Watch, Watched, Watching: That last thread... forget about it completely. It doesn't matter.

Caught the first episode of Cosmos, the Carl Sagan reboot fronted by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, as it's on UK Netflix. Not bad, but seriously lightweight and bizarrely unscientific in places (making the real asteroid belt look like the one from Empire Strikes Back is really, really silly). Will continue checking it out between other things.

By sheer force of will I've made it through to Episode 10 of Season 2 of Luke Cage. Probably the weakest Marvel Netflix season to date, including Iron Fist Season 1(which at least had a really good semi-villain in Faramir). Some great actors but so slow as to be almost inert. They had maybe 4 episodes worth of plot, max, which they've dragged out to 13. Ridiculous.

BoJack Horseman S5

I think that although it's perhaps less immediately impressive than S4, its core exploration of the question of art and life imitating one-another is extremely strong and was very powerfully correlated to modern real world life. The opening scene on the Philbert set sets this chain off extremely cleverly. There's a very dark irony that runs through this whole season and the ending is perfect.

I thought INT. SUB was the standout episode. I loved its framing device and I love how the series often has you in stitches and then hits you with profound character observations and developments. The Diane-centric episode was especially brilliant too, The Dog Days Are Over. I admire the daring episode concept behind Free Churro but I felt the interesting elements of it were arguably too few to stand a whole episode.

But honestly, I can hardly express in words that do justice to how much I love this show. I can't imagine that there's a more thought-provoking series being made.

Viewers frequently ask, "What else is there to watch that's like GOT?"

The answer is Billions.

The conflicts in this series are as pointless in terms of morality, good vs. bad, right vs. wrong, who is good for the country? as the real Wars of the Roses were.  The conflict is that everyone wants the power, believes they are entitled to it, and have no interest in the good of anyone. It's about winning and losing, back-stabbing and getting advantage by any means available, all taking place far above the non-entities, such as you and me.

One can even see the characters who serve as performance coaches functioning as magicians -- and at least one female character also as a dom -- and what they do a form of magic.

I love this show, and loved it particularly when a transgender actor shows up as a transgender character in season 2.  The cast of characters and the actors who play them are terrific.  The writing is excellent with constant twists and turns.

I couldn't make I through an episode of that pretension dialogue on Billions.

The first two episodes of The Deuce have been good, but I kind of miss the grittiness of the first season.

6 or 7 episodes into Ozark and Petty is losing his shit. The character I love to hate on that series. And, just as in season 1, Ruth Langmore is stealing the show.

Binged season 1 of "the deuce" and really enjoyed it. All the characters are really interesting and somehow even the horrible characters are compelling and even have moments of sympathy eg the pimps lamenting their growing obsolescence.

It's also not what I was really expecting - I held off as i thought it was going to be "boogie nights - the tv show" but I should know better that a David Simon show is never just about the thing it appears to be.

The only thing I'm not sold on is Franco as the twins. I find them really hard to tell apart in terms of character and many scenes I'm left wondering which is which. Now, Franco can act (having seen the disaster artist) so I can only think it's because the two characters are meant to be similar with the exception of one being more cocky and prone to mistakes. The finale didn't feel that final which i guess is fine for me as I can just roll on into season 2.

The second episode of "Black Earth Rising" really set things moving. To be honest the first 5 minutes should have been the last 5 mins of episode 1 and I hope not too many people dropped the show for lack of action. John Goodman is excellent as always and the lead actress is a revelation (she was apparently in Black Mirror's "USS Callister") somehow coming off as powerful and frail almost simultaneously. She is excellent and I'd be surprised if the show doesn't have her popping up in a lot more.

They’ve addressed the twins being hard to tell apart in S2.

Also, how dare you insult Boogie Nights! Probably still my favorite PT Anderson film. Need to rewatch it soon now that we lost Burt Reynolds.

I'm watching Big Little Lies - how did I sleep on this show whilst it was airing? The cast is so good, the cinematography is as good if not better. The Kidman relationship is really fucking me up. I'm not even trying to think about the central plot line so to speak, it's just nice to watch a well written show after the number of duds I've seen over the past year ( I'm looking at you, Westworld)

Might have to go find the thread and read all of y'alls thoughts :)

That's a lot of the points of Billions. That's who these people are., Throughout the ages.  No different from the fantasy people in fantasy GOT, and their goddmed pretentious speeches either.  Gads, that awful Tyrion speech that supposedly save KL  for instance . . . .

The Affair season 4 episode 9 just emotionally destroyed me.

Just watched it, and that was fucking brutal.

I saw a news story a few weeks ago about Ruth Wilson not being back next season, so I knew it was coming, but fuuuuuuuuck.

Just saw the trailer for the new Netflix horror “Apostle” it’s like a gorier welsh version of The Wicker Man! Oh my GOD my nerdy little heart is excited !!!!

Yes, I’m excited for this too! It looks crazy. It’s also written and directed by Gareth Evans, who did The Raid movies.

I’m almost done with season 3 of Gomorrah. So far it’s not as good as the first two seasons but it’s still pretty great.

Is the documentary about "alternative medicine" or is it about trying to get to the bottom of such ailments? The latter I have time for as medical research is trying to improve upon lacking current medicine/practicioners, the former would just infuriate me as it just promotes people not trying to get to the underlying issues and just hand their money to people.

I think (from what I saw) it might be both (it's where people cannot get a diagnosis/treatment because we can't explain what is happening to them or why). The woman with the EM sensitivity is interesting. Also the mould allergy one. You'd think the mould one was an immunocompromised situation really... I love immunology but if I start to think about it too much in a meta way it terrifies me.

I assume they test that said person still has EM issue when she isn't aware of EM? In which case it is pretty fascinating. I can imagine how anything messing with brain signals could easily be felt as pain/confusion.

I'm sort of Impressed the immune system mostly manages the balance it has achieved. Too strong and it's more detrimental than any foreign invader. Too weak and you are potentially dying from any infection.

Funnily enough they did address that in the season 2 opener both with a verbal joke and by making them more visually obvious and tweaking their behaviour so more distinguishable. The 5+ year time skip was a bit jarring for me.

Oh, I wasn't insulting "boogie Nights" I just felt that film did a good enough job of the 70s porn industry without needing a TV show belabouring the point.

Finally started Killing Eve, excellent first episode. I was planning to watch week-by-week but the whole series is also available on iPlayer so i’ll likely wind up bingeing it.

also need to watch A Discovery of Witches

I need to start "killing Eve". I enjoyed "fleabag" but keeping thinking it means the new show is a dark comedy.

"Discovery of witches" is ok. I haven't read the books but could follow but don't have benefit of knowing what else is coming up as it was a little slow.

First episode was good, it had humourous elements but definitely wasnt a comedy. Kept the balance well. Since we just had the Emmys and Sandra Oh was up for this, I'll compare to the other dramas that were nominated and say it takes itself less seriously than them and seems 'lighter' for want of a better description. That isn't a criticism though.

I also haven't read A Discovery of Witches. I'll check out the first episode then decide if I want to keep watching and whether it will work best as weekly viewing or a binge when it's all out.

The first Raid is fantastic, the second one is a bunch of absolutely amazing action scenes tied to a middling movie,
