Did the Red Comet _____ ?

Ellard Stark

It is the sword that slays the season, like Chayle tells us.

It is a harbinger of what is to come. Blood.

My favourite speculation on the Red Comet is that its there just to show that people from different factions interpret it in different ways, e.g. Daenerys and her dragons, Joffrey's coronation, Robb's coronation, etc.

This too, everyone interprets it differently. Most interpretations seem to have a negative/hostile nature.

If you subscribe to the orbital path being what's changing , the seasons vary and magic vascilates based on parts of the solar system being strewn with a denser magic field for planetos to pass through.  And the planet just crossed the border zone as evidenced by hot comet action in the sky and the cold climate shift that's cooling down Hot Pie.

"When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt."

It heralded Dany being born again as Azor Ahai.

And the "waking of the dragons from stone."  A feminine take on Arthur pulling the sword from the stone.  Here it is dragons.

 Written history is short.

Eh, Westeros has a remarkable amount of recorded history through the Maesters given their technology level. If there was a pattern to the weather, I expect it would've been documented in Oldtown.

Mayhaps. Though Jon isn't reborn in salt and smoke at that time is he?

next book maybe? The only definitive aa example we have is dany sacrificing her true love to make flaming weapons.
Jon really follows the prince that was promised archetype. He is born of the aerys and rhaella line, so both kinda work. Also, prophecy is foolish and george lampoons it on the regular

In ASOS? What happens then. He could of course, be reborn in salt and smoke in Winds. The prophecy doesn't have to mean they all happen at once.

All true.

Also true. If Jon's the prince that was promised, then we'll know it sooner or later. However, at the moment, it's Dany who fits the story best (which may be a point against her, of course!)

I interpreted all the "meanings" for the comet's appearance to be sort of self serving.   Except Osha's, she said it meant dragons.   Didn't seem to rock her world or give her any answers.  Just a very basic meaning.   I'm throwing in with her as she seems to gain nothing personally from it.

I tried to think of something a blood coloured streak in the sky might be compared to in a positive light and all I could think of was smeared strawberry jam, lol.

Old Nan thought it meant dragons, Osha thought fire and blood and nothing sweet, and Chayle thought it was the sword that slays the seasons.

Quote
Maester Luwin did not think so. "Wolves often howl at the moon. These are howling at the comet. See how bright it is, Bran? Perchance they think it is the moon."

When Bran repeated that to Osha, she laughed aloud. "Your wolves have more wit than your maester," the wildling woman said. "They know truths the grey man has forgotten." The way she said it made him shiver, and when he asked what the comet meant, she answered, "Blood and fire, boy, and nothing sweet."

Bran asked Septon Chayle about the comet while they were sorting through some scrolls snatched from the library fire. "It is the sword that slays the season," he replied, and soon after the white raven came from Oldtown bringing word of autumn, so doubtless he was right.

Though Old Nan did not think so, and she'd lived longer than any of them. "Dragons," she said, lifting her head and sniffing. She was near blind and could not see the comet, yet she claimed she could smell it. "It be dragons, boy," she insisted. Bran got no princes from Nan, no more than he ever had.

Osha knows that the red comet indicates that the Long Night is coming soon, she fled south to get away from the Others.

I think the red comet is a weirwood, and that was why magic returned when it showed up.

The Red Comet is also  called Mormont's Torch, and mormonta (wormwood) is a comet from the bible, that is prophesied to land on Earth and kill a bunch of people during the apocalypse.  Wormwood sounds like weirwood, absinthe is made from wormwood, and weirwood paste is psychedelic.

Cressen says to Shireen  "The thing in the sky is a comet, sweet child. A star with a tail, lost in the heavens. It will be gone soon enough, never to be seen again in our lifetimes. Watch and see."

I think this heavy foreshadows that the comet will come back in the next book.

Gendry calls the Red comet the red sword.  Lightbringer is the Red Sword of Heroes, it is the comet.

"It is the war for the dawn you speak of, my lady. But where is the prince that was promised?"
"He stands before you," Melisandre declared, "though you do not have the eyes to see. Stannis Baratheon is Azor Ahai come again, the warrior of fire. In him the prophecies are fulfilled. The red comet blazed across the sky to herald his coming, and he bears Lightbringer, the red sword of heroes."

"In ancient books of Asshai it is written that there will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him."

Lightbringer is the Red Comet that ends the Long Night.  "Draw from the fire" refers to when the comet comes back around the sun.

So what is the object(s) that caused the eclipse?

"the God-on-Earth, the only begotten son of the Lion of Night and Maiden Made-of-Light "

The Maiden made of light is the sun, the Lion of Night is some unknown celestial body, from which the god on earth descended, and returned to after his death.

"In the annals of the Further East, it was the Blood Betrayal, as his usurpation is named, that ushered in the age of darkness called the Long Night. Despairing of the evil that had been unleashed on earth, the Maiden-Made-of-Light turned her back upon the world, and the Lion of Night came forth in all his wroth to punish the wickedness of men.
How long the darkness endured no man can say, but all agree that it was only when a great warrior—known variously as Hyrkoon the Hero, Azor Ahai, Yin Tar, Neferion, and Eldric Shadowchaser—arose to give courage to the race of men and lead the virtuous into battle with his blazing sword Lightbringer that the darkness was put to rout, and light and love returned once more to the world."

" The Five Forts are very old, older than the Golden Empire itself; some claim they were raised by the Pearl Emperor during the morning of the Great Empire to keep the Lion of Night and his demons from the realms of men

The Long Night was a eclipse event, and no natural moon could have eclipsed the entire Earth for a generation, so it must have been a huge artificial satellite.   The Others can only move when it is dark, if there was no impending eclipse event, there would be nothing to worry about.  The Others would have to stay up north.

Check out my thread on Hyrkoon being Perun from slavic mythology

"Thousands and thousands of years ago, a winter fell that was cold and hard and endless beyond all memory of man. There came a night that lasted a generation . . . In that darkness, the Others came for the first time"

" Colloquo Votar recounts a curious legend from Yi Ti, which states that the sun hid its face from the earth for a lifetime, ashamed at something none could discover, and that disaster was averted only by the deeds of a woman with a monkey's tail."

The woman with a monkey's tail is the red comet.  The Sun hid its face, it was an eclipse event that lasted a lifetime.  The Red Comet collides with the object that was causing the eclipse, ending the Long Night.  " It is said that her cry of anguish and ecstasy left a crack across the face of the moon"

Another moon cracking, when a red sword is plunged into the heart of something.

"Once there were two moons in the sky, but one wandered too close to the sun and cracked from the heat. A thousand thousand dragons poured forth, and drank the fire of the sun. That is why dragons breathe flame. One day the other moon will kiss the sun too, and then it will crack and the dragons will return."

The "wandered too close to the sun" sounds like an eclipse event, and something cracked it in half and fiery dragons rained on the Earth, sounds like a massive collision in space that rained debris on the Earth.  And they predict that it will happen again.

"Benerro jabbed a finger at the moon, made a fist, spread his hands wide. When his voice rose in a crescendo, flames leapt from his fingers with a sudden whoosh and made the crowd gasp. The priest could trace fiery letters in the air as well. Valyrian glyphs. Tyrion recognized perhaps two in ten; one was Doom, the other Darkness."

"The maester was peering through his big Myrish lens tube, measuring shadows and noting the position of the comet that hung low in the morning sky."

What is the shadow that Luwin was measuring, that was mentioned alongside the comet?

In Bran's falling dreams he is essentially a comet falling,

" It seemed as though he had been falling for years. . . The ground was closer now, still far far away, a thousand miles away, but closer than it had been. It was cold here in the darkness. There was no sun, no stars, only the ground below coming up to smash him, and the grey mists, and the whispering voice."

"Bran looked down, and felt his insides turn to water. The ground was rushing up at him now. The whole world was spread out below him"

He saw Winterfell as the eagles see it, the tall towers looking squat and stubby from above, the castle walls just lines in the dirt. He saw Maester Luwin on his balcony, studying the sky through a polished bronze tube and frowning as he made notes in a book"

What did Luwin see that upset him?

"There were shadows all around them. One shadow was dark as ash, with the terrible face of a hound. Another was armored like the sun, golden and beautiful. Over them both loomed a giant in armor made of stone, but when he opened his visor, there was nothing inside but darkness and thick black blood. "

Luwin had been "measuring shadows" with his telescopre, and in Bran's falling dream, the Clegane brothers were shadows, and Gregor caused an eclipse when he loomed over the sun (the Clegane sigil is three black dogs on yellow, in chinese myth a black dog causes eclipses, and in Norse myth the wolves eat the sun and moon during Ragnarok, and in Hindu myth a dragon (decapitated Rahu) eats the sun during an eclipse.  Dragons come from the "Shadow," and dragons came from the second moon that cracked, the dragon also has three heads.  The Shadow is a celestial body that is not visible because it is black, and reflects no light.  It is only detectable as a hole in the sky when it blocks out known stars or other planets, (or the sun).

(see also the Black Planet Yuggoth from Lovecraft, and the undiscovered dark planet from Asimov's Nightfall, which causes an eclipse every 2000 years and leads to the fiery collapse of civilization, the cultists who predict the eclipse are "Apostles of Flame" and the eclipse is called the Long Night)

In the faith of the seven, the Smith is Mars, the Warrior is Mercury, the Maiden is Venus morningstar, the Mother is Venus evenstar, the Father is Jupiter, and the Crone is Saturn, the Stranger is this black mysterious "planet"

"the Stranger was neither male nor female, yet both, ever the outcast, the wanderer from far places, less and more than human, unknown and unknowable. Here the face was a black oval, a shadow with stars for eyes."

The rest of the planets have genders and are knowable, the Stranger does not have a gender and it is unknowable and an outcast (does not have a regular orbit), it is a wanderer from far places, that is, not from our solar system.

Anyway, back to the comet

In the Hindu myth the god Vishnu in the form of fish with a horn foretold the King of a great flood that would soon come, they built a boat and survived the flood.  The fish with a large horn has been interpreted as a comet.  I think the Horn of Winter is the comet, the Sword that slays the seasons, and brings down the wall.  And there is a flood coming too.  Jojen had the greendream of the sea coming to Winterfell,

"I dreamed that the sea was lapping all around Winterfell. I saw black waves crashing against the gates and towers, and then the salt water came flowing over the walls and filled the castle."

and Melisandre

"Then the towers by the sea, crumbling as the dark tide came sweeping over them, rising from the depth. Shadows in the shape of skulls, skulls that turned to mist, bodies locked together in lust, writhing and rolling and clawing. Through curtains of fire great winged shadows wheeled against a hard blue sky."

The comet also signals the climate change.  The seasonal change may not be random at all but because the lifespan of humans is short it just appears that way.  Written history is short.

There are a lot of theories that a comet caused the first Long Night. No Long Night, no Azor Ahaii.

Whatever the case, I think it took the Others a while to figure out what happened. This time we know the whole world sees it. That means the Others saw it too. This time they're prepared in advance for the Long Night.

The same red comet is seen in the night sky by several characters and all of them see it through the filter of their own lives and fears.  They believe that it is a harbinger of ill will, war, death, etc:  Gendry sees a red sword glowing from the heat of the forge, Dany sees Drogo's life essence and follows it through the desert like a beacon, Melisandre sees dragons breath, small folk in King's Landing call it King Joffreys Sword, a begging brother calls it "the Father's Scourge", the Greatjon sees it as revenge for Ned Stark, Edmure Tully thinks it represents victory for his house, Theon Greyjoy thinks of it as "his" comet (selfish jerk), Aeron Damphair thinks it is a call to war from the Drowned God.  This was always the way of it in our own history as well.  The appearance of a comet was accompanied by fear and doomsday predictions.  But the World of Ice and Fire has magical seasons, and dragons and blood magic so perhaps the Red Comet really is influencing things.  Could it be that the presence of the Red Comet brought a change to the magic on Planetos causing it to be more intense?  Did the strengthening of magic make it possible for Dany to hatch her dragons when it might not have been possible before?
