Daemon the Leaner
So Vertonghen as LB ? Damn, can't wait for this clash.

Kante makes his living off tackling everyone in sight but Dembele once went six months without being tackled and is, percentage-completed-wise, the best dribbler in the top European leagues. He is ridiculously hard to get the ball off. Even his unwillingness to pass the ball more than about five yards might become beneficial in that particular battle because while it might slow play down (presumably it's the reason Martinez doesn't play him normally), it also makes it harder for Kante to intercept. Denvek
An interesting stat that I’ll post here before it becomes wrong is that so far, the only countries who have so far had their undisputed best World Cup performance are the two newbies, Iceland and Panama. And if Croatia beat Belgium in the third place match, they’ll be the only countries who can say that.
KingintheNorth4
I'm leaning towards Belgium on winning this one.
polishgenius
France urgently need to readjust and swap Matuidi and Griezmann's positions, because right now Pogba and Kante are just getting completely outnumbered in midfield while Chadli feels completely unthreatened by Matuidi and is just roaming forward at will. AndrewJ
Quite a bright nil-nil so far. Let’s hope the goals start to flow in the second half, though.
Consigliere
Belgium were the better side in that half. They really bossed France in the opening 20 minutes or so. Still not sure why Deschamps persists with Matuidi at LM in a 4-2-3-1. Would be better off using him as part of a midfield three in a 4-3-3 and not be outnumbered in midfield.
Daemon the Leaner
Decent half. Sure it would have been far batter had Pavard crossed that ball back rather than shot. 12 minutes ago, Soylent Dropbear said: Chadli and Dembele though.... dear. Wtf? Chadli and Dembélé have been decent in their respective roles thus far. Fellaini and Vertonghen have been average, if not mediocre.
polishgenius
I can get the criticism of Dembele because he's had a couple of sloppy moments but I don't really get what Chadli is supposed to have done that he hasn't?
Consigliere
Nice header, quality ball in. France have started this half much better.
Consigliere
Dembele is off now. Did not have a good game.
polishgenius
Mertens looks like he's remembered how to be a winger. He's put in more good crosses since he came on than in all his previous appearances in the tournament together.
AndrewJ
Seems Giroud has bet everything he has on Belgium. He’s had about 5 real chances and missed them all by ever increasing margins.
Consigliere
Yeah, Mertens is putting in some delicious crosses.
polishgenius
Pogba's now dedicated his game to man-marking Fellaini, which is a weird sentence.
Consigliere
Pogba has actually put in a very good defensive shift over the course of the tournament, not just this game.
Consigliere
Mbappe is a wonderful player but it looks like he's taken a page out of Neymar's book when it comes to dramatics.
GallowKnight
Well, Belgium is a great team, but never when it really matters the most.
AncalagonTheBlack
Congrats to France for making sure that Martinez will never be known s a World Cup winning manager! Now time for Croatia to do the job tomorrow!

Putting the shift in when asked to play defensively has never been Pogba's problem. Great today, anyway. Him and Varane are the reason they won. Not as open a game as we might have hoped but a good one.
