trying to figure out how to get the mobile nav bar to act similarly for those on mobile devices.

It would be good if you can make it smaller. I think you can make it 40% smaller by cutting the empty space from the top and bottom. Even more if you reduce the size of the "A Forum of Ice and Fire" text.

Once you scroll down, it collapses down as small as it is possible to have it and still keep the logo.

It doesn't collapse for me in Chrome, Safari, or IE at any point. It's as large at the bottom of the page as at the top before I scroll down.

This would be my preferred solution. Honestly it's probably 50% or more unused space. If it collapsed to a smaller logo the size of the buttons on the right, that would be pretty much perfect.

Give us a screen shot of what you're talking about, because for us it collapses on Windows 10 with Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Seamonkey, and Edge, and on Safari on iOs as well.

I'd also ask if you have extensions that may be interfering, as Tucu noted that seemed to be part of the problem.

I took a full page screenshot using Firefox with extensions enabled. If you scroll to the bottom you will see the full size banner. I need to check which extension is doing this; one of them is probably blocking the script that resizes the banner.

Yeah, it'd be useful to know which it is. It may be something that can be worked around.

It seems that some extensions are blocking a tracking script/url related to the banner.

I think the problems are with these URLs I took from the debugger and pasted to pastiebin:

https://www.pastiebin.com/5af767edba8f

Extensions that deal with tracking protection, block scripts or block ads are banning these url, probably causing the resizing to fail.

In my case it seems that both Ghostery and uBlock Origin can break the script, although the Firefox built-in Tracking Protection also blocks some parts (but without stopping the resizing)

The thing about the header is that it doesn't have the ad code, so ... yeah, Ghostery and uBlock seem to be going a bit overboard somehow. Do you use any special blacklists with those?

If I paste those URLs into the address bar with uBlock enabled I get that the filter applied is:

"||casalemedia.com^"

Not sure why the banner is trying to load a script from caselemedia, but this part of the URL tells me that the banner and that script are related: "index.php%3F%2Ftopic%2F151012-new-banner-that-floats-at-the-top-of-the-site"

So using uBlock Origin as well, I'm not seeing the issue. Here's what my blocklists look like: https://imgur.com/a/J7lKPZM

Basically the standard list. Are you using any additional lists? If you uncheck them and then reload the site with just uBlock running, does that fix the issue?

I had some extra lists enabled (Fanboys's annoyances and social) so I did a reset to defaults of uBlock. My list now matches yours and uBlock is the only extension enabled, but the resizing still doesn't work

This is my current list.

I copied the contents of the Debugger to pastiebin in case you want to compare the output of your PC:

Wouldn't it be more useful to have the Notifications and Messages button on that banner instead of all of these options? (I personally never use them, maybe the majority of people click Activity, Wiki, and the rest that much more often than Notifications and Messages, but to me these two are much more useful, and they are the ones that don't stay up there.) And the Browse button just takes you to the front forum page, which is ... the same as if you click on the name of the forum?

So I briefly had the situation where uBlock was preventing the header from shrinking on scroll.

I did the default thing, but I also cleared all caches and had it download fresh copies of all the filters. Now the header collapse works fine. Try updating your filters, if uBlock hasn't done so lately, and let me know if it makes any difference...

Actually, happened again. Now I seem to have narrowed it down to one filter: EasyPrivacy. Going to try and see what in it is erroneously matching our page.
