Laws That Keep Me From Drinking

Recently my house lost power for approximately 20 hours.

After the fact many people have said to me (combining multiple advice into one sentence), "what did you do during that time? Whenever my power goes out I usually start up a bonfire and drink with friends until it comes back on".

Great advice right?

But I couldn't do this. The power went out on a Sunday, and because of a certain religious majority that made laws in the area, it is illegal in the Parish to buy hard liquor on Sundays.

Is this correct? Shouldn't I have the right to imbibe my body with poison whenever I damm well please? Shouldn't these laws be cast out?

What do ya'll think?

Edit: Updated the thread title to get it more in line with the light heartedness I meant it to be.

I think the real lesson here is you need to stack up on emergency supplies.

That's called victim blaming.

And I'll take 95% of the heat for not being prepared for a power outage. But that other 5%? What's so special about Sunday I can't go to the store and by Jack Daniels?

To me it's just another day of the week.

All I know is your location says you're from Louisiana.  And New Orleans is in Louisiana.  And every time I've been to New Orleans, drinking was never a problem.  So :P:D

That's the south of Louisiana dude!

In a strange twist of fate, the further south you get in this state, the less oppressive the religious laws are. (Has to do with New Orleans being a port, bringing in that enlightened shit from up north of the country)

Edit: Ya'll ever see that documentary featuring the Avenger Kevin Bacon? It's like that.

Oh sure - and the rats increase.  Stayed right by the Superdome, and they're there dude.  I think you should have every right to drink on Sundays.  I'm also pretty sure this question has nothing to do with the Napoleonic code.

Say what about the Napoleonic code?

Here's a map of Louisiana and Parishes with restrictions on sales of hard liquor on Sundays. http://www.stateliquorlaws.com/counties/LA

That restriction is statewide in a lot of places.  Two that I’ve lived in for sure - Virginia and Texas.  In both, iirc, you also can’t buy beer or wine on Sunday until the afternoon, bein that you’re supposed to be at church Sunday mornings and all.  Also, in both, liquor has to be sold at a designated store and in Va they are state run.  When I lived in Arkansas the next county over was dry completely.  Like, at all times.  Ouch.

Anyway, I’m used to this.  I was in New Mexico for work a couple of weeks ago and it always blows me away a little to walk into a Walgreens and see the giant liquor section.  California is like that too where it seems like you can sell liquor wherever the fuck you want.  Heathens!  I approve, but it’s weird to me, as aside from a couple of years in DC and one in the UK the rest of my life has been spent in regions largely run by Jesus Christ.

It was statewide in Indiana back when I lived there. The only places that could sell booze at all on Sundays were restaurants.

Since we were only a few miles south of the Michigan border, it was easy enough to drive up there where no such restrictions were in place.

New York used to have a no booze sales before noon on Sunday rule, but I think that's gone.

CT had no alcohol sales after 8pm and and none on Sunday until like 2009 or 2010 except at restaurants and bars.  I used to drive to Massachusetts to buy beer a lot.

Even when they opened on Sundays it was restricted hours, I think 10am to 5pm.  Most of the store owners hated it because they were basically selling the same amount of stuff just spread over 7 days instead of 6.

Fucking blue laws and religious considerations.

Look, it's your own darn fault you don't live in Nevada where liquor is sold 24/7.   Now that's civilized.

By that logic stores should have to be open 24/7 to allow you the right to buy booze.

Yeah, I'm kind of spoiled here in Washington state. One time around 20 years ago I was working a late shift and I stopped at a Safeway around 2 or 3 am. I wanted to buy some beer and they wouldn't sell it to me. I didn't even plan to drink it that night. I was simply planning to drink the next day as I had it off, but they wouldn't sell it to me. I was outraged. What am I, living in communist Russia?

I'm also outraged at the high prices of legal pot and edibles.

I'd also like to complain about the lack of beer in movie theaters.

But doesn't Washington state have the highest alcohol tax in the country by a wide margin? Is it worth the tradeoff?

And I guess you don't have Alamo Drafthouses up there. They're movie theaters that serve beer and food.

I'll concede some of the laws that keep me from drinking are in the public's best interest. Like laws that prevent the sale of alcohol after a certain time to keep drunks off the road.

But the Sunday thing? It's not like the store is closed. It's open selling other stuff and the booze is right there. But I can't buy it because why? What's so special about Sunday that liquor shouldn't be sold?

I'm glad you agree with me Scott.

The spoiler was my initial reply.

Winco, among others.

edt; oh you of such small imaginings, booze available all the time means some bars never close (hint-casinos) some covienence stores never close, and some liquor stores never close.   Some but not all of which can be found in the casinos.  Bottoms Up!

Yeah, let's just get it over with and convert the churches into casinos. And once automated cars kick in we can be blitzed at all times.
