Legitimate_Bastard
The Nights Watch vow states they are the watcher on the walls. Walls is plural. What are the other walls? I briefly looked to see if I could find an answer and could not find one. If this has been discussed please direct me to the thread. Could the lands of always winter connect to Essos and those other walls be The five forts? Winterfell? Anyone have any ideas and will we find out in the next book? Rufus Snow
It's just a turn of phrase. No single watcher can stand on plural walls anyway. Even if a castle only has a single ring-wall, we still talk about the 'castle walls'. And no. LoAW doesn't connect to Essos, George has said this specifically. Loose Bolt
Another possibility is that some fortresses of NW are older than the wall. After all it should take very long time to build 300 miles long wall. So IMHO at first there were many strongholds and the wall was build much later. Or very long time NW actually defended many walls until the wall united all those.
