Another small question: Why does the Damphair frequently think of the screech of a rusted hinge?

The common speculation prior to some TWoW-related chapter release is that it's a signal that he was  sexually abused by Euron when he was the child, the rusted hinge being the sound of his door being opened in the night. Regarding TWoW:

Spoiler

Said chapter, the Aeron chapter titled "The Forsaken", confirmed that Euron used to sexually assault Aeron and his brother Urrigon on some occasions, going into their shared bedroom in the night.

I'll have to reread that chapter, but where does it mention that? I've never noted that.

Spoiler

“It was me who taught you how to pray, little brother. Have you forgotten? I would visit your bed chamber at night when I had too much to drink. You shared a room with Urrigon high up in the seatower. I could hear you praying from outside the door. I always wondered: Were you praying that I would choose you or that I would pass you by?” Euron pressed the knife to Aeron’s throat.

Cersei became Cersei Baratheon when she married Robert, but she is never once called that. She is always Cersei Lannister. I think it's just a choice on our author's part.

Agreed, sort of. I think its generally a choice on the character's part (which is the Author's choice of course), to emphasize their status and to nail their colours to a particular mast, so to speak. I don't think its a random choice on GRRMs part.
Targaryen>Velaryon
Lannister>Baratheon (in Cersei's eyes).

Noblewomen can go by their married name or their original house name. https://www.westeros.org/Citadel/SSM/Entry/SF_Targaryens_Valyria_Sansa_Martells_and_More

Quote

You ask about names. Several different questions here. Maege Mormont is called Mormont because no one knows her husband's name, or even if she has one. There is all the talk that she beds with a bear. She prefers to keep her own counsel. Most of the ladies of Westeros do change their names when they wed, although usage varies. If the wife's family is significantly higher born than the husband's, she may use his name little, if at all. The Dornish have their own customs. The full surname of the ruling house of Dorne is Nymeros Martell, and the ruling pricesses keep that in its female form. They do not take the name of their consorts.

GRRM refers to queens consort by their original family name (Betha Blackwood, Alannys Harlaw, Alys Harroway, Alicent Hightower, Cersei Lannister, Margaery Tyrell, Jeyne Westerling etc.), so many readers have concluded that consorts do not take on the family name of the monarch. Jon Snow thinks of "Selyse Baratheon" twice in ADWD, but Selyse wed Stannis before he announced his claim and he has not yet acquired the Iron Throne.

Why didn’t Will go back to the wall instead of deserting after the prologue?

Because George needed us to see him executed by the Ned.

Will's watch ended that night and they do not accept wights in the NW.

i know @The_Watcher_On_The_Walls ... why didn't he ?
i'm sure someone would have believed him/the story he would have told.  this is what i think.
it would have been great intel for the Watch to know of what happened.

i don't have any links to some of the more thoughtful discussions that have been had on this topic but take a search for keywords in the main forum if you like; in all my readings of postings on this forum there isn't a definitive reason that i've read.
general consensus is that he went "craven"

got a good idea though?  drop your book-related theory into the main forum for discussion   people are hungry for new ideas

You mean Gared; Will got strangled by wight!Waymar while Gared lost his head to Ned. In the books anyway.

True, it’s Gared not Will. In any case the question remains.... He’d been longer on the wall than Mormont, by all accounts he was a seasoned veteran of the watch

I could entertain him being driven mad by the events and going AWOL, but it’s never clarified. Besides, when the Others showed up later no one lost their shit like he supposedly did.

Lol for a minute I was wondering what you were on about, like why would the watch not accept the existence of the others?

I’m the goose, I meant Gared.

When I read your question I got this image of Will's wight walking all the way to The Wall and being rejected at the gates ;-)

About Gared I see two options:

-He was really scared like Stiv and Wallen (Osha's companions)

-He was one of Coldhand's rescuees and was tasked with escorting the she-wolf through the Blackgate all the way to Winterfell.

I think the answer might be tied to another question: how did he manage to cross the Wall? I don't think hastily climbed over it without the proper gear, or that his brothers let him cross but then he flew them, and his position both before and after crossing the Wall suggest he didn't go throw the shore. I think there might have been some mind controlling so he can send the Direwolves through the Black Gate.

I suspect Bridge of Skulls. After all Westwatch is empty and Shadow Tower is far enough that a man who knows normal patrol routes of NW would have very good chances to bypass the Wall by using that route. In fact I think it is odd that NW had left that route almost open. Or they had not either destroyed that bridge or rebuild Westwatch by the bridge.
