She was meant to sell them to buy an army for her brother, I would assume.

That makes some sense. I have a hard time seeing I & V basing their plan around magical events that have not occured for about 150 years or a Dothraki invasion that would be problematic before, during and after a Targ restoration.

It isn't flawless mind you. For example I have a hard time seeing how Khal Drogo wouldn't find that incredibly insulting.

He knew what he was doing or he had good manners?  It doesn't matter.  Daenerys brought dragons back from extinction and that is all that matters.  Her Targaryen lineage could never be doubted by anyone and that secured her right to inherit Westeros from Viserys, who inherited it from Aerys.  The dragons are the decisive factor that makes her claim superior to any other.

The reason behind this wedding present is not important anymore.  Magister Illyrio and his plans no longer matter.  Dany is the cyvasse player and Illyrio is now only a piece on her game board.  She moves the pieces now.

A simple way to view the eggs is their value.  Viserys attempts to steal them, knowing he could hire a mercenary company to invade Westeros through their sale.  Ilyrio is notably rich, and Viserys is a king (even as a Beggar King).  Ilyrio is presenting gifts to the sister of King Viserys, marrying the greatest living Khal.  Ilyrio's gift must not simply be lavish and/or expensive (like Mace Tyrell's stupid chalice for Joffrey), but also rare and incomparable.  Ilyrio is attempting to be a king-maker, it takes more than just gold to secure a throne (ask Tywin).

Take Jorah's gift at the same wedding:  Books with Westeros history and lore.  They are not of insignificant value, nor lavishly expensive.  They are a tasteful gift, and surprisingly so from an exiled Westerosi knight.  The gift tells a good deal about Jorah, the exiled lord: He's not just a brute, he's educated, mindful of history, and culturally  aware.

The eggs were an appropriate (as a giver) and expected (to please Viserys) sort of gift to give the young Khaleesi.  Ilyrio knows what he's doing.

:agree:

Sometimes, a gift of three valuable stone eggs is just a gift of three valuable stone eggs. Dany even thinks to herself that, though she feels the eggs are beautiful, they probably didn't put Illyrio out much, given how obscenely wealthy he is. It's like if, umm... Mark Zuckerberg gave a really nice house to a relative for their birthday, or something. Ridiculously expensive by anybody else's standards, but affordable to him.

When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone. ASOS - Chapter 25.

Illyrio gave the petrified (stone) eggs to Dany, because he believed she was the prophesized to wake dragons from stone. Illyrio and Varys are working to help bring the prophecy to reality.

Varys had one bad experience with sorcery.  Or so he claims.  One can never tell with him.  He shouldn't have the balls to do this.

Zuck was in the hot seat a few weeks ago.  The Sultan of Brunei gives his daughter her own tropical island for her wedding gift.

Yup it doesn't matter because Dany resurrected the dragons.  The motivation behind the extravagant gift is no longer important except to the fans on this forum.  I don't think we will know any more than we do.  He gave the eggs and Dany brought the dragons back to life.

Religion and sorcery are not the same thing. In Antropology, scientific thinking and magical thinking are considered similar types of thinking because they have rules that can't be violated. For instance, if you perform an experiment and it goes wrong, science says you either did it wrong or your hypothesis was wrong. The rules of the physical universe cannot be violated. If you attempt to perform a spell and it doesn't work, then again you did something wrong since the rules of the magical universe cannot be violated. (Anthropology holds that the difference between scientific and magical thinking are the "authority" sources.) Anthropology says that how religious thought is different is in that the rules of the universe can be broken, i. e. a miracle. GRRM's thinking about magic is muddle by this standard. However, we can safely assume AA is a religious figure since he is someone who is promised to save the world. Therefore, Varys' hatred of sorcery would in no way stop him from seeking the prophecised savior.
