Ah, old man ... now you are making me feel old too!

I see your dryer and I raise you my clothes horse, which is way more energy efficient and therefore better for the environment.

I think it's useful to be aware of one's own mortality. Makes you get shit done while you still can .

I'm not an environmentalist. We should protect the environment only in the sense of efficiency and realistic longevity, not try to handicap ourselves for minimum effect and vague outcomes . Like these stupid plastic straw and bag laws that are getting passed around . Straws make up 0.6 of all plastic waste in the seas , eliminating them will do nothing but inconvenience the people , the real big source of plastic in the ocean is fishing nets that are left there but you can't get a photo of an industrial fishing net up a turtle's nose to trend on facebook or twitter so ... not to mention that most plastic waste other than nets makes it to the ocean via rivers and almost all of that waste flows through 10 major rivers , 8 of which are in Asia yet I don't see anyone saying we should pressure the Chinese and Indians , instead it's Walmart or Tesco that are evil and ruining the environment . But hey Damned sanctimonious self-righteous moralising busy bodies saw a sad turtle on facebook . /rant

Sorry about that ...:bang:

That's just the concept of efficiency . Nothing to do with being millennial. No one wants to put in extra effort for no return . I think your sister's attitude is reflective of why so many young people these days seem to think socialism is wonderful.

Yep, I am a believer in the Austria/Chicago school of economics and the teachings of Friedrich Hayek . Which is to say low taxes , minimum regulation, low federal budget and overall saving and investment . From the looks of it you are as well , welcome to the club sister

We have had our fair share of socialism and while the idea is noble, like everything else, it gets corrupted when put into practice. Being a fan of socialism skipped a generation, but the Millennials who don’t  remember having two flavors of ice cream and seeing bananas in stores only for Christmas are of course inclined to only see the nobility of the idea. My parents’ generation is a blind fan of capitalism in turn.

Just because throwing lightning through the airwaves to come out your side hasn’t been shown on film, doesn’t mean it isn’t possible, after all the Dark Side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider unnatural.

My Little apprentice is good, she’s not been great with the heat, it’s woken her up more often, but the last few days haven’t been as hot, and now they’re getting hot again thankfully our air conditioning has now been installed and wow it’s powerful, I’ve had to set it  low, if you turn it up too high it feels like an ice box!.

Yeah, like growing robotic spiderlegs and vital organs to a torso stump? Clone wars just reached a whole new level of weird.

My aircon doesn’t work and there’s no way I can get it fixed before I leave for my vacation. Sad times. Glad to hear mini sith doesn’t suffer from the heat. Though... as a dragon, I’m sure she loves her bath scalding hot too and cannot be killed by fire. If you feel like she is old enough I’ll gladly babysit and have her practice blasting lightning at drunk college students who sing under my window. It’ll be fun!

So you know that thing when a thread comes loose in your underwear and gets wrapped round your gentleman's sausage, and it feels like a garrote and you can't take your pants off without scissors? Yeah that sucks.

In non my undergarments news: The Edinburgh festival is starting and I'm already fed up with the people everywhere.

Who said anything about handicapping ourselves? Seriously, not getting a straw inconveniences exactly nobody. Everybody can drink out of a glass or bottle. I agree that this is just a small part of the damage to the environment humanity is causing, but if we can eliminate even that small part, then we should. But I also think more should be done about the environment altogether (and I don't just mean in USA and Europe).

I’m sorry about your kitties. It’s so hard when they’ve been part of the family for so long. I only have one left that is 17 and has kidney failure as well. He’s hanging on though.

Congrats for Mrs. chicken!

I havent seen sniffer but I’m rarely on here. I really do miss the old crew. I’m so glad you dropped in!

Lady O, it's nice to see you here as well on fb. Congrats again on the birth of your lovely baby daughter.

Yeah, it's good for Steve to ride, as much as it scares me with all the people texting and driving these days.

I guess I should send Sniffer a message on fb - I miss him, he's such a character!

I’m really glad things are going well on the family front. Sorry about the cats though. Are you planning on getting new kittens at some point? Or maybe a cute puppy? (Dog person alert!) Puppies are cuter anyway, it is known.

Hi Rhaenys!

Great to see you and so many names I recognize still here. I was afraid I wouldn't know anyone.

I will try to check in more frequently in future. It was sad to see the cats go, but there will be no more for us. They tend to live too long. And we're not dog people. I love dogs in small doses. Like on visits. My father in law has two and I enjoyed seeing them and seeing how much he loves them and they him. It's a beautiful relationship for them, but it's not for me.

Buckwheat!

So nice to see you. Hope things are going well. Have you found work in your field? Are you a professor?

Does it feel strange to see a native of your country in the White House of America? Or maybe you're used to it by now?

Very nice to see you again HC :) Sounds like things are good at Casa Chicken. Awesome news about chicken and her bf, and I'm glad your wife is happier in her new job. Sad news about your cats, I'm sorry :(

Sniffer checks in from time to time, plays Pictionary. His niece might be able to help you though. @She who must be Obeyed

quick rundown of the latest here that springs to mind.

Lord Sidious gave birth to the future supreme ruler of the galaxy. A fine young Sith apprentice indeed she is turning out to be.

In further Baby news, LadyO has also added a new rose to the garden :) Now the dragon truly has three heads - Koba (wonder how she is?) Sidious and It's three children.

Buck is currently no longer in a postage stamp of a country and generally showing the world her smarts.

lany checks in once in a while, is very busy with work, which from what I can tell is going well. Alex is no longer the youngling he was when I joined. This feels weird.

Rhae recently had the sister visit. For a full rundown go back a few pages

Hi Helena!

Thanks for the run down. I am on facebook with a bunch of Westeros/TTTNE friends which has contributed to my laziness in getting back here.

Sniffer is one of the people I'm friends with and he used to post regularly on Fragile Bird's page - but I have not seen him there or elsewhere for some months. I do see our old friend Zar from time to time, Eira has been a little less on fb lately. Gillio I see fairly regularly (she likes to post bad puns ;)  ) and Lany too. There are several others, but I have gotten so used to seeing them as fb friends I forget about the Westeros connection.

OH! I see Cora a couple times a year, and Q as well - she's married now, I believe.

You are still at university in London - do i have that right? You must be close to join the legal profession?

My brother completed his year of working in London, came home and retired a few months later. His London stay helped him expand his already mammoth record collection.

See you around!

I actually disagree that the idea is noble at all , it's actually inherently evil. Just because 2 thirds of the people in a room vote that the remaining third has too much money and beat them up and take their money doesn't mean that they're not thugs who just stole someone else's labor . Income inequality is NOT an issue , POVERTY is an issue . The idea that wealth is some finite commodity that the wealthy are stealing from the poor is just wrong . If you are getting by and you're not poor or starving then why do you care that someone else is earning millions ? Or are you simply envious and covetous of what they have ? George Orwell comes to mind "they don't care about the poor , they just hate the rich ." And if you are poor and don't have any money then how would the rich be stealing from you if you don't have any money for them to "steal" ?  There will always be inequality in life simply because people have different abilities and a small percentage will always far outperform the rest , it's called the Pareto principal or the 80/20 rule where 80% of the effects come from 20 % of the causes . It is observable everywhere from nature to programming. The real issue that has to be fought is poverty where we should help people who are at the bottom and can't maintain themselves, I believe we can do that through utilizing negative tax reform for the poor and supporting local communal charities . I am 100 % against the welfare state .

My mother and her family were lucky , my grandmother escaped east Berlin (after being raped by Soviet soldiers ...) to Bonn where she started a family with my grandfather and had my mother but many members of her family got stuck back east and got to experience the wonders of socialism , one of my great uncles even won the grand prize of a long vacation to lovely Siberia and its' famous political correction facilities.

Here's the moral argument :The road to tyranny is paved with kindness and compassion . It is not the state's business to decide if I can use a straw or not . Just because you're okay with not using a straw and are fine with a glass or bottle doesn't mean you get to dictate what other people do . It is principle. And here's the practical argument:  no , reducing 0.6% (not 6%) of the issue is negligible , as in has no effect on the environment whatsoever, you should keep the concept of diminishing returns in mind as well. Somewhat anecdotal stuff for added flavor :As for handicapping ourselves, that would be in the energy department , California citizens are being asked not to turn on their lights or appliances in the day because of the voltage load from cooling the recent heatwave. Source of annoyance for me as a scientist: We've also stopped serious research into nuclear energy which is simply absurd , it is one of greatest achievements of the human race and we are not trying to advance it (it has issues but we've stopped serious research into solving these issues because we're shamed by "kind" people )

My point in mentioning the US and Europe is that this public outrage and cry for reform is aimed at the west instead of the actual unchecked and unregulated boogieman which is China and India . Like seriously do you think your shopping bags are what's ruining the environment ? It's unchecked industrialized operations like mass fishing that are ruining oceans . Don't be swayed by simple knee jerk emotional arguments that don't actually hold water just because they feel good . Look up issues and study the numbers . /rant-argument.

Oh please, on a scale of 1 to 10, how much of an inconvenience is it for you to use either re-usable or recyclable straws and shopping bags?

But sure, let's keep feeding the garbage patches covering the oceans that already contain every discarded piece of plastic that was produced in the last 50 years. Microplastic is ubiquitous, poisoing species and finding its way into the food chain. Even if the amount contributed by straws and bags is rather small, banning or limiting them is a first step into the right direction and the consumer awareness generated around the issue is certainly a non-negligible factor. If your house is on fire, your problem won't be solved by pouring more gasoline on it.

And who is the West to tell the oh so evil boogieman developing countries in the aftermath of colonialism what to do while they struggle with poverty, hunger, lack of education and basic human rights enforcement? The whole idea of sustainability is based on a synergy of environmental protection, economic development and social factors and it can't really be achieved if one of the components is missing, so of course developing countries have their priorities elsewhere. It's clear that they can't drive forward a process of industrialisation that is as heedless as the one that got the West to where it's at today and that the current state of science has to be respected. The West in turn is obligated to put more scientific and financial resources into environmental protection and damage control, it's called the principle of common but differentiated responsiblities and is implemented in many mechanisms of environmental conventions, the Paris Agreement and the Kyoto Protocol being the most prominent.

Of course reality differs a lot from these nice sounding moral arguments, but progress is being made even if it's in small steps. Since we're already running towards resource depletion and the era of climate change, I'd say that any effort counts.

I think some lightning practice would do her a lot of good when she’s big enough.

With the environment I think doing common sense stuff like recycling is a good idea, we always do it, but at the same time I’m not about to start wearing natural clothing or anything like that, although I am currently considering buying a hybrid car .

I actually am not sure about my parents. But my grandfather is still very keen on socialism, as far as I know. He remembers it as "the good old times" and ... TBH, idealises it a bit (or a lot), as humans are prone to do with anything to do with the past.

@Vin, don't want to go into prolonged debates, but lets just say that we have some very different opinions about what the state's job is and isn't.

Also everything @Nazca Barsavi said. If one does not think even a little about how one's actions are impacting the environment, that is just selfish.
