Snarks are "distinguishing those that have feathers, and bite" and "from those that have whiskers, and scratch."

But some snarks are boojums.

That might explain what happened to Benjen.  He went hunting for snarks north of the Wall, and found a boojum.

Boojum is also a term from superfluidity, involving the patterns formed on Helium-3 at temperatures approaching absolute zero... i.e. really cold. So clearly Boojums in ASoIaF refer to the Others.

Interestingly, the Boojum tree is also known as the Cirio tree... so GRRM is telling us that Syrio Forel was an Other.
