Couldn’t disagree more. Sure GoT has its occasional missteps, but the highs are just so much higher than TLK. At least for me.

Possibly. I haven't watched GoT for 3 seasons so maybe it has improved.

Well, other than season 2 (which did at least have Blackwater) it’s always been really good, imo.

But the later seasons have definitely had some of my favorite episodes:

The Spoils of War (7x04), Battle of the Bastards (6x09), The Winds of Winter (6x10), Hardhome (5x08)

All are far better than anything TLK has ever done, imo. Not trying to put TLK down btw (I do like it a lot), I just think GoT is better.

I agree.

It's the characters for me.  Uhtred is an ever-increasingly compelling and flawed hero to me - better than the books, really, because there I'm comparing him to Derfel from Cornwell's Arthur books and he comes up short.  Alfred is simply amazing.  And Aethelflaed's recent journey from innocence to world-awareness was well done, and lays the foundations for future awesomeness.  Plus it's about the founding of England, so I have a vested interest!

I tend to think that in Civil War his basic argument is right, but he argues it really badly.

I think the pro-registration argument in Civil War is really dumb. They play clips from the climaxes of Avengers, Winter Soldier, and Age of Ultron and are like "ooh people died you guys are loose cannons!" when each of those situations would have been way worse had they not intervened.

Sure you could blame Stark and Banner for Ultron existing, but they were just being scientists there not super-heroes. If Shield or some other government agency had gotten ahold of the mind stone something similar would have happened.

Don't even get me started on Vision's "our strength invites challenge" bullshit. That's probably my least favorite line in the whole MCU. Vision should be smarter than that!

It's Tony's guilt over Ultron that leads him to his position.  It's a shame that Ross was the "oversight" and not someone like Fury - where oversight would have made more sense, and been in more appropriate hands.

War films are mostly depressing and boring and I’d rather read a history book than watch them

Agreed. This makes me a pariah in certain circles, but I think Black Hawk Down is a total snooze-fest, and I've never managed to finish Saving Private Ryan.

The only war-porn screen depiction I really like is Generation Kill, partly because it spends so much time on all human interaction, petty bullshit, banal fuck ups and soul-crushing boredom as much as actual fighting.

The first episode to last episode improvement of spartacus is the greatest in the history of TV.

When it starts off as some of the worst television ever produced, it really doesn't take much.  Got through about 5 ep and just couldn't stomach it anymore.  It's just SOOOOO BAD

Agreed. Never finished either of them. Never tried to watch apocalypse now or platoon either. I’m sure they rely probably all ‘Great Films’ but they’re just...not for me. Don’t appeal to me at all but ive known loads of people who get funny about that Unpopular Opinion :P

I guess in relation to Spartacus, my unpopular opinion is that Spartacus > Rome.

Don't get me wrong, Rome season 1 is excellent, but because season 2 had to be rushed to conclude the Octavian v. Anthony & Cleopatra arc, it suffered greatly, and brought the overall quality down. On the other hand, as has been mentioned, Spartacus continuously improved, ending on a really high note. Possibly one of the best series finale I've seen.

Platoon and Apocalypse Now really are great films - and this is coming from someone that isn’t necessarily a war film fan, either. Platoon is pretty conventional but Apocalypse Now isn’t really like any other war film I’ve seen. I’d definitely recommend both, even for non-war film fans!

Well, Saving Private Ryan may be one of the most overrated movies ever.

I'll tell you what though, I have a bit of a soft-spot for old-school low-budget British war films. Have you ever seen The Cockleshell Heroes? There are two "leader" characters (based on real people); an eccentric, ain't got time for rules maverick, and a straight-laced, by-the-book character. And one of the morals of the story is that the maverick needs to stop fucking about and follow the rules so that the men can learn proper English discipline and get the job done. And then in the end they all face a German firing squad with a stiff upper lip. All based on real events as well, though obviously dramatised.

This thread has reminded me that I really need to finish TLK.

Speed Racer is one of the best movies of all time.  ALL TIME!

My unpopular opinion of the day: While ribs and bacon are great, ham can sometimes be heavily overrated.

I mean tbh I am a historian so I guess I’d rather read a history book than do a lot of things so that kinda loses its weight

It doesn't help that 100% of all war films essentially remove all nuance and intrigue so that they lose all of the interesting parts.

I'm still a big fan of the show, but yours is an opinion I can at least respect. If you go over to the GOT section of these boards, it seems like the loudest voices are people that absolutely hate the show yet they've seen every episode and still watch it religiously.

Spartacus and Rome aren't really comparable though.
