Jaak
Jaehaerys I had the rashness to challenge Wasp to a trial by combat in person, rather than employ king´s champion. Jaehaerys was 49. He had the luck to win. Had Jaehaerys lost, what would Aemon have done to a Kingslayer in a fair trial challenged by King himself? To his slutty sister? In the centuries of Seven Kingdoms, has any King set a precedent of being rash in challenging a criminal to a personal trial - and losing?
naseridrl
Not sure. But isn't the winner in theory picked by the Seven? Might cast doubt on the legitimacy of this branch of House Targaryen or House Targaryen in general to rule the Seven Kingdoms that the gods didn't back their King. Lord Varys
The Beesbury fellow couldn't have won. This was Jaehaerys I fighting him, not some brigand or robber knight. But if Jaehaerys had stumbled over his beard and pierced himself with Blackfyre or something of that sort, then the whole thing would have likely been the outcome of a proper trial-by-combat. His successor, King Aemon I, would have been obliged to accept the outcome, assuming he was following honor and tradition and all that. If not, then the guy would have become dragon fodder, along with the rest of those Beesburys.
