If Robb was truly honorable, he would've wed and bed Roslin at the Twins before his campaign

THB, it is more than a bit weird that he didn't do that. Not sure if I'd call it more "honorable" just seems more practical than anything. Walder really should have pushed for it , saying that: "fancy weddings are for southern fops that fuck their siblings and unjustly beheads nobles." All/most of Robb's Bannermen are there to witness it.

Seems like a plot convenience to make Jeyne+Robb happen later on by GRRM.

Yup GRRM wanted it that way.

The Freys insisting on Robb knocking Roslin up would be their highest priority, so the heir can claim Winterfell.  Because Wars tend to lead to a lot of deaths.

Maybe it could be rationalized by saying that neither Robb nor Walder wanted a rushed shabby wedding. Wouldn't look good for The King in The North and Walder seems a bit "sensitive" about slights, like a less than worthy wedding ceremony.

An impromptu wedding event just to seal the alliance would've been something both sides would agreed upon IMO. Just like Jon and Ned double wedding at Riverrun.

Why bed her at Twins? He could do that in Riverrun or Westerlands.

And/Or bring her along until she is officially impregnated (I heard shes super fertile) and send her back.

But spend some time on drawing up a will instead....

Not to put too fine a point on it, but they really should have gotten their [insert metaphor for sex here] ASAP. Babies are what makes marriage-pact work and delaying that by going anywhere but maybe Riverrun is a big risk, as we see with the RW being a direct result of Rosling not [insert metaphor for sex here]'ing Robb all night long.

IF Robb was honorable, but we know Robb is not an honorable fellow.  Walder Frey assumed Robb was honorable and didn't ask for payment ahead of services.  I guess the old man didn't think anybody would swear an oath and then break it.

There are benefits for Walker too in delaying. The most immediate threat to Tobb is the upcoming battle of Riverrun. By holding off on marriage and pregnancy, Walker avoids tying himself as closely to Robb’s cause. So had Rob lost the battle, his daughter is not “spoiled goods” and he can quickly jump ship and beg Tywin’s forgiveness. Which is harder to do if your daughter/granddaughter carries Robb’s heir.

A marriage post-Riverrun would really make a lot of sense though. Robb has just won two great victories and upgraded from Lord to King in the process. That was likely the most opportune moment for Walker to demand the marriage be honoured

He's already done that by allowing him access to his bridge and sending his army with Robb. A marriage to the current son of the Lord of the North is not going to change anything, and all the better for Walder if Robb marries and impregnates a Frey and still gets punished as Walder would be in possession of the heir of the North.

He has no problem with Roslyn being 'spoiled'. He has a lot of unmarried female descendants, one being married into House Stark is not going to be a problem.

Tywin himself has a cousin who is married to the current Lord Peake, a House that fell from grace not too long ago. That marriage has not damaged the Lannisters.

How is it harder?

And it should be noted that neither Walder or Robb knew that Ned would be executed, that Stannis and Renly would crown themselves, or that Robb would and the war would last for more than a year.

Initially it was all about quickly getting to Riverrun (the actual reason why there was no wedding, time was of a huge importance) before it fell and hopefully capturing a high profile prisoner to exchange for Ned.

Once Robb has crossed and crowned himself Walder is in no position to demand anything.

It’s a plot hole plain and simple.

How is it a plot hole?

Catelyn would gladly have spitted the querulous old man and roasted him over a fire, but she had only till evenfall to open the bridge. Calmly, she said, "All the more reason that we must reach Riverrun, and soon. Where can we go to talk, my lord?"

Cat was in a rush, they were not going to rush a wedding in hours, which would further make the Freys look small time. Robb would want time to pick his bride (and it may even be that not all the possible Frey brides were present) and Walder would want a feast to celebrate this union.

Well, she is just a Frey.

Sorry, just testing the waters after reading the thread title + the two opening posts.  :D

I agree with the notion that he didn't marry her at the Twins because GRRM was already planning to have Robb violate his treaty and oath when the Northern army crossed the Green Fork of the Trident.

How much preparation was put into Catelyn’s marriage to Ned?

Yeah, or Roslin could have been brought along to Riverrun if time was that much of an issue. Heck bring along several girl if Robb wants to have a pick. Not having a fancy wedding during wartime isn't something Cat or Ned ever gets any guff about or seems to care much about.

 First of he seems to have gotten the fosterings and Olywars position as squier right away.  Second we aren't given any explicit reasons in-text why the marriage didn't happen so assuming it has to do with Robb lack of honor is baseless.

That's a bit different. Prior Robert's Rebellion, Riverrun was already prepared for a grand wedding (Cat&Brandon). So they had it, only a few months later, and with two couples instead of one. While Freys were totally unprepared to held an immediate wedding.

I don't think, that the marriage not happening immediately, was just a plot hole, or it happened that way, only because GRRM planned for Robb to break his promise. Reasons:

  1. Freys were unprepared to held a wedding;
  2. maybe they didn't even had a septon in their castle at that time;
  3. also Robb and his troops were in a hurry to get to Riverrun;
  4. and most likely Walder wanted to invite lords of Riverlands, to brag to them about his accomplishment, he wanted them to be present on the wedding, and see his triumph;
  5. most likely, not all of Walder's daughters and grandaughters of marritable age were present at the Twins, so they all needed time to gather there;
  6. as other people has mentioned above, it was too risky for Walder to marry one of Freys to a rebel. Because if Robb would have lost in a war to Lannisters, then Walder and his entire family would have been accused in conspiracy with Starks. Though, as long as the wedding didn't happened, he can claim, that he was unaware of what was happening between Starks and Lannisters. That he was just minding his own business, and his family. That he's just an old man, and he doesn't deal anymore with politics and stuff like that. So when Cat Tully, daughter of his liege lord, came to the Twins, and asked Walder to let her people thru, he did it without knowing, that they were going into war against Lannisters and Crown.
