Will they give him the coin to do what he needs to do?

This is what every West Ham fan is waiting to find out.  The squad he’s inherited isn’t ideally suited to his playing preferences to say the least.  We’ve got some quicker players who can’t pass (Kouyaté, Antonio, Fernandes), some slower players who can pass (Noble, Cresswell, Snodgrass) and a few who have both (Lanzini, Arnautović, Masuaku) but who are inconsistent.

I’ll be interested to see what he can do with what he has and also who he’s able to bring in.

Fwiw, I’m pretty excited. I didn’t hate Moyes, but his football was pretty dire for the most part, which definitely is a criticism that can’t be leveled at Pellegrini.

I'm pumped that they actually signed him. I didn't hate Moyes either, he kept them in the Premier League it was touch and go for a bit though. If Pelligrini can get the best out of his guys and bring in the right pieces he might do well.

And perhaps we will get to see what Chicharito is capable of?

It WILL be exciting.  Perhaps disasterous, but definitely exciting.

Word on the street is still that Silva’s the favourite to take over at Everton.

However, in what I choose to look at as positive news, our incoming DOF - who hasn’t started his job yet - wants to be involved, talking to/interviewing Silva himself. If this DOF is as good as his reputation from Holland suggests (*cough* Alfonso Alves *cough*), that’s good. Would be great if someone could take charge from the get-go.

Also being reported that Rooney is on his way to MC. Which, of course, MC will take stoically on the chin.

Sigh. Rooney. Alas I won't be seeing much of him myself. The supporters group I am in is boycotting the new stadium. Rooney is being signed to not only help sell seats but to help sell the team. D.c. is owned by a group who cares nothing about on field results or supporters. They want money only.  So the stadium is not was promised. No safe standing and only a half stand for supporters to start. They then made a ticket deal with one group giving them total financial control of the section alienating and leaving out the other two groups. Modern football is here.

I guess I could be flippant, and say that Rooney is more an improvement than a negative, but that sort of sh@t is what slowly eats away my interest in football.

I know that pining for the fjords .. sorry, the good old days ... isn’t accurate in most respects, as the world slowly improves. But I really feel that football is being ruined by the commercial aspect.

Granted, the quality on the pitch, and the coverage, have all improved with commercialism. I just happen to think that - on balance - it used to be better.

Whoever picks up Ander Herrera's getting a real bargain.

Herrera won't be sold. Carrick has retired and Fellaini is most likely leaving. His contract expires at the end of June and reports say that he is unlikely to renew since United refuse to meet his wage demands. That leaves us with just Pogba, Matic, Herrera and Mctominay in midfield.

Obviously Herrera's a massive annoyance at times, but I've always rated him as a player - do you think Fred would replace him?

He might not be sold immediately but for 50mil Fred isn't coming in as a squad player, and Jose's not going to drop Matic. Herrera's the one who's going to lose out and there's only so many times he's going to take forcing his way into the first team only to be shoved back down the order by a new manager and/or signing before he goes 'fuck it' and asks to leave.

Competition and depth is good. I think Herrera will stick around and should get enough game time over the course of a long season and four competitions. Herrera is good at making tackles, interceptions and being an all round nuisance in disrupting the opposition but offers practically nothing on the creative side. If Pogba isn't playing or having a bad game, our midfield becomes downright pedestrian. At the end of the day, we are short in midfield and need reinforcements. Four midfielders, one of whom is an inexperienced Mctominay, is not enough for four competitions especially since Mourinho has moved to a three man midfield.

He's a good coach adept at getting the most out of the players at his disposal. In his three full seasons at Sevilla they finished 5th, 5th and 7th and won three straight EL titles with a small squad and at a time when the club were having financial problems and thus restricted in the transfer market. The EL runs and small squad took a toll on their league form. He also did a very good job at Valencia finishing in the top 4 in two out of three seasons at a time when the club had crippling debt and were forced to sell their best players.

He did okay at PSG but faced a lot of interference from the board and that 6-1 against Barca puts a black mark on his tenure. PSG is also a bit of a poisoned chalice. Sure, the manager will have enormous resources but has to contend with board interference, too much player power, domestic achievements being marginalised and anything less than a CL semi-final/final will be regarded as a failure.

Do many people expect liverpool to win the CL? All things being equal you have to think (unfortunately) that real have far more experience in this sort of match which has to count for something.

I not particularly unbiased but I think it's a strange one. Real have won it 3 out of the last 4 seasons and they've got a number of brilliant players, they should be massive favourites but for me they're not really. I don't think they're that good of a team, they're certainly vulnerable defensively and they didn't particularly do well against Spurs' pressing game in the group. If Liverpool's attack click they could easily score a lot of goals but you could say the same about Real.

I've seen quite a few people say it'll be a high scoring tight game like a 3-2 or a 4-3 but I actually think whoever wins will win by a decent margin. I'm just not sure which way it's going to go.

How good is this Emery chap? I read that he went a full season at Sevilla without winning an away game.

Trophies won in the last five years:

Unai Emery: 10
Pep Guardiola: 9
Jose Mourinho: 4
Antonio Conte: 4
Jurgen Klopp: 2
Mauricio Pochettino: 0

I'll say the man likely knows his way around a dressing room.

Real are favourites but not by much imo as their tactics will suit Liverpool. Real will control possession as they have the better midfield but Liverpool have workhorses in midfield who will run their socks off, look to catch players in possession and then a quick release to the front three - basically similar tactics to those they employed against City.

Real's form in the 2nd half of the season has been much improved though. Ronaldo has also been banging in goals since January as well. This is not the same struggling Real Madrid that faced Spurs earlier in the season.

We’re definitely underdogs.  Real have so much more experience in game management and situations like this; we have nothing on the bench if we get an injury, need a game-changer or if it goes to extra time; we’re much less confident away from Anfield; and Real will get favorable refereeing decisions (not least because they work so hard to con the ref).  I really hope we don’t lose our cohesion like we did against Sevilla in the EL final.

But we still have a chance.  Our entire CL run has been about blitzing teams for goals and then trying to hang on when we run out of energy.  It’s a risky strategy, but it gives us a better chance than if we just play a measured game for 90 minutes.  Real would comfortably pick us off if we tried that.  The best odds for the underdog are to force an unusual style of play and avoid the predictable defeat.  Unpredictable could be a win or a loss.
