The style put me in mind of Tron Uprising...

I'll certainly give it a look, but I can't see it bringing me around to think Poe is a good character...I'm hoping for a good supporting cast...

I read an article on it and it said he was just a guest appearance in it, not sure if it's 100% factual but it's what I read..

Good spot. I wonder if it's Disney repurposing some of the Tron shows animators?

It certainly doesn't bother me if they do...it took a couple episodes to get used to it, but I really liked Tron. It was a try travesty they didn't give that show more time.

Yeah they were doing some interesting things with the show and filling in some major blanks between films. Great viice cast too. Felt a bit like a scorched earth policy after the film didn't do so well

So, will Matt Smith be wearing a tweed suit, suspenders, bow tie, and a fez in Star Wars IX?

If they want me to burn all my Star Wars merch.

I like the movie a lot more than they do, but I admit a lot of the issues they felt the film had are at least somewhat legit.

I've always liked Rian as a person, from his interviews going back to Brothers Bloom, but all of his films since Brick have felt like there was something missing for me, almost like the screenplays needed one more draft to really make them click, and The Last Jedi is unfortunately part of that trend.

There are so many moments in The Last Jedi that work beautifully for me, but RLM make a point near the end about the weird tonal shift as Rey acts all cock a hoop in the Falcon while blasting TIEs out of the sky and I get exactly what they're talking about. In and of itself it's a fun, exhilarating moment - the kind of thing we fantasized about doing as kids - but as a piece of the overall story it plays like an off note. It's because of little things like this I feel Rian has yet to really master his craft.

That's a good point about the tone shift towards the end. I enjoyed the movie overall, but I agree that the script needed another rewrite. For instance, the conflict between Holdo and Poe felt far more contrived to me than the trip to the casino, which seems to be most common complaint.

A friend of mine reminded me the other day how we had been so impressed when the news came out that Rian had delivered the film far earlier (relative to release date) than either The Force Awakens or Rogue One had been locked. After seeing it we're both still Rian supporters, but couldn't help wondering what could've been had he taken another couple of weeks to tighten up the story and tone a little more.

I'm still really glad they signed him to make his own trilogy too, even with my feeling he's yet to really hit his prime as a filmmaker. I feel like he might have greatness in him and the freedom of movement he'll have with a clean slate, along with the lessons learned while conjuring up Episode VIII, promises to reveal that greatness. I just hope Lucasfilm sticks to their guns and lets him roll with it rather than getting spooked by the intensity of the crybaby hater brigade.

Did we already know Matt Smith had been cast in IX? I'm never sure what news in "new" or not anymore

Yeah it was announced last week sometime. A lot of actual Star Wars news doesn't get big press recently cause if it doesn't relate to social media drama or fucking Nazis.

Agreed with others, I felt exactly this way myself, and couldn't have said it so well as you did here.

I just don't understand all the hate TLJ received from the so called "defenders of Star Wars".  Yes, it had some identity politics weaved into the words, and yes, there was a pretty strong feminist theme as well?  So?  Why is this oh so terrible?  I felt what Daisy did in  The Force Awakens was fantastic, wasn't too on the nose, and the combination of 3 superb actors in Ray, Finn, and Poe - none of whom are white males - was great (as a while male).  I truly loved every second of that film.

I think where Rian's points he was trying to assert in his filming were worthy inclusions, yet unforunately gave no-it-all pinheads ammunition with which to attack him, and others like Kelly Tran for ridiculous reasons.

I'm very much looking forward to the next JJ episode, big time, and will be there opening night, twice. To hell with those who want boycotts and other BS.  Also, if Ezra Bridger's character shows up, I'll be dancing a jig, for real, right in the aisle.

So, haters, about half of you are Russian trolls are bots.

Quote

Bay found that 50.9% of people tweeting negatively about “The Last Jedi” were “politically motivated or not even human,” with a number of these users appearing to be Russian trolls. The overall backlash against the film wasn’t even that great, with only 21.9% of tweets analyzed about the movie being negative in the first place.

ince the political and ethical positions presented in the new films are consistent with older films, it is more likely that the polarization of the Trump era has politicized the fans,” Bay writes of the backlash. “The divisive political discourse of the study period and the months leading up to it, has likely primed these fans with a particular type of political messaging that is in direct conflict with the values presented in ‘The Last Jedi.'”

So is the motivation behind Russia hating on the film just meant to sow dischord in the west? I guess it works to some extent.

Yep! It's not really hating on the film - it's simply exacerbating something that causes a lot of discord to begin with. Russian trolls are doing this basically all over the place, but TLJ is one of the only places I know of that is purely apolitical at the start or has nothing directly to do with politicalization.

But yeah, all those people saying how 'so many people' thought this so there must be a problem? That's bullshit.
