Rant & Rave Season 8 [Spoilers]: When you are cool like a cucumber, as evil as the mother of madness, but never as perfect as the pet!

No.  The full report explains this more.

Well I'm not going to keep arguing this point because it's not even the main one:  in the original version, there's a wildfire chain reaction that does most of the damage, not Daenerys.  There's even concept art of it, AND the VFX team commentary states in as many words "we changed this from wildfire to dragonfire".

I completely agree with your statement here. Also i dont see why cant we discuss a ranting video on the season here? After all who cares if its in the episode thread or in the rant and rave thread? Or maybe Dragon you should create a separate topic for your investigations?

Let's just say Season 8 was a shitshow (Season 7 too), and peddled some horrible political messages.

Tyrion's "First they came for the slave traders, and I did nothing for I was not a slave trader.

Then they came for the child murderers, and I did nothing for I was not a child murderer.

Then they came for the rapists, and I did nothing for I was not a rapist"

sophistry, along with giving the trappings of National Socialism to people of colour, tells you all you need to know about where D & D were coming from, politically, and why absolutely no one wanted to touch "Confederate" with a long pole.

I imagine with Confederate, we'd have had black sex slaves giving it away free to sympathetic characters; black slaves explaining how they're actually better off not being free; the Underground Railroad portrayed as terrorists (perhaps led by a charismatic young woman);  and while there would have been nasty slave owners for us to boo at, there'd have been many more good slave owners, portrayed as the voice of wisdom.

s5 was mostly a shitshow
s6 was okish mainly because of few episodes
s7 was mostly a shitshow
s8 was complete disaster, worse than all the 3 before

Loaded with horrible messages of all kinds. Whenever they talk, it's to say stupid or nasty things, and whenever they don't talk, it's just emoting on cue to something stupid or nasty.

There was no point to the show. When we think of good shows, it's enjoyable to tell someone what it's all about. This one, everyone ends up where they began, and it doesn't mean a damn thing.

S 5 gave us Porne, Stannis's vilification, and Sansa's rape.  But, we did get Hardhome, wonderful acting from the High Sparrow, and a reasonable Eastern plot line (bar sex slaves giving it away free to Tyrion).

S 6 ended strongly, even if much of the Season was weak.

S7 had three scenes of worth (the confrontation between Ellaria and Cersei, the Field of Fire, and Olenna v Jaime(.

S 8 had some good music, and some impressive cinematography.

But, yeh, Season 5 was definitely when plotting and characterisation ceased making sense.

And good visual effects most of the way (except for Jaime somehow regrowing a hand in “The Bells”).

A year on from the finale, I attempted an experiment. What if you stripped away all of this, and considered the Game of Thrones finale with fresh eyes? With 12 months of hindsight, is the episode really as terrible as it seemed back in 2019?

Yes.

https://www.vulture.com/2020/05/was-the-game-of-thrones-finale-really-that-bad.html

Short and sweet, and to the point.

With some notable exceptions, a consensus emerged that Thrones had turned in one of the worst finales of all time.

But context is everything. Before the finale aired, viewers were already primed for outrage. The episode came on the heels of two abbreviated seasons that marked a sharp drop-off in quality, full of hollow characterizations, slapdash pacing, and plotting that all but abandoned traditional notions of cause and effect.

Just a note that it isn't just the script ... The VFX team and concept art confirm it was originally wildfire doing most of the burning. It's pretty clear Evil Dany was a screaming retcon. That's why nothing leads up to it and even ep. 6 suggests a different situation, with Dany not acting like murthering psycho. And as for foreshadowing ... I never bought it. So to rant: it stank.

So what led to the change? Was it “subverting expectations”?

This corroborates with the other video clips I've posted, of their own statements, demonstrating that they basically focused all their attention on her death scene while leaving the rest of the season to rot.

Then their failure is even worse, even more mind-boggling, since the scene in question is utter rubbish. Maybe the worst in s08.

Well, it would appear that they thought it was sweet and romantic.

Yes. And that speaks volumes irt their grasp on storytelling in general, and this specific story in particular.

My guess would be that they suddenly realised that people dying by wildfire explosion doesn't actually provide much of a justification for Jon killing Daenerys.  Jon killing Daenerys simply in order to save Sansa would have left Jon as a very unsympathetic and stupid character.  But, it didn't work anyway.

Jon killing Daenerys solely in order to save Sansa and Arya would have been horrific and awful, but would have made more narrative sense.  It would have been a very bleak ending to the tale, just as nihilistic as the ending we were given, but it would have been less stupid.
