Cricket 33: ODIs Still Aren’t Proper Cricket Edition

England looked in danger of getting 500 before Hales and Morgan got out.

I’m not entirely sure why Australia put England into bat. Without Stokes and Woakes England’s bowling looks potentially slightly vulnerable (no regular death bowlers and Willey’s a bit of a specialist opening bowler) but they haven’t been put under too much pressure in this series.

Haha good banter. That was a great result from England. Australia is at its lowest ebb for 40+ years in this format.

But the real cricket story this week is the Chandimal ban. How dumb does he have to be shine the ball straight after putting something in his mouth post-sandpaper gate? Faf got done for a similar offence a couple of years ago and that was before the recent crackdown. Really poor stuff.

Oh dear...I missed that match. Would've been great to see that record innings.

Australia's ODI side is pretty rubbish and it's not all down to Smith and Warner not being there; Finch and Maxwell are still there for the batting. It's really the bowling that chucks pies all the time. Without Starc we really don't have any consistent wicket-taking ODI bowlers and the rest are all T20 journeymen.

In fairness you’d expect the bowling to get significantly better when Australia bring back in some of the missing players. The bigger concern is how bad the batting has been against spin on some fairly benign pitches.

It almost feels like the England ODI team is more likely to get close to 500 in an innings than the England Test team is.

I never really thought I'd see the day when Scotland is sterner opposition than Australia are. Even when Australia's Test team has had its ups and downs it has always seemed to have a good ODI side, but they seem to have completely lost their way.

That was another enjoyable game, but England never looked under pressure. Australia were at least 50 short.

Letting Root get through 10 over for 44 runs probably didn't help.

Australia definitely looked better with Finch at the top. Not sure what Langer was thinking with him in the middle order.

The ICC has released the full international schedule for the next five years. I haven’t looked through it in detail yet, but I’m bracing myself for disappointment. One strange thing I picked up immediately was that Australia isn’t touring India for a test series until 2022-23.

This England side might be good, but the Australian side is also just really, really crap.

At least the Australian bowlers showed up today, even if their batsmen were still hapless. It was a magnificent innings from Buttler to drag England over the line, there are few things as tense in sport as watching a genuine number 11 batsman like Jake Ball trying to survive an over.

Great game. Buttler for captain.

I think he's a good option for the future, but with England ranked number 1 and having whitewashed Australia I'm not feeling a great need for a change of captaincy at the moment.

Ok, so maybe they aren't totally crap...

Nah. They are.

This series has confirmed what I suspected some time ago: Paine's appointment as ODI captain was a poor one and should be short-lived. He doesn't deserve his place in the team and should be replaced by Finch, who is already the T20I skipper. Carey (the new T20I Vice-Captain) should come in as the full-time ODI 'keeper well ahead of next year's World Cup.

ETA: There should be no place in the ODI team for the likes of Short and Tye. A good T20 player does not equal a good ODI player.

Sorry, should have indicated I meant Test captain.
