At what age did you move out of your parents house

Moved out for college, moved back in with my mother. I could move out at just about any time, but I'm helping her financially for a while so she can get on more sure footing (she went through a rough patch of employment for a few years and would have lost the house without my help). I'm also taking classes, trying to earn more money so I can help her while affording a place of my own.

Went to college at 18. Was 21 after graduation and moved back in...didn't move out permanantly until 25 when my brother and I got a place after our younger sister got a place of her own after she graduated and we didn't want to be "those guys" anymore...

Moved back in at 30 with my then fiance for a few months prior to, and then after the wedding. We were putting together the where withal to buy that first house...haven't been back since...but we have a great relationship with my folks...

18 to go to uni, but I still go back in the summers. I’m renting a house with my girlfriend and another friend from August though after I graduate (aged 22) and I don’t see myself going back unless out of necessity. My older brother still lives with them (he’s nearly 24), but has a somewhat decent job now and will be moving out soon.

My parents don’t mind having us home, but have said that they definitely want us to move out and be financially independent by the time we’re 25, which I think is perfectly fair.

They probably think you should know how frustrated they’ve been that they can’t have sex as Loud as they want

Was this thread created because of this?

30 year old guy kicked out of his parents house. Judge sides with parents.

Because that dude is the worst.

I am pretty sure it was. I have been following this all week. He is the worst.

Yep.  That guy is long past needing to get the hell out.

Doesn't even do household chores, or seem to pay anything, or even work part time. I mean...we don't know everything, and the parents aren't blameless as they raised him that way, arguably. BUT he is a 30 year old man and seems totally lazy. Just sheer laziness.

33. :p

I built it together with them though(it is only 10 years old) and I got my own living area(with kitchen and bathroom).

Living on your own is not really a thing people in my familiy do though. I grew up together with cousins and uncles/aunts on my grandfathers farm.

Around here a lot of people move back in with their parents after living on their own for a few years as expanding a house tends to be cheaper than starting from scratch.

At this point I'm kind of resigned to never owning a home.  I'm kind of shocked that there aren't more blue collar socialists out there given that I've met many others in similar situations.

Owning a home isn't all it's made out to be.  TBH, it requires a significant, ongoing financial investment to keep it up.  Taxes are horrendous if you're in a nice area, generally.  And lords help you if you get a bad neighbor.  I mean, have you even watched "Fear Thy Neighbor"???!

I'd rather be footloose and fancy-free and able to pick up and leave when I want to.

ETA: Oh, and 27.  :D

Around '00, at 16, because a 1+ hour bus ride to school was making me miserable. Though my parents' house remained my officially registered address for the next 14 years or so, during which time I called 11 different apartments in 9 different cities home. Though this is a simplified version of events.

Left at 17 to go to college, though I was back at parents' for the summers. I moved out for good at 21, when I started grad school.

Was Buffalo your undergrad or graduate program?

Hmm... my kids are 5 and not quite 3 and do some chores. Not, like, super well or anything. But they do them. Mostly just to make the habit of it.

I went to college at 18 but moved back in when I failed out at 20. Then moved out for good at 23. Those 3 in between years was quite the challenge with the parents, and when I finally got a decent job I got the hell out of there immediately. It’s amazing how good my relationship with my parents got once I did leave though. Just yesterday I went to see Solo with my dad. That would’ve been unheard of in my younger days.

I recently purchased my first condo and having a bad neighbor is one of my biggest fears. There is just no escape.

Also the mortgage process has also been such a blast too! What a clusterfuck. They check everything. I cannot wait until I’m done with all of this shit and just get in there.

This is impressive to me, you should be proud of yourself for the character you exhibit with those choices.

Ignoring the technicalities: Never.

With the technicalities... Well, I did kinda left my parents' home when I was 19 and have rented a flat closer to university. But I was only alone for a week or so until my mother moved in. When looking for the flat, it was just at the beginning of a messy mud-slinging divorce that would accompany my entire studies and it was already clear that my mother couldn't afford the house on her own after my father fled to his affair and tried to weasel his way out of alimony. So it was a rather clear case that we would have to live together to support each other financially, even though I'm fairly sure I've lost several years of my life due to the constant stress.

Now I've just turned 25, have finished my Master's degree, but still have to go through 1,5 years of teacher training until properly getting sworn in and getting more than the current starvation wage. After all, I would have to be able to finance moving out in these times of cut-throat rents and being able to still support my mother from afar both at once, but right now it is just enough for one household. I really would have liked to stand on my own feet earlier, but the monetary concerns stare me down at every corner.

Depends who you ask, and what qualifies.

Ask me, and I'd say 19, heading to Uni, and only returning for the odd week or two in the holidays.

Ask Dad, and he'd say 27, graduating and getting a long-term place of my own.

Ask Mum, and despite moving house herself, she keeps a room for me, and insists that the last 23 years are just a blip, and that I still live with her.

Others would probably say 13 when I started boarding school and spent more than 50% of my nights elsewhere.
