The bible paints a fiery hell. God destroyed cities with fire and brimstone. That's according to the bible. Hell in ASOIAF is ice. Cold is the absence of heat. Dark is the absence of light. Heat and light is what gives life to the universe. The absence of both is cold and dark. Death. The bringer of death in the story is ice. in Dante's Divine Comedy, the 9th and final circle of hell is a frozen one. The sinners are all trapped in a large frozen lake, divided into four rings based the final and most serious of the sins according to Dante, treachery. The first of the inner circles is betrayal of the family, then betrayal of community, than betrayal of guests, and finally betrayal of lords. It's reserved for traitors, betrayers and oathbreakers. Quote Promise me, Ned, his sister had whispered from her bed of blood. She had loved the scent of winter roses. "Gods save me," Ned wept. "I am going mad." Aline de Gavrillac
The North is a wasteland of ice. I can only imagine the hardships the Starks or anyone for that matter, who chooses to remain in the north. Migration to the south and the east is the answer though many will choose to remain. After all, the Starks must remain in Winterfell.
zandru
Like I said earlier, your Christian interpretation of the "one and only" hell is irrelevant to Westerosi beliefs, where they have seven and all are different. Overthinking.
The Mother of The Others
On 1/17/2019 at 11:24 AM, Seams said: Is it possible that Craster is a gatekeeper and the Fist of the First Men is the gate to hell? Well oddly yes, this rings true, just not the stuff leading up to this conclusion. Edd noticed their job seemed to be to throw themselves at death. Why speed their deaths up by giving their weapons away? was the gist of his line about getting to hell quicker. That's not a nod to the supernatural plotline specifics or a special message from Ned. 'Tis a regular conversation about how much do you want to trust the untrustworthy. Pretending sameness between our level of awareness and the characters' doesn't gain us anything besides confusion. I'd love to own a chinchilla, for instance, but Jon and Edd don't know that.

But why the "reserved for the Starks of Winterfell" part ya think? They reign during winter. Literally the kings of winter. Hell for everybody else but paradise for the Starks. This frozen place will be the domain of the Starks and their direwolves. They will rule over the dead. But it's also a prison they cannot leave from. Wow. I need to reread that classic.
The Mother of The Others
If oathbreakers were remade into the first Others, what ancient oath of great importance was broken? It would have to predate the Others, meanwhile all the story's emphasis is on the current Watch oath to keep Others out. Uhhhh, we've got the breakers of the First Men's pact with the Children? Do the Others = the Green Men group from the isle of faces??? They staked themselves to the pact, then mankind slipped and resumed hostilities (with the andals appearance) , and the green men began to slide into an icy hell, morphologically. Eh? Vandal
All happy kingdoms are alike; each unhappy kingdom is unhappy in their own hell. Seven kingdoms might be the seven hells To quote the quote above: Quote He [Strickland] would wait until all seven hells were frozen if he could rather than risk another bout of blisters. [ADWD - THE GRIFFIN REBORN] They might, soon.
