Where does the term Planetos com from?

I just find it odd, seeing as they refer to their world [or things dealing with the surface of their world] as earth. It just seems odd to me.

It's a fanterm for the planet. The known world is on a planet, the known continents all end in -os so the planet is dubbed Planetos, for lack of a better term. Calling it 'earth' may be confusing is some discussions.

George was asked about this but his answer was everything but clear (as usual, on stuff like this):

Agree - just a continuation of the -os suffix. Andalos, Essos, Sothoryos etc. etc.
