I remember @Theda Baratheon Posting that she’s had watched this and seem to recall she enjoyed watching?

MAndy was fucking GREAT. Absolutely insane - bloody, trippy and totally over the top but an excellent take on the fairy tale heroes journey frame whilst creating its own fully realised primal & ethereal world

I had a day off work today so I went to see First Man this afternoon. I really liked it, it has a similar sort of feel to Whiplash with the focus on obsession and a bit of a claustrophobic feel to it that's slightly at odds with a film about space exploration but it's pretty cool.

every other review I read/see has me switching opinions on whether to see this or not. Some make me think it'll be cool but others suggest Gosling's performance keeps things emotionally distant. I think the best solution will be to use up one of my free cinema tickets (I've two to use on a sunday before mid nov and there's not a lot of competition).

I think that's intentional, by the sound of it Armstrong was generally an emotionally distant man; his family certainly seem to think it's an accurate portrayal. I thought it was strength of the film, Gosling comes across really well as a man really keeping a lid on the emotions of losing a number of friends in the pursuit of the goal of reaching the moon rather that it being a flat performance. It made some of the touching moments of the film more powerful for me.

Is that Haunting of Hill House Netflix series gory? I like horror stuff, but not so much really gory stuff.

Not really.  There's no scenes depicting gore (except one -minor spoiler-

death - but it's oozing blood post blunt trauma

), however there are man depictions of ghosts in various states of unpleasantness.  Nothing at all like most torture porn horror movies.

I did finish it last night and loved it.  Definitely recommended.

I just saw Bad Times at the El Royale and really liked it. It was long, as others said, but I didn’t think it dragged at all. One complaint is that the previews/trailers for this showed way too much. I was waiting for a few scenes to happen and kinda figured out some character’s fates based on them. Annoying.

I also finished The Haunting of Hill House. I was really blown away with the first half of this but it kinda slowed down after a few things happened and they switched up the format. Overall it was pretty great though and I recommend to any horror fan. Episode 8 spoiler:

Spoiler

The part when the sisters were driving back to Hill house and Nell’s ghost screamed in the car when they were arguing scared the fucking shit out of me. I was watching at work with headphones and fucking damn.

Once Upon a Time in America  is now on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it, make sure you do. Just note that it’s very long and can be really slow at times, but it’s one of the greatest movies ever made.

If you’re a Tarantino fan, just note that this film and Once Upon a Time in The West are largely what guide most of his films.

I heartily dislike Tarantino and his glib glee in presenting non-historic takes on violence for the fun of it, but I admire the heck out of these two films.  Have seen them both multiple times.

Watching via netflix streaming is a very good way to watch them too, because, as observed, they are long.  One can take breaks streaming and not lose any momentum though.

I totally agree... and its sad that its usually left out of the conversation... I think because a lot of people watched the shorter version, which wasn't as good...

Also make sure it’s the proper full version of OUaTiA, and not the horrendously butchered theatrical release.

I’d probably say the Dollars trilogy was a bigger influence, but he was obviously a huge fan of Leone in general. I’ve just seen him bring up TGtBatU countless times as being one of his all time favorite films.

Yeah, never watch the short one if you haven't seen the film. It's terrible and the editing they did here broke Leone's heart. I believe he said he'd never make another film because of it.

Interesting. I had only heard him discuss the OUaT movies, but yeah he said he loved all of Leone's work in general. I think it's cool that the title of his next film is a homage to him.

Also, while it's not on the same level, Once Upon a Time in Mexico is dope. I wonder how much influence Tarantino had on that one given that it was written and directed by a close friend who he's worked with several times before.

Anyone planning on watching My Dinner With Hervé starring Peter Dinklage as Hervé Villechaize tonight on HBO? I think I'm going to give it a go. Aside from both Dinklage and Villechaize being little people I see no similarity between the two of them but Dinklage is one of our best actors and I'm interested in how he interprets and embodies Villechaize.

I watched the first 3 eps of The Haunting of Hill House on Sunday.  I just couldn't get into it as no one in the Crain family seemed very likeable.

Understandable, but I'd recommend you stick with it.The series improves from ep 4 on with character centered episodes which shed light on how they've gotten to where they are in the story.Personally I don't find much wrong with Nell or Luke as humans, though obviously damaged ones.

That part made my husband scream. I love that people get that engaged with things they are watching.

Overall I thought Hill House was really well done. It was genuinely atmospheric and scary without being OTT. The look of the house and its various occupants was great. It had interesting characters and for the most part the acting was fairly good. But there were some highs and lows - at points some of the performances were genuinely engaging and believable. At other points they were just a little 'too much' (I'm thinking Theo here.) But Carla Gugino is perfect as always.

The final episode was a little bit saccharine and Hallmark-ish for my liking - but that's a minor quibble. I found the pacing and storytelling of the whole series to be satisfying, they did a good job of linking the past and present day scenes together. Would recommend. :)

^^^^ Agreed, the actress who played Theo was a little much at times, and I usually don’t notice stuff like that(unless they’re really bad). Everyone else was solid though. I actually want to see the recent adaptation of Gerald’s Game because I heard Gugino puts in a stellar performance.

Gerald’s Game is really good. She’s the only person on screen for a lot of the movie and it’s never boring. Great ending, too.
