the extended trailer has me hoping this might be more of a "wonder woman" for DC. Not sure if it's because the trailer is long but it feels as if this movie has a lot to pack in. Some interesting shots featured eg the chase through the rooftops - feels very computer gamey with the panned out shot.

the biggest problem of the movie is that aquaman basicaly sucks. Otherwise I agree that the trailer looks interesting.

This reeks more of "Hey, let's hire the guy Marvel fired because it's the best headline!" than "Hey, this guy would be a great fit."

the guy would be a great fit to suicide squad.

I always imagined that suicide squad would have a similar tone to guardians of the galaxy with villains fighting bigger villains than them or simply villains that they don t like.

I think Gunn could be quite a good fit for the Squad but I do think the tone does need to change up a bit from GotG, though since WB were already aiming for the Fast and Furious 'we're fambly' feel I doubt it will much. The Squad are supposed to be a lot more fractious, desparate and less ultimately nice than that.

Anyway isn't great that Gavin O'Connor apparently wrote basically the same film as Birds of Prey and got pissed off and left when that one got the first go which is why this is seemingly happening.

Let's be honest, Gunn could do a better job on any DC property as long as he can write the screenplay too. So irrespective of motivation they are going to benefit and I'm sure fans of DC characters will also benefit.

I'd much rather he was making green lantern corps but maybe that's too close for him? Maybe needs to cleanse the palette first. Gunn made "super" which could translate well to suicide squad. His knack for using music could mean we get a suicide squad film which is actually like the rather good trailer for the first film. And you can't make a DC film unless Harley Quinn is in it and I doubt she could wield a green lantern (maybe a silly UV lantern)

Still, giving him the worst rated DC film to do a sequel to seems an unfair start.

Wonder if Bautista could play any suicide squad characters? Shame killer croc is taken.

Bautista has already tweeted "where do I sign up" in regards to a James Gunn Suicide squad. It also sounds like it won't be a direct sequel so there's room for a new line-up and recasting. I'm sure there are various villains Bautista could play besides a new version of killer croc. I guess he doesn't want to be typecast as giant green guy :)

Looks like they might be pulling some of the Trench storyline into the movie. So, color me somewhat more inclined to see it-- but Momoa ain't no Arthur.

Long time J!  Trying to get back into the flow here.

I'm ok with him.  I sense little bits of the Batman Brave and the Bold animated Arthur in the bombastic nature.

Tweaking Marvel/Disney for caving to absolutely absurd pressure.  Can you imaging if Cerno and his lynch mob  had had a platform when Disney was casting Eddie Murphy in Nutty Professor / Mulan, Robin Williams in Aladdin or Cheech, Whoopi and Bobcat Goldthwait in Lion King?  Everyone of them had, at one point or another said some pretty outrageous things and were still incredibily successful.

Gunn has absolutely demonstrated that he can take C list characters and make them work.

I really doubt DC went for Gunn specifically for some sort of political point. As hauberk says, he's shown he can do very well with an action-packed, VFX-heavy, ensemble film. That's really all the studio needs to go ahead with him.

Concur.  I dropped part of my comment above due to an interruption here.

I meant to say tweaking, while IMO, justified, is equally absurd.

Bautista will be in every shot of the film, but standing so still, he'll seem invisible.

Nice :)

The bolded part still makes me wonder why Suicide Squad is the film of choice as they are pretty grounded. Green Lanterns, Justice League (Dark), Superman or the Flash could all ake better use of Gunn's skills with VFX. I'm sure he can still make a good looking suicide squad too but a bunch of street-level villains doesn't obviously lend itself to big VFX

Well, holy shit. Welcome back, Hauby! :)

I'm trying to get over my comic purism -I mean, I even came around on the whole Iron Fist as missed opportunity to cast an Asian- and, while Arthur may be gruff and mercurial, dude isn't dumb. I'll get over it.

Gunn is a good grab for W/DC. If they're smart, they'll give him a wing to oversee. The comic business practice of having an overarching 'editor' translated into success for Marvel. Too bad Nolan passed. Anyway. I know W/DC is trying to be different but if it works? It's a damn shame W/DC has had so many issues getting this shit off the ground. DC has some very strong properties.

The film cost $175 million. I promise you, that film was loaded with VFX in pretty much every frame. :)

I'm sure it was but it didn't really stand out or feel absolutely necessary for characters with boomerangs and baseball bats as weapons. I guess the fact it was all in the dark made it harder to appreciate too. At least it should look better in Gunn's hands or money better spent anyway.

I'd argue the Justice league, prior to MCU making us like the individual heroes consists of far more iconic heroes than the Avengers. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are arguably the most iconic superheroes out there. I'd say there's only Spider-man and possibly Wolverine who could be considered in the same league. The Flash and Aquaman are no slouches either and I'd have put them on par with Iron Man and Captain America prior to the MCU catapulting the IP of IM, Cap and Thor. Basically DC had to go out of their way to make divisive/terrible films featuring Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. That the films featuring them together underperformed is shocking. A former Marvel EIC was quoted as saying failing to make a hit film with Superman and Batman is like being a porn star who can't get it up. A crude but apt comparison.

I don't know that just because Gunn has made one big CG heavy space franchise that he has to be locked in to doing it always. Especially since as much as he handled it well enough that wasn't what made Guardians what it was.

He's totally free to do whatever he likes but it seemed he was more than happy on expanding the cosmic side of marvel with rumoured spin offs like infinity watch etc. Maybe it's because of that he doesn't want to do big scale projects for a while.

Usually Hollywood is less imaginative eg Snyder directs two comic adaptations and gets the keys to the DC franchise. Ah, ok maybe that's why they aren't going for the obvious ones.

I guess where suicide squad fits his sensibilities is a team dynamic where none of them want to be working together but are literally forced to do so.

I'm sure we'd both agree he'd make an excellent Authority director :)

You say that, but Marvel gave Winter Soldier to a pair of guys who's best known film until then had been You, Me and Dupree, and handed the keys to Thor to Taika Watiti.

Heck, even DC have got Cathy Yan to do Gotham City Sirens.

Fuck yes.

Marvel have took more risks although this was tempered by the fact they adhered to a formula. Although the better films have been the ones that  diverge from the formula most eg winter soldier and Ragnarok. Gunn himself was a risk especially with characters that weren't even popular with in the comics. Dr strange was a bit meh but that's possibly because the director wasn't taking a massive leap from his usual work.

I still wonder how many of these Harley Quinn films will see the light of day. It feels like batgirl was a sure thing for years and then faded away. A bit like the Flash, Cyborg and green lantern films. It's a shame as I'd rather see the variety from the above over Gotham city sirens, birds of prey and suicide squad which are fairly similar projects. Suicide squad must have been profitable for it to be the type of film most emulated. You'd think they'd be chasing up wonder woman like projects but the only aspect I can see there is in the all female teams of sirens and birds which I fear is somewhat oversimplifying why Wonder Woman worked. But I'm maybe being cynical and the writers/directors have exciting screenplays and ideas for these films and that's what sold them over characters who have powers and don't hang out on Gotham rooftops. It's why I hope aquaman is at least decent otherwise I fear DC films will only be based on Gotham vigilantes.
