SOLO: A Spoiler Story (contains spoilers)

That is a valid point. Thx!

But lists of all-time best movies and the like exist. Heck, we do them regularly and we rate it in categories and outside. If a 7/10 should be able to hold water it must have some standards, however wide or narrow. Empire should very often make the top of the list. Not always, depending on the standards. But very often! Solo is so far off, even if the comparison lacks a bit, bc you can make the case that Solo is in a different kind of category, like a heist or a thief movie, the best reference point is the SW theme and universe and characters. Empire is just too far away from Solo on nearly every level, that giving it a rating in its vicinity is very curious.

But, as long as the criteria for ratings isn't disclosed, we can talk oranges and tomatoes here.

Because people typically don't grade all the movies ever made on the same scale. And people have preferences in terms of what they typically watch. For example, I don't give a shit about Godfather, because I don't care for those type of movies, therefore all Star Wars movies would rank higher than it.

Exactly this point. All art is subjective, anything someone likes is subjective really. I love ketchup on a hotdog as an adult, but most would say it's vile. Does that mean my likes are not valid? If I think the movie is a 7/10 and Inception was a 5/10 then that's the end of that. No amount of telling me I am wrong or critics saying it is going to make it different. Most of those same critics loved some pretty shitty movies!

I mean, how can someone give this sorry excuse of a movie 7/10 points if movies like the Godfather or Inception or Heat (both latter ones being heist movies of sorts) garner universally 9 or 10 points of 10. That would be only 2 or 3 points off - and that lets me ... uhm ... flabbergasted.

The best SW movie, The Empire strikes back is on my book a 7, barely. And I like SW, I am a genuine fan, but realize that even if you lower the standards of Sci-fi or fantasy movies by 2, it would be a 9/10. This movie is the heart and soul of SW. But giving Solo the same points is just way too much.

It is a 4, within Sci-Fi a 5 or 6 - maybe.

Well, my own scale is as follows:

0 - the worst film ever made

1 - diabolical. Truly fucking terrible

2 - so bad it made me angry

3 - solidly bad thoughout, but not offensive like a 2

4 - quite bad, but with moments of good

5 - equally good and bad. Meh.

6 - quite good but with some notable flaws

7 - solidly good, but nothing special

8 - very good and highly enjoyable

9 - one of the Greats

10 - the best film ever made

So according to this scale, Solo is a fairly comfortable 7 for me. It gets judged on my own experience, not on how “close” it is to other, better films. For that you’d need a much bigger scale.

Edit: added a 0 and changed 1. My scale was lop-sided!

Good scale! Then the variance lies in the first and last 3 steps. They are huge. But thx! Enlightens your scoring!

Well sure, and I often can’t decide to give a film a 7 or 8 (TFA, for example). It’s just an unavoidable problem with a small numerical scale.

Based on the SENP scale I would say Solo was a 7 as well. Of the new ones...

TFA - an emotional 8, more likely a 7. It was the first with the characters I knew so it gets a bump.

Rogue 1 - Solid 8 for me. After seeing this I was very happy, I have seen it around 4 times total so far. If the SENP scale allows for decimals this would be 8.7 or so for me.

TLJ  - 7. I loved it visually. If they had deleted the whole casino heist it would be an 8. If the deleted the casino heist and let Leia die in space, let her hang out there on screen dying for us all to feel,(since she died IRL before it was released) it may have been 8.5 - 8.9 because her death would have been so emotional and would have felt real.

Solo - 7  The big reveal at the end almost drops this to a 6 for me but I hadn't known about the animated series. Once I learned about that I had to let it go.

For the record:

ANH: 9

ESB: 10

RotJ: 7

TPM: 3

AotC: 2

RotS: 3

TFA: 8

TLJ: 8

R1: 6

Solo: 7

Pretty similar. I'd have ROtS as a 4-5 but the rest are right in line with my thoughts, within a point. Curiosity, what drives your R1 down?

Clicked on this page of the thread and all the "letters: numbers" made me think I was looking at data.  Don't scare me like that!  Anywho, I'll play this game, although I'm using @Jace, The Sugarcube's scale (even though I'm pretty sure you don't need to be a 10 to get her there):

ANH: 9

ESB: 9

RotJ: 6

TPM: 2

AotC: 3

RotS: 5

TFA: 7

TLJ: 6

R1: 8

Solo: Oh, right, still haven't seen.  Must be pretty pathetic trolling around a thread for a movie you haven't even seen.

Yay, fun game.

ANH - 6

ESB - 9

RotJ - 7. If I could do half points though I would say 6.5

TPM - 4, and most of that comes from Duel of the Fates

AotC - 0

RotS - 2

TFA - 9

R1 - 8

TLJ - 7, or 8, it varies

Solo - 7 for now, butnive only seem it once so far and it could change

ANH - 9 (note this is contextual, using the term "one of the Greats"; ANH is definitely one of the great Hollywood films because of its influence and importance, but if you just viewed it purely as a film, it's more like a 7)

TESB - 9 (no context needed here, it's genuinely great)

ROTJ - 8 (I like Ewoks more than most.)

TPM - 4

AotC - 3

RotS - 4

TFA - 7

R1 - 8

TLJ - 6

Solo - 6

TRoS - 7.3
