Rant & Rave Season 8 [Spoilers]: When you are cool like a cucumber, as evil as the mother of madness, but never as perfect as the pet!

Stannis is long dead in the show but it seems the writers couldn't resist giving him one last kick when he's down. The newest lore video on the Greyoy rebellion yanks his glory away by having Euron claim he easily saw through Stannis strategy and that his trap was ''unsubtle'', but that he chose to give Stannis the victory anyway since his heart wasn't in his brothers war.

Now the lore videos always have an unreliable narrator telling them but given how the show used Euron as an instant win button for Cersei multiple times and how they claim they don't like Stannis I'd say its probably meant to be true.

This compilation is very helpful, thank you.  With the holidays, taking care of my mother with a hip replacement, and my absolute refusal to buy this DVD stuff LOL, this Inside the Epi that you've put together is much appreciated.  Thank you.

Holy smokes, I had missed this video and I’m in shock at the utter hackery. I know, I shouldn’t be in shock, but I am. I’m actually in shock that I’m in shock. If that makes sense?

And the way they keep saying how “they came up” w/ this or that during series 3... I can’t help but think, remember how very early on they kept saying that what they wanted most of all was to get to do the RW? So, there you go. They got to s3, got to do their precious RW, and came up w/ all these stupid as fuck ideas b/c it was back then that they decided they didn’t give two fucks about any of it anymore. :bang:

What do you mean? I’m a bit confused.

I think @SeanF means that looking at the level of insane incompetence and stupidity big picture, that’s a minor issue.

Not quite.  If you really were at risk of being turned into a zombie, would you really be that concerned about whether (in the event of victory) you would exercise power of Lady of Winterfell or Queen of the North?  To Sansa, it seems to be the only issue that matters, which I think is unrealistic in such a situation.

On the Golden Globes:

It’s clear by now that showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss had no clue what they were doing, and once George R.R. Martin’s prose came to an end, instead of reaching out for help, or handing off the show to someone new so that it could be wrapped up in a reasonable number of episodes (several more seasons), they squandered everything they worked so hard to create and gave us pure, unadulterated garbage television... It ended as one of the greatest disappointments in television history. As far as I’m concerned, being snubbed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the HFPA runs the Golden Globes) is just exactly what should happen when a show tries to wrap up too fast just so its creators can move on to other projects.

On the "we didn't want it to end" lie:

Fans weren’t unhappy simply because the show came to an end, they were unhappy because it deserved a better ending, and it needed more time to get there in a way that felt natural instead of rushed or forced. They were unhappy because so many of the plot points the show built toward over the years, so many of the breadcrumb trails we followed, led to nothing, or to bizarre head-fakes. They—we—are angry still because we don’t understand why the showrunners gave up on something so special. It’s one of the most baffling decisions in modern television and I don’t think I’ll ever truly understand.

The comments are a joy to behold.

Even the praise is for the acting and music and some of the camera work.  No one praises the storyline.

Yep!  And it's been said before but I'll say it again: When they say they decided to do something, or came up with an idea, seasons before - it's a bold-faced lie.  It's so obviously total ret-conning.  They very much made it up on the fly after the RW.  That's why it very literally became a series of practically unrelated vignettes where no character or storyline was logical or consistent:rolleyes:

This was at the point that they were claiming that Daenerys is " a heroine.  The good Targaryen. " and then after Season 7, they drooped hints about she and Jon having a child, and Cersei having a miscarriage.

I don't think one can believe a word they say/

So if the White Walkers are the Harvesters from Independence Day, Jon Snow is Jeff Goldblum, Arya is Captain Hiller (Will Smith), so is Sansa Secretary of Defense Nimzicki?

I think Jaime’s ending was planned as far back as Season 5, since the line about the valonqar strangling Cersei was left out.

Nah, they were all over the place with Jaime as well.  They kept having him do inexplicable stuff all the time so that they could simply do what they always wanted to do with the show: shock or surprise the audience.  They had Jaime teleport to the North to fight along side the Starks and get with his lady love Brienne.  Only, nope, they then made that just a tease.  It turned out Jaime was not really a changed man.  Instead, they then teleported him back to Kings Landing to inexplicably die with his true love Cercei.  None of it made any sense whatsoever beyond simply wanting to tease, fake out, surprise, and shock the audience.

Good.

I agree, I'm just shocked it took so long for people to realize that it was not, in fact, snowing but that they were being peed on instead.

Maybe them buying the DVD, seeing the episodes back-to-back (or just away from the hype) and exploring the other behind-the-scenes content finally woke them up. To which, I say, fantastic. The DVD boxset had its uses after all.

Yeah, Benioff and Weiss were all over the place with everything. They threw it all into a bag of tricks, then in the end, threw the bag away and made up some more. Their justifications are just them making up "the dog ate my homework" excuses to the tune of millions of dollars.

I quoted it before, but they spelled it out here: "Because what if you’re wrong? What if there’s a better idea out there and you planted a flag on the second- or third-best idea? So it was always more a “What if…” conversation than an “I think that…” It was a retcon of retcons.

The basis of who Jaime is, the pivotal event of his existence, is that he cared about the people of Kings Landing. To just wipe that out and have him say I care nothing about them or anyone else but the sister I wanna screw is all you need to know about their crappy ending.

GRRM said this on his blog about another pivotal Jaime scene:

"As for your question... I think the "butterfly effect" that I have spoken of so often was at work here... The setting is the same, but neither character is in the same place as in the books, which may be why Dan & David played the sept out differently. But that's just my surmise; we never discussed this scene, to the best of my recollection."

To never discuss that scene is telling about how poorly they adapted these books. This is one of the big ones in the whole saga, it's the turning point for two main characters. After this, Cersei begs Jaime to save her life, and he burns her letter.

GRRM plays very heavily into Jaime's changes, showing he's no longer a mirror for narcissistic Cersei to gaze into. She can't get past that he lost his hand, and GRRM plays this up about a dozen times or more (I counted once).

When Jaime cuts his hair, he thinks he doesn't look like Cersei anymore. Later he grows a beard, and thinks the same. The breeze in Jaime's hair went from Cersei's fingers to a woman's fingers. You don't go from all of this back to square one, like the show did.

This is just like when GRRM said he had no idea what they were doing with Sansa at a pivotal moment of her story, and wished they had done it his way. Just like when he said he wished they had not cut Lady Stoneheart, and other departures.

GRRM often talks about how the butterflies turned into dragons.

Bar Sansa's rape (a big bar admittedly) I didn't think the Winterfell storyline was too bad - but it required viewers to accept a huge implausibility, that Sansa would marry into the family that betrayed and murdered her mother and brother.

It was actually worse than too bad. I could go into all the nonsense, but we all talked about it a lot then if you wanted to read earlier rants threads.

You can't even go forward from "it never would have happened" for starters. Bowed, Bent, and Broken was the worst rated episode prior to season 8.

I don't want to get into it again, but there were about 1,000 bizarre things about the Winterhell storyline that defied belief and destroyed the characters/story.

Seriously, read the earlier rants threads, the list of problems is so long, it would take a day to list them all. One after another, things that would never happen, all piled up.

Maybe I thought the Porne storyline was so bad that Winterhell seemed good by comparison.
