ASOIAF Book Awards

After reading through all the books I kinda summarized in my head these categories for the POV characters and I thought it would be fun to just throw out an award type summary and see what other people come up with.  Mind you, these are a product of my own opinion, which many might see as highly suspect and borderline worthless, but I thought others might enjoy filling in their own names into the following categories.  Or at least have fun trying to fit their opinions into my categories.

Overall Best POV Character: Jamie Lannister

Most Annoying POV Character: Sansa Stark*

Most Nauseating POV Character: Cersei Lannister

Most Important POV Character: Eddard Stark**

Most Oblivious to Their Own Stupidity POV Character: Catelyn Stark

Easiest to Read POV Character: Davos Seaworth

Most Engaging POV Character: Arianne Martell

Funniest POV Character: Tyrion Lannister

Most Boring POV Character: Brienne of Tarth

* Sansa's later POV chapters weren't as annoying, but the earlier ones were bad enough for her to run away with this award

** I say Eddard is the most important as I kept going back to his chapters and earmarking pages for clues to the most significant plots in Westeros.

Bonus: One award that bridges the books and TV show:

TV character that is far better than the book version: Tywin Lannister

* I say Jon Snow for the most important because outside of Melisandre, he is the only POV character actually trying to combat the true threat to the world, instead of squabbling over who gets to sit on the big spiky chair.

** I think Sam's POV chapters are going to be really exciting in TWoW, now that he is finally at the Citadel, but overall for ASoS and AFfC they where pretty meh in my opinion.

*Not entirely because of Theon, he just has a harsh arc all around.

**Again, not entirely because of Sam, he just tends to hang around funny guys.

***Quentyn managed to bore for only one book, but at least he was tidy about it.

Hotah getting his own POV chapter is a bit of a head scratcher, I mean his long axe has more personality than he does.  I suppose GRRM just needed a warm body to witness the events in Dorne and transcribe it in a chapter, as opposed to someone who could bring life to the events.

It's my belief that those chapters were originally planned for Arys Oakheart, but somewhere in the rewrite they were dropped in favor of Areo. Once Arys is killed and Arianne is locked up, GRRM had no perspective for the Dornish court, which I believe was originally planned for Arianne. Arys was supposed to be our window into the Myrcella plot, but GRRM decided to keep that more under wraps and use Arianne to flesh out the consequences.

This would explain why Arys only has one chapter that could have easily been written from Arianne's POV instead. Based on the copy and paste job GRRM did on the first Samwell chapter in AFfC to get it out the door, I would suspect that he either didn't have the time or he didn't have the energy to rewrite that Arys chapter from Arianne's POV. It worked as is and he left it.

What's interesting is I was watching a GRRM interview where he explained how he picked POV characters and he made a point to say he only picks characters that have an interesting story of their own, or some considerable effect on the main story.  I can't honestly believe that after seeing some of the POV characters in the last two books.  Some of them, like Hotah, are clearly just there as a set of eyes so I don't buy his explanation as 100% true.

Bran for most boring.

I skimmed most of his chapters after ACoK, because they are completely uninteresting. It's not like he hangs out with anybody fun, either (Hodor aside), or witnesses any events important to the rest of the storyline.

I wouldn't call Bran the most boring, but he is the slowest plot of them all. In the stone anchor (ADwD), he has a total of three chapters (and they terminate mid book)! Some POVs have four times that many (and still manage to get less done somehow ).

If you're the fan who prefer politics and trial scenes, yes.  You will find Bran boring because his line is all about the supernatural.  I'm not his big fan but some of his chapters are very good.

Hard to say in some cases, because some, like Tyrion, begin as funniest and end with most annoying, or like Arya, begin with most engaging and end with most distasteful, or Bran, begin with sweetest and end with almost most boring.  These three were my fave characters at first. Then there's Brienne who began as most boring but has become engaging.

So I'm just giving out awards for consistent characters:

Consistently engaging: Jaime and Jon

Consistently boring: Quentyn Martell

Consistently oblivious: Cersei

Consistently annoying: Damphair, Victarian and all POV Martells (except Oberyn, but was he a POV?)

Consistently most important: Dany, in her own estimation.

Overall Best POV Character: Daenerys Targaryen

Most Annoying POV Character:  Perhaps a few.  Examples are Arriane, Sansa, the Damphair, and Asha

Most Nauseating POV Character:  None.

Most Important POV Character: Brandon Stark

Most Oblivious to Their Own Stupidity POV Character: Theon Greyjoy

Easiest to Read POV Character: Cersei Lannister because she's simple.

Most Engaging POV Character: Barristan Selmy

Funniest POV Character: Arya Stark

Most Boring POV Character: Toss up between Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly.
