Prince Yourwetdream Aeryn
This lie could make Ned and Renly allies. And this isn't lie. Didn't Stannis tell that he doesn't want throne but it is his duty?
Trigger Warning
I don't see how this would change what happened, Ned didn't want to seize the children in the night and Renly wasn't prepared to wait for Cersei to strike, Ned would still refuse him and Renly would still take his men and leave. Also Stannis and the throne isn't even on Renly's radar, Renly fully expects Joffrey to inherit as he intended to enforce Ned's regency.
John Suburbs
Why should Ned trust anything that Renly says on this matter? Ned would still see it as his own duty to notify Stannis of what has happened, then allow Stannis to return to the capital and formally abdicate in favor of his younger brother if he wanted to. Euron III Greyjoy
Yes Stannis didn't want the throne, but he would've still gone to war for it because he sees it as his right to be King. To be honest, even if Renly did tell that lie I doubt Ned would've believed it.
Ralphis Baratheon
If Renly was going to lie he should have told Ned that Stannis told him through a coded letter or messenger that he commanded him to take the Throne in Stannis' name and take Cersei's kids and everything else Renly wanted to do. Short of that Renly wasn't going to get Ned to follow his plans.
Ylath's Snout
Renly was just completely underprepared for Ned and his unreasoning honor. He clearly didn't know the Hand well enough to formulate his proposal in a way that Ned wouldn't find completely appalling. Or failing that finding the right leaver to put pressure on the Northern to force him to do what Renly wanted. This is what happens when you don't do your homework kids. Ned wouldn't take them in the name of just securing himself a Lord Protector/Regent, and neither would he in the name of Stannis.
Targaryen Restoration
I don't think Ned would buy that. Stannis wants the throne. He might say he doesn't but the way he attacked KL shows how badly he wanted it.
Trigger Warning
Thinking about it I think the OP might be getting the show and books crossed over anyway, a lot of people remember the Renly/Ned conversation as Renly going after the throne which didn't happen in the books, Stannis or the line of succession didn't even come up and Ned would have rejected Renly regardless.
