I'm with you on that. It felt like the tightest story in terms of pace and theme as well but maybe the war genre lends itself to that?

Being set over three days probably does help with the pacing. What I liked most about was that despite a lot of it being about the battle it still had good character development.

I guess it depends on the technology and people. Bayaz could arguably push things forward at a higher rate than our world.  And it does seem like the old empire could provide forgotten tech that speeds things up.

Adrian Tchaikovsky did a great accelerated industrial revolution in his shadows of the apt series that felt natural as opposed to forced despite them going from crossbows to planes in a decade.

The key thing is being able to keep the setting recognisable despite the changes. The "les mis" comparison does suggest a tech level similar to what you suggest eg cannons and muskets that require reloading and the bayonet/cavalry still being essential.

I'm still not entirely convinced about the plausibility of the pace of Tchaikovsky's technological development, but it's definitely fun to read.

I still don’t understand the concept of people reading the books out of order?!!? :bang:

Its even in the first post in this topic!!!

:leaving:

The bookstore only had The Heroes in stock at the time! What was I supposed to do? Not buy a book?

Edit: After thinking about it a bit, there's another situation where I might end end up reading a book out of order. And that is by going to a bookstore with no set series in mind to get. Just going to browse and seeing if anything catches my interest. That is how I ended up buying the first book of the Rain Wild Chronicles without having heard of or read any of the Fitz books previously.

At this stage i accept it as some form of curse/comedy. Maybe I've just been fortunate in my fantasy reading as i rarely find myself having to ask what order beyond publication date i need to read a fantasy series in. Narnia is the only one that springs to mind and i've heard the malazan books can be tricky.

Maybe joe's publishers need to add numbers to the books? It could help with sales as their may be a demographic of reader out there who considers buying the book only to be overwhelmed by the fear/possibility they might be reading it out of order.

War. Politics. Revolution.
The Age of Madness has arrived...

The chimneys of industry rise over Adua and the world seethes with new opportunities. But old scores run deep as ever.

On the blood-soaked borders of Angland, Leo dan Brock struggles to win fame on the battlefield, and defeat the marauding armies of Stour Nightfall. He hopes for help from the crown. But King Jezal's son, the feckless Prince Orso, is a man who specialises in disappointments.

Savine dan Glokta - socialite, investor, and daughter of the most feared man in the Union - plans to claw her way to the top of the slag-heap of society by any means necessary. But the slums boil over with a rage that all the money in the world cannot control.

The age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die. With the help of the mad hillwoman Isern-i-Phail, Rikke struggles to control the blessing, or the curse, of the Long Eye. Glimpsing the future is one thing, but with the guiding hand of the First of the Magi still pulling the strings, changing it will be quite another...

Joe is reavealing some more info in his site.

Combining what he reveals now and what we knew from previous POVs, we have that the seven POVs from the books will be:

  1. Leo dan Brock (Lord Brock's daughter son, 21)
  2. Savine dan Glokta (Glokta's daughter, late 20s)
  3. Prince Orso (Jedzal's son, late 20s)
  4. Rikke (the Dogman's daughter, 21)

The other three POVs are two men and a woman, older (from early 30s to late 40s), and one of them is child of a previously seen character.

Daughter or son?

Very intriguing. Which is better for an ambitious woman, being the bastard of a puppet king or the legitimate daughter of the real power in the land?

A real ambitious woman that believed herself to be the legitimate bastard of the real power in the land would try to convince his father to marry him to the crown prince Orso. When his father unexplicably fails to do so without giving her any explanation, she'll probably want to take matters into her own hands...

Abercrombie does incest? I'm a little scared.

So is that one supposed to be Isern? I think she fits the bill.
