Watched, Watching & Rewatch Redux

I started rewatching Fringe a couple of years ago and then it got pulled from either Amazon or Netflix before I got to finish season 4.  I saw that it was back on Amazon through IMDB Freedrive (which is apparently some free streaming service that has advertisements on it - Amazon also owns IMDB), so I've watched the first 9 episodes of season 4 this week with nary an ad.

Started a re-watch of The Wire tonight.  Love that end credit music so much.

I started that quite a while back, made it through season 1 before getting sidetracked.  Need to get back to it.

Watched the first episode of Sex Education.

It really frazzled my brain. Not because the story is complex or anything. But it doesn't seem to reside in any sort of recognisable space and time.

It's supposed to be located in the UK.. all the actors are British. Yet the locations look distinctly unBritish, large sweeping vistas and a school straight out of 'Saved by the Bell'. Plus you have Jocks wearing american football jackets, large US style school logos and hallways with lockers in it. None of which really is indicative of Britain in any way.. which is much greyer and less grand on every level.

And then I guess it's meant to be set in say 2018? There is mention of Pornhub, yet everyone dresses in a sort of stylised 80's way, nobody is addicted to mobile phones, people use porno magazines, ride around on old bikes.

It just felt really bizarre. Couldn't get over it.

Still watching Westworld and I’m no longer impressed.

Season 2 feels slow and bland with the sense of lack of mystery. What else is there they can reveal? To be entirely honest all of the season one “plottwists” felt underwhelming already. Still there’s a significant drop in the show’s ability to keep me  interested, to the point that I fell asleep in the middle of an episode last night.

I was far less impressed with season 2. Mainly because it was still desperately trying to be clever but in a way that i couldn't even be bothered to play along. There's some great moments still and I'm still onboard but it went from being a highlight show to an ok one.

All of this. There is some interesting growth for the character and the premise and mystery of it grows as the show goes on. I thought it was fantastic and while I couldn't relate to the character at all, I know they exist and I liked following the journey. My wife and I loved it.

I liked the second episode much more. They were having more fun with the premise and showed it has sone flexibility too. The key thing was that the second episode showed the Central character is actually pretty sad (not just from the crazy events) rather than walking around like the daughter of the king from "disenchanted".

I dropped out 6 episodes into season 2 and wow was it a struggle to get that far. The show did it’s utmost to irritate me with its storytelling and it’s willingness to keep the viewer in the dark the whole time. I also didn’t rewatch the first season so it was incredibly hard to understand what was going on for the first couple of episodes,  never knowing whether gaps in my knowledge were my own lack of memory or deliberate storytelling ploys

Pretty much the same thing mr robot did in season 2, although in the case of that show I'm not sure whether I'll ever get around to going back.

Lol yes, I had the exact same experience. It simply is poor writing to keep the audience confused as to what is going on for such a long period of time. Some work has to be done to establish ground rules and let us get our bearings. Mr Robot seemed to delight on throwing it's audience constant curveballs, but that wasn't a pleasant experience.

S2 was definitely frustrating, but you missed a great episode in Kiksuya (2x08).

Finished Justified S5 during flights this week and last.  Still very good, although jailhouse Ava and hostile Art made the season a bit of a downer.  And ep2 of S6 starts with a pretty bleak tone to boot.

With more flights this week and next, I’ll probably finish S6.  Then I’ll need something new to watch on airplanes.

S5 is the weakest for sure and yeah the Ava in jail storyline was my least favorite of the entire show but s6 is full of quality episodes and the ending is one of the better tv endings imo

Agreed. Thought the ending for S6 was pretty solid.

Well that’s the thing. It’s trying so hard it’s not. I can smell the sweat of the effort they are making to be clever, and all the whole they are make the dumbest, most obvious and blatant mistakes in being coherent and/or consistent.

Yeah, I agree about being kept in the dark.  I like a little mystery and having to wonder how reliable the storytelling is, but this... Look, here’s a red ball, no it’s actually blue, and hang on, it’s not even a ball, it’s a gmo melon, are you shocked, and you know what, this is not even what you are supposed to be looking at, the whole point was the bee that flew over this red-blue ball-melon. I just can’t be bothered to care after a while.

Westworld definitely suffered from a sophomore slump, despite there being some fantastic episodes and segments, but yes, they tried too hard to make things confusing for no other reason than whatever, and it was tedious to see Bernard constantly confused.  I also thought it was a misstep to show the bodies floating at the beginning, robbing the show of any actual tension, and turning it into another puzzle box but one not nearly so interesting as the first season.  I still think it's a fantastic show and will definitely watch until the end, but I hope they self correct for the next season.

I think there is an element of the fanbase of Westworld that revel in the lack of opacity in the show, and use their obsession to try and work out what is going on, almost like a hobby. Good luck to them I say, but the show was never interesting enough to warrant that level of attention IMO.

I don’t think it’s possible to figure out what’s going on in westworld. The element of convenient coincidences is way too present in the plot for it to be a solvable puzzle. They take 180 degree turns three times per episode and you have no chance of anticipating what might be the consequence of one thing or the other, as they don’t establish rules and most definitely don’t stick to them.

I’m currently watching episode 2 of season 2 and they introduced an agenda that’s the exact opposite of what everybody has been pushing in season 1.

Spoiler

Also, am I expected to root for Dolores? She is a narrow minded psychopathic dictator with no moral compass or sense of rationality.

Onto episode 3, this woman is batshit crazy and how the F does she not die from shot wounds? The size of the collateral damage....

Do what I did, just stop bothering trying to figure out which timeline they are in, it all comes out at the end and is, I thought, generally irrelevant to the actual plot.  There are some really excellent elements to season 2, so I would say, stick with it, even though it's not as good as season 1.

With Westworld season 2 it felt like the writers were more interested in out-smarting people on Reddit than actually writing a compelling story. They're so afraid that people will figure out all the mysteries and twists beforehand that they make everything super vague, which means no character has a clear motivation for what they are doing, which makes it hard to care about any of it.

I'm through the first three episodes of Pure(or The Evil that Mennonites Do). This is getting dark, but great so far.

Not sure about I Am The Night yet. It has potential but I haven't been wowed yet.

I've given up on Project Blue Book.
