You are right, good point. I should have said the vast majority of people. And for these people with disabilities, I am sure a solution can be reached.

As long as this hypothetical new solution is reached before they take away the current solution!

Because history clearly shows that governments have never turned tyrannical ,right? Why worry about anything at all ? Just submit to your new lord and Savior and let daddy and his executive branch deal with everything .*wink* *wink*

On a side note, religious exemptions are mostly silly .

Not much of an argument really , just an off shoot of the basic small government vs big government debate which is a never ending classic because both sides firmly believe they're correct .

The fact that you're making this argument about regulations on the material that drinking straws are made from really demonstrates how absurd this whole argument is.

I do get it though, I used to think similarly when I was a kid, but the real world isn't so black and white.

@RhaenysBeeLol , this isn't dedication . Not even close . This just some fun ribbing while I wait for the run time on my CNN between trials .

The Italian movie ? I think watched it but that was last year . If it is then I agree it's quite interesting .

You can even hand down the rest of your supply to your children and grandchildren. Within a few generations plastic straws will be a rare and terribly expensive antiquity, I'm sure there's a fortune to be made (unless our supreme leaders have criminalised possession of and dealing with plastic straws by then.)

But then the government will issue an inheritance tax and take half your straws :P

54 minutes ago, felice said:

That's not actually true, as I've recently discovered. People with a wide range of disabilities (not all of them visible to a casual observer) depend on them, and the alternatives to disposable plastic aren't viable for a lot of those people (eg the more rigid types like metal pose an injury risk to people with impaired coordination). By all means avoid using straws if you don't need them, but keep them available in public eateries and don't judge people who do use them - they might have good reason even if it's not obvious to you.

I visited it for a few hours last millenium; seemed like a nice place, but I was just a kid and not there for long. The festival sounds like it would be great fun.

This is basically what I'm arguing ,raise awareness but let people make their own choices . That's why I really like the German green dot program .

Don't want to really engage in detail, but ... did you just call laws regulating the use of plastic straws tyranny?

What about these pesky rules and regulations saying you should not drive in the opposite direction to everybody else on a highway, is that tyranny too?

No, I am trying to research. I mean, teaching goes with that, I want to teach uni students. Which is not what people usually mean when talking of teaching.

I am going to say we are not going to do that, because we live in different countries and are never going to go to the same election.

I am pretty sure this holds true to any possible form of government and society in the history. I don't think this is especially true for socialism.

The country that my country was once a part of did not have anything to do with the Kremlin since like the 50s. Socialism =/= Sovjet Union.

I am pretty sure the word is "dissidents". ;)

Here too. My parents' generation did not have problems, for example, travelling anywhere. It was far from the early Sovjet era in SSSR.

What is it about?
When I get home, I am going to go watch Mamma Mia. There, I said it, I have weird taste in movies.

Of course , straws are an unalienable human right ! Didn't you know ? (On a personal less silly note , I don't wanna give the government any power over me that I don't really have to ,but that's just me .ironic because I have worked on a couple of research projects for the government)

I'm not an anarchist . Don't paint me like one please :P

Well can't you apply to companies to conduct research privately? I mean that's what I do . There are plenty of great research and development departments and initiatives outside of universities . It's convenient for me because I do not want to teach .

Well it's a hypothetical cup of coffee but damn that's cold

I guess . an individual perspective study is always good to consider . But I would posit that the socialists were a tad bit stringent ,don't you think ?

Okay, but I never specified your country and if I did then I'd be wrong but to think any country within the iron curtain didn't answer to Moscow at some capacity is unrealistic imo . They were funded by Moscow and the whole reason the union fell was because Moscow could no longer fund these failed economies imo .

Sorry , phone tricked me ! I submit an Alford plea .

It's good that your family didn't have to suffer under socialism , I wish this was the case for everyone.

My mother has an unhealthy obsession with abba and plays them at Christmas . Mamma Mia is bad news !

I know I made this argument look like a think tank paper with the statistical analysis and the philosophical questions but it was mostly just a little bit of fun. This is definitely not a hill I'm willing to die on. An example of a hill I'm willing to die on is the 2nd amendment.

I'm not exactly a kid...but I get your point. There's no real overarching "big" or "small" government .there are areas of life that by their nature and scope necessitate a "big" government approach and involvement while others don't and a low level nuanced analysis of these individual areas and the risks and stakes involved in them determines the level of the government's involvement. However I still believe that most of those areas do not require substantial government intervention and I err on the side of individual freedom. Black and white would be true if I was an anarchist , which I'm not .

After a few years away, I'm surprised to see so many familiar names - which is nice, actually. Good to see so many of you staying in touch here.

Around our chicken coop, things have changed somewhat. The chickee and her bf have their own house. Mrs. Chicken got a new job a couple years ago and is much happier than she was in the old one. I will reach social security age this year but keep working as that increases benefits when I do stop. My brother just visited from his home in California and he just about hiked me to death. He's been riding his bike 40 miles, three or four times a week.

Oh, sad news - we have no cats now. They both died of kidney failure, Friskey at 18 and Shadows at 17 years of age. I miss them both, but the house does smell better.

Does rock Sniffer ever check in? We're fb friends, but I have not seen a post from him in forever.

Congrats for Mrs. chicken!

Yeah, I replace them myself, it's just annoying because they come in packs of 6(they have 6 strings and they're all slightly different thickness depending on which string it is) so now I have to break open another pack to just replace one, no big deal, just I should know better after doing it for so long :P.

Oh that sounds good. I thought you had to take it somewhere to have the string replaced or something. I’m sorry about the annoyance though, sometimes we screw up the most obvious tasks, it happens to everyone.

Sorry about your air con. Here is it also too hot to sleep. And the bed is not comfortable and I don't feel much at home. I don't sleep well here.

Yup, that’s where the discussion lost me too.

Same applied for my grandparents here. They bought a car, they built two houses, they traveled abroad basically every year once my mother was old enough until she was a young adult and started her own life, etc. They were lucky to never be affected by the terror side of the ussr.

It’s about a creepy man in a cafe who makes people’s wishes come true. The catch is, obviously, that they have to do something horrible to get their wish fulfilled. There’s a happy end which takes away from the artsy edge of the movie, but I thought it was still a solid 8.5-9 out of 10.

Ah, I’m sorry. When are you traveling home?

So I got an Almost full 7 hours of sleep. Not sure when I went to bed exactly, it was around midnight, and then constructions workers started “conversing” under my window around 6:50ish and I gave up snoozing around 7:30...

IDK what you mean by that.

I mean, you did mention the Kremlin ... and no, you have some of your history facts wrong.

It is kind of an issue for me and probably other people from postage stamp-sized countries. You always get mixed up with some othet country by foreigners. It gets really annoying.

I agree. I also wish no family would suffer under capitalism, feudalism, or in a hunter-gatherer society. I am sad that this is not and was not the case.

No changing strings is really basic stuff, anyone who has played for more than a few months should be able to do it, and if they haven’t learned they’re being lazy, I change mine on the guitars I play the most at least once a month.

It’s so easy to make mistakes doing the most basic things though, especially when you always have to have one eye or ear on mini Sith.

Have you got much planned for the weekend?, we are heading down towards the seaside for the day to visit a friend soon, just getting the car packed now!.

As someone from a post socialist stamp sized country, I can absolutely agree. It doesn’t necessarily annoy me, but it’s kinda ironic.

And with that, you won this discussion.

Oh no, I’m sorry that you can’t sleep well in your current accommodation. I’m sure mamma Mia will be great if you like this kinda movies.

Oh I see. As I said, I never played the guitar. And well, mini sith is an adorable reason to have your attention split.

I should do so much but I’m really tired. I will probably pull myself together and get some groceries and start being useful soon.

Yeah ... after I last posted about it, he showed up at my door the next morning. I told him to keep distance and he seemed to understand it. I started talking to him again some days later (judge me for that, but he is literally the only person I know here socially. I would go crazy if I could not talk to anybody.) and we just chatted about smalltalkish stuff a few times since then. Yesterday we grabbed an ice cream together.

Then this morning I get an email from him saying how he would cry if he had to see me and say goodbye before I go back home, and that he learned from me that we have to control OUR feelings ... like, whaaaaat. FFS. Seriously, dude, we talked a few times, went for a walk in the city, grabbed ice cream and played some games like the hangman and juggling together. We did not even really talk personal stuff. The hell is the drama about.

If somebody can read the situation better than me, please share by all means. Cause I just have no idea. I think I could have told if somebody just wanted me to sleep with him, and I am pretty sure ... that's not it. And it is not some deep feelings either, cause ... well, we seriously don't even know each other that well.

I could not restrain myself and I sent him back an email that could be read as a tiny bit of snarky. But I did add a few smileys!

Lil lady O is now 7 weeks and I swear she is teething and when I put her on her tummy she nearly crawls :o She’s already quite fiesty as well. And so much bigger than Lil O was at this stage.

I stopped ready all the back back and forth after I read plastic straws. I dunno, I personally really like the paper straws and wish all the beverages were in glass bottles like they used to be. I also wish milk was delivered to my door step in glass jugs as well. Not even for environmental reasons but for the fact that plastic has chemicals and I prefer my beverages in glass but it’s too expensive here for us. Maybe I’ll start up my own milk delivery company some day.

Maybe. He later blamed the misunderstanding on cultural differences. I posted about it in GenChat to get some perspective from other boarders.

ETA: Also, I don't think trust and commitment issues have anything to do with it.
